parents-help with college selection

Hi,

I am a sophmore at a LAC and I am looking to transfer to another college. I've come to realize that my current school does not meet my needs. I am looking for a school with a quirky student body with a good art history dept. The problem is that my gpa is about a 3.3 and my high school gpa is a 3.7. I am just worried that I won't get into any school with my low gpa.

Look into Hampshire College--their student body is "quirky"--I don't know how good their art history is but via the Five College exchange you would have access to Smith, Mount Holyoke and Amherst colleges--all 3 have good art history. You also my want to try Sarah Lawrence and possibly Bard--the transfer may not work out but it doesn't hurt to try. I would also ask for a meeting with an art history professor on the campus when you visit.

Other possibilities are Bennington and Goucher.

A college GPA of 3.3 is not low. A high school GPA of 3.7 isn't all that low, either.

I'm curious every time I hear of some of these major's, when you get a degree in Art history what do you do for a career?

Although I am definitley not an expert on which colleges have the best art history departments, I have to say that I took an art history class in college and the prof went to Bryn Mawr. She was kind of an angry-I-hate-all-men-type, but she REALLY knew her stuff. I'm not sure where she went for her post grad schooling though.

One up and coming school with a good art history department is Stonehill College in Easton, MA. Don't know how quirky the student body is, though.

Actually, Ray111, I would think that there are quite a few jobs that you could enter into with an Art History major--appraiser, curator, working at an auction house, gallery owner/manager/buyer. Something like that.

Vassar has always been famous for art history, and the last Pres. of the college was Francis Ferguson (one of the foremost names among art historians). I'd suggest Williams of course, but the number of transfers each year is around 5, so it really isn't worth your trouble. Skidmore is pretty darn good as well.

It can't hurt to try -- you could be one of those accepted. (But you won't know unless you apply.)
