Parents haven't recieved all tax information yet...what should I do?

My parents haven't recieved all their tax information yet and so they can't file their taxes until they recieve everything. The fafsa deadline for the schools I got into is this month. I'm freaking out because I don't know what to do. I'm not going to know or even get money for school if I don't file it on time. I called the admissions lady at one of the schools i got into and she said to just estimate what my parents made. Well I told my dad that and he doesn't want to do it.

Is anyone in the same position as me?

Can someone help? (lol)

Many people are in the same position. If your parents income has not changed alot this year, you can figure it using 2007 info, and update it later. I am a Mom in the same spot.

We are in the same situation. I am still waiting on a 1099. I called the office yesterday and they said the fund got an extension in sending out their income tax data to recipients so we won't receive it for another 2 weeks, if that. I want it in hand before I call the accountant and set up an appointment to bring all our documents in. My D's deadline is March 1. There are too many forms for me to estimate, so I'm going to just put in the 2007 figures until I get the actual figures from the accountant. It's the only thing I can do now, it's out of my control.

I am in the EXACT same situation as JerseyShoreMom-found out today one fund got an extension to send out 1099's up until 2/15. S is already a freshman bit we want to get the FAFSA done now. We are going to estimate.

It is quite OK to estimate your FAFSA. Somewhere I read that "people's income doesn't vary much from year to year." Sounds very last year! But some schools clearly even advise estimating the FAFSA--see University of Hartford website (not that many CCers look at a place like that). WUSTL has a 15 January priority deadline--of course everyone has to estimate. It is VERY important for the FAFSA computer record to show that you met the deadline for submission, and it will show on the computer if you submit on time. You will end up with several numbered versions of the FAFSA (numbers on left of list, they are the hotlinks to the versions) after you make corrections, but it is more important to MEET THOSE DEADLINES. Better to get $3000 less aid because you had to adjust numbers higher, than NO aid because you didn't meet the deadline of a school that is rigid about deadlines.

I am in the exact same position. My dad is deciding whether or not to file income tax and mine is due FEB 15... He doesn't really have any taxable income. Does that mean that I am automatically have an EFC of 0 or what?

I'm in the same position! I'm tearing my hair out because my mom keeps refusing to estimate and I've already missed the deadline for 2 freakin schools!!!!!!!!

To circum: I think you should read the replies I got in my urgent post, they were pretty helpful to me. As far as FAFSA goes send it in as soon as possible was the response I got. And I didn't know what to fill in either, I just left a lot of blanks and zeroes. However, I tried, and that is by no means to say I was accurate, to supply the biggies like adjusted gross income, how much each parent makes, and that's all I can recall at the moment. I was told that $13,000 was a good income tax estimate for an AIG of $105,000 so I guess you could use my stats in a proportion if you can estimate your family's AIG(which is basically how much your parents make in a year). Like 13000/105000=x/your AIG. I hope this helps. Also, I know now that my dad can get his 1040 return form from what I've been hearing, but is it just as easy to get his 2007 as well? That's actually one of the reasons why it was so hard for me to estimate on FAFSA, b/c I didn't even have last year's income tax returns to guide me. I wound up putting, all together now, a grand total of 6 numbers in the FAFSA. Anyways the CSS wants the 2007 form for filling out certain sections, for reasons I don't really understand.

FAFSA says you cannot correct :Your financial information, unless it was incorrect as of the day the FAFSA was submitted. So does this mean I can correct my parents financial info or not???? Also if someone could please answer my Q about 2007 that would be great???? AND i want to make sure I understand, my mother can drive to her CPA in person and ask him to print out a return form right there???? It's a return form that she needs right, that goes line by line? If someone could just give me what EXACTLY it's called that'd be great. My parents filed 1040 if that helps. People are calling it returns and transcripts and so I'm confused on what form gives you a line by line breakdown of finances that you use to fill out the CSS and fafsa.
Also are you supposed to receive an e-mail right after you submit FAFSA for confirmation or something. I submitted it and my status says its processing but should i have gotten an email?

Bumbety bump, my mother is about to come home soon from work and I really want to tell her what forms she needs to get from her CPA, if she's able to drive over there while I'm in school for the day.
Do income tax returns (what I THINK is the line by line breakdown that makes it easy to fill out CSS and such) record untaxed income, current bank statements mortage info, and records of stocks bonds and other investments?

She just got here and I have about 10 min till school starts I'm just going to ask my mom to get her 2008 and 2007 income tax RETURNS is that the same as a 1040? Is there anything else I should ask her to get and these are the ones that show finances line by line correct????????

hmf123, yes, your mom's 1040 is her federal income tax return. Please don't fret about this. It is extremely common to have to use your best guestimate the first time through on the FAFSA. As mentioned by others in this thread, you must meet your school's deadline. Once your mom has her taxes finished she can go back online and make the corrections (make sure you make note of your password, your pin number and her pin number so she can get back in). Your school will then get notification of the corrected EFC.

I believe that when you start the FAFSA it gives you the option of clicking into a page that lists all the documents you'll need to answer the questions.

As far as correcting the CSS...once you file that one you won't be able to go back into it online. You will be able to correct it, though, by printing it and then crossing through your original answer and writing in the correct answer. You can then mail the corrected CSS to your school's financial aid department. (This was my experience last year anyway. I don't need to file a CSS this year - hooray! - so I'm not absolutely certain.)

"I've already missed the deadline for 2 freakin schools!!!!!!!!"

Many deadlines are soft; don't assume that it's too late. Contact each school.

hmf. let us know what happened. (And don't forget that lots of the people here are adults who have other things to do too, and may not Always--HAH!--be looking at CC online right whe you need us ;-). And DO send something off to FAFSA. I am not sure where you got info that you cannot correct the FAFSA--it only "locks" for several days right after you submit it. I have had to correct one hundred thousand dollar mistakes (by others) a few times--boy, is that a shocker! But it works just fine to correct it--just DON'T lose that PIN and password!

Everything has worked out just fine. Looking back on the last 2 days I can't believe I was so stressed out. To everyone who has missed deadlines I sent an e-mail to the school whose deadline I missed (Ithaca College due FEB 1, I sent it in 2 days late by the way) and I finally got a reply:
We will still accept your FAFSA at this time, but it's important to file as soon as possible to be considered for all eligible financial aid.

Our office accepts the CSS profile, but we do not require this application for your Financial Aid Award Package.

If you still have questions please call our office.

Respectfully,

Jolan Becken

So it's OKAY if you're a few days late everyone, just get it in as soon as possible. I hope this helps some people.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I called the schools again and they said to make an estimate. Then they also let me know I can change the information on my FAFSA when my parents file their taxes. I was so stressed. We're doing my FAFSA this weekend and I can't wait to find out how much dough I'm getting lol.
