<p>Yes, first-generation college students are helped slightly. I think most people exaggerate its importance, but it is a factor… probably a bigger deal in more prestigious schools where less first-gens go.</p>
<p>I read it’s a tip factor but not a hook,whatever that means.</p>
<p>A tip factor is something that will tip the scale in your favor if you’re right on the edge of getting accepted/rejected. A hook is something that will make you seem especially attractive, usually in terms of diversity on campus.</p>
