Parents made me apply to Stanford and Princeton.. do I have any chance?

Princeton and Stanford are high reaches. Columbia and Dartmouth are reaches.

Wash U and Vanderbilt are a low reach to high match.
USC - high match to match
I dont know how the other schools work.

bump…

Why are these guy’s chances low on top schools? I’m not seeing it. He has a high GPA, SAT scores, and ECs.

If you are going to say it is a reach, let him know why so he can try to cover it in his application…

His applications are due this week. nothing more can be covered and no amount of chancing will improve them.

What warrants his low chances at these schools though?

IvyLeague2020: OP is OOS at UVA. There is no way it is a safety.

He has the same chance as any other applicant - low.

Stanford admits 7%, Princeton just under 8, Columbia at 8, Dartmouth a little higher. Most students applying to these schools have similar or better stats.

Can we stop the BS where everyone is categorized as a reach for the highest schools? He isn’t asking if he is guaranteed a spot at the school, he just wants to know if he should be applying and his chances relative to everyone else’s…

You are being extremely unhelpful typing out the typical “high reach” and moving on without putting it in context

Also, the average applicant at top schools have less than a 2200 and a 3.93 GPA…

wallrus - I am being very helpful. I know about his schools since my D applied to all these schools last year.

FWIW - she had much better stats than him.

How are you being helpful by just saying he has a low chance because everyone does? That obviously is not what he is looking for…

“Why are these guy’s chances low on top schools? I’m not seeing it. He has a high GPA, SAT scores, and ECs.”

Answer: Admit rates for top colleges are below 10%.

So you want people to lie and say he has a great chance?

Princeton published stats a couple of years ago.

SAT - 2300-2400 - 20.5%, 2100 -2300, 8.9% or something like that. My kid had almost perfect scores and did not get in and if we go by published stats, she had a 20% chance. I was sure she was in but now i know better.

If he has a 2350+ Princeton would still be a reach.

I went an elite HS and had near perfect academic records.
I was rejected or waitlisted from HYPSM.

2260 on SAT is not that high when you apply to HYPSM and so on. Believe me!

I think you have the best chance at Dartmouth of the Ivies. Because they are in a small, suburban town, they have a harder time attracting diversity.

MIT, a school as competitive as these ivies, said that all they look for in the ACTs is >30 on each subsection…

I’m not saying tell him great chances. Say if he is qualified or not to be applying, how he compares to other applicants, and strong/weak points of his application.

OP has nothing special!
That is the problem. No hooks, no major awards. Academic records are not “near perfect”.

He might get into some top colleges (HYPSM…) but chances are very low!

"Ok so my counselor doesn’t think there’s much hope anywhere. I actually applied early to Duke but was deferred. My SAT IIs are 750 USH and 700 Math II "

Private school counselors know a lot more than any of us here about admissions.

Duke admitted 100 more kids this year in ED and as a full pay OP had a good shot during ED. The schools under discussion are harder than Duke to get into due to their lower admit rate. If Duke did not admit OP during ED, why are any of the peer schools anything other than a reach?

Why doesnt everyone just relax! Im sorry i didnt mean to start an arguement was just looking to see what people who have more knowledge then myself thought. I am fully aware that these schools are extremely difficult to get into. I put a lot of work into the apps and sent em yesterday so i was just trying to see if my work had a chance of paying off. Thank you for the honest responses

Bump…

^
You already sent your app so just wait and see.

@20more, 2260 should be a fine SAT score for those schools. It may not help him, but it won’t hurt him. However, I agree with your comment on ECs.
