We are very proud and excited that our son has chosen Duke. We attended a Blue Devil Days session, and it was impossible not to be impressed. I am a west coast parent looking to see if there are others out there with students who have decided on Duke. We are from northern CA and have the usual concerns about having our son so far away from home. (We should be used to it by now, his older brother will be a senior at Princeton, but this one will be the last) Just wondering if you are planning on accompanying your student to Duke, how much stuff you are bringing, when you are arriving etc. etc. Also, Is your student planning on a pre-orientation program?,are you planning on attending Parents Weekend?, will your student be coming home for Thanksgiving break?

I’m a 2015 student from Northern CA, so can answer a few of your questions.

One of my parents will accompany me in moving in, and we will probably be bringing a few suitcases, shipping a couple boxes, and then, if necessary, picking items up at Bed Bath and Beyond or Target or something like that.

I’m planning to do PWAVES, so will be flying out August 15th. My parents are planning to meet me in Durham on August 23rd (?) with my boxes, and then stay through Parent Orientation. They will NOT be attending Parents’ Weekend, but I am flying home for Thanksgiving.

Hope this helps!

Hello,
Thank you for your responses. Might I ask you where you are from?, and what your intended course of study might be? Why did you choose Duke? Did you have other compelling choices. Did you attend a Blue Devils Days session? Thanks in advance.

I’m from the Bay Area, planning to major in Neuroscience and Biology, with a Markets and Management Certificate as well. I applied Early Decision to Duke, so it was obviously my first choice, because of both academic/intellectual culture as well as social life and athletics. Simply, Duke “felt right” from the first moment I stepped on campus when visiting in February 2010. I did NOT attend a BDD session, as I was already committed to Duke via ED.
