MDMom, did I hang out with you at Towson???

So funny, DougBetsy. I am a transplant and was doing my partying in Iowa.

Without a doubt, I wish I had studied abroad. I donāt think I could have afforded it, but it was not on my radar to do anything like that.

For me, it would have been good to make an effort to get to know some of the professors better and do undergraduate research. I studied plenty and did well in class, but was quiet and happy to be in the background. I have counseled all my kids to do these things.

I wish that I had not majored in bio! If I had been more aware of various careers I would most likely have majored in business/accounting/finance.

I had a very good time socially in college. I do not regret that at all.

My first day of college I was an emotional wreck. I realized I needed help, and screwed up the courage to go to the the counseling center. They had their own separate building, so everyone (I thought) could see you going in. I hurried up the path, and pulled on the door handle, but it was locked. I never went back, and continued to self medicate for the next 17 years.

I sometimes wonder how my college experience would have been different had the door been open ā or had I the courage to try harder to get help.

I do wish that I had not fallen for theidea that girls are not good at math and had worked to do well in math. As an adult, I have figured out that I am very analytical and probably would have done well in something requiring those skills.

What a shame that door was locked, LurkerDad. I hope you are doing well now. We have come a long way as a society toward supporting emotional health and well being.

I wish I would have taken challenging classes in subjects outside of my two majors. I was very protective of my GPA, which did provide a benefit, but I have since regretted not taking more risks.

As for personal life, I wish I had dated more. I was looking for āthe one,ā and then when I was convinced I found her, I was exclusive with her for two years, hopelessly in love, until she dumped me.

When I was burned out, and had no clear sense of direction, I wish Iād taken a year off. Instead, I kept bumbling on and graduated with my class, a 2.7, and no idea what to do next.

Double yes on the teaching certificateā¦at my college you only needed 2 classes and a teaching internship. I did an internship in my major so could have so easily got the certificate. I looked into it two years ago and I would have had to go back and take a couple undergraduate classes (I have an MBA) and then 15 months roughly at a class per semester on top of my job to get a secondary teaching certificate. Yup I regret not getting a teachers certificate back in the 70s!

Travelled to Europe with my roommate over the summer instead of working as a waitress to earn money.

No doubt. Traveled and studied abroad.

Been a DJ at the campus radio station.

I changed majors freshman year. When I walked in to my new advisorās office, he said, āYou will get your teaching certificate.ā I did not question the advice and completed the certification. It has helped me out a couple of times. Thank you, Dr. Underhill.

Was there something I DIDNāT do?

So glad somebody, or something, somewhere, was looking out for me.

Yikes!

Explore outside my own area of comfort.
College is the time to try out new thingsā¦ art, theater, sports, creative writing, music. These are all available to explore while youāre a college student, but much less so in ānormal adult life.ā

Also, make friends with people from all over (the US or even the world) ā¦this makes for cheap travel in the future :)

I absolutely wish I had taken more advantage of the nearby city, gone to more parties / had more of a social life, dated more, danced with more boys, stayed up later talking to friends, and in general made more bonds with people. I wish I had pushed myself out of my comfort zone more in terms of trying new things. I would have liked to have studied abroad, though that wasnāt all that popular back in my day.

Majored in what I wanted to major in, instead of the one my parents directed. Although I have a great career now and am earning much more than I would have with my intended major.

Gone away to college before junior year, so I was able to live away in an apt with other students, but never really got that dorm experience.

Studied abroad.

Broken up with boyfriend instead of taking Green Tortoise back and forth from Berkeley to Eugene to see him.

Gotten more involved on campus freshman year instead of pining for said boyfriend.

Been less afraid of failing.

Taken an easier schedule first semester to get acclimated

Not transferred and stuck it out at school number one (see above)

majored in what I wanted instead of listening to all adult advice

gone to a smaller school with better advising or taken better advantage of limited advising available

ditto pizzagirl - taken advantage of nearby city

not jumped from first longterm boyfriend to second longterm boyfriend - stayed single longer to follow MY bliss (after I found out what it was, of course)

I wish Iād been more studious.
