Parents, can smart kids succeed without a college degree?

No, really I thank you for all your suggestions and I cannot respond to each and every reply here. Starbright you sound well intentioned and are actively trying to help me and I appreciate it.

I think what I am going to do is just make do with myself and my situation- like cbug said, just be at peace with myself. I’ve made the decision I don’t really want to go back to college, even though I respect the institution of college itself as a net benefactor to society.

Sithra, it seems to me you should take the remaining funds you were going to use on college and start your own business. You aren’t going to like working for someone else any more than you like conforming to the college system.

Be your own boss, write your own rules (other than dealing with Uncle Sam’s taxes and regulations). You’ll need to do a lot of research about what kind of business to start, and you may need to work for someone else for a while in the field to learn the ropes.

Maybe part of your problem with college is that it is too abstracted from the real world. Well, starting a business will be a sledge-hammer of real world, immediate, full-time motivation.

On your original question about success without a college degree, well, running your own business is the way to potentially make more money than getting a degree just to work for someone else.
