College applications ask you for the educational background of your parents and siblings.
Is it better to have uneducated parents or educated parents?
How about siblings?
What if your parents/siblings all did masters and stuff, but from a different country (Pakistan).
Also, does being an immigrant (came 02/2002) and a permanent resident help/hurt my chances of getting in?
I talking about HYPSC and UVA

You should fillout your applications truthfully because deceptions could be cause for rescinding your admission. In the end lying is not worth it. Your parents are what they are they are either educated or uneducated. Makes no sense to attempt to game the system as it would only come back to bite you.

Even if your parents were educated outside of the U.S. you still need to put down the highest educational level achieved.

The application does ask you about siblings, if you have sibling in college, the school does take this into consideration when putting together a financial aid packge.

If you are a not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you woud be considered an international applicant regardless of the number of years that you have attended school here. Some schools are not need blind for international students, others offer very limited if any aid to international students. You must check the policy of each school to see where you fall.

I am not saying that I am going to lie, I am just wondering why they ask for your parent's education.

I mean does it make a difference that they are college graduates or not?

I am a permanent resident, so I would not be an international student.

Colleges could ask for your parents' educational background to see if you are a legacy at that college or if you are the first in your family to go to college. Neither of these will get you in or keep you out, but they may sway admissions officers if you are tied with another student who isn't a legacy or the like.
