For those parents out there that have a son or daughter that will be members of the class of 2009, I would encourage you to join one or both of the listserves that provide information and a forum for parents. The official listserve for parents is at www.usnaparents.com. They are a wonderful source of information and have their pulse on what is going on at the Academy. Also, there is an additional listserve at www.usna-net.org. This is also a terrific site. Both sites provide valuable information and have a forum for parents to ask questions and learn about what is going on at the Academy. They are absolutely invaluable as you approach I-Day and to help you through the ups and downs of Plebe year and beyond. Wonderful caring people are involved with operating both lists.

nyminute, my parents have already visited both listserves and love them! My uncle (Academy grad) told them about it. Only problem is that I feel they're "jumping the gun" a little, as I haven't completely made up my mind to go to the Academy yet. CVW is right around the corner, so I should know soon.

They're actually great (USMA has one as well) for prospective parents. It'll also help your parents be more balanced about your decision either way - lots of parents feel that they are at a disadvantage in supporting their kids as they approach a service academy decision as they know so little about what their kid is getting into.

Enjoy CVW...but recognize that it might not answer all your questions. Your choices are SO different that it will take considerable self-reflection to make the choice that's best for you in the long-run.

Thanks, KateLewis! I think the fact that my uncle is an Academy grad gives my parents a little more "tunnel vision" than other parents might have. He comes over to visit quite a bit and ALWAYS asks if I have made a decision yet. This has been an extremely frustrating time for me with the decision process and I'm ready for it to end. I don't want to sound selfish because I know others here on this board are still waiting to hear something, and here I am with appointment in hand and can't make a decision one way or another. To lighten things up, my good friend asked me yesterday, "Hey, when do you hear from Princeton and Yale? What happens if you get in there? You only thought you had 2 schools to make a decision on, but what if you have more?" Ugh! I just glared at her and said, "You can't be serious!" then we both died laughing. I did apply to both of these schools RD, along with others, but Harvard and USNA are my top choices.

My english instructor chose the academy over Yale, if that helps :)

KateLewis,

I can't seem to find the links for the West Point listserve. Do you have any information on how I can find it? Thanks so much.

Momoftwins:

Here is the link that you are looking for:
http://www.west-point.org/parent/parent-forum/

And this is the one for prospective USMA cadets and parents:

It's monitored by some experienced MALO's. Once you register you get the password to the archives; I found trolling through those quite helpful.

nyminute and Kate,

Thanks. This is very helpful. I signed up for the prospective listserve and also found out that I can't subscribe to the parent-forum until my daughter is officially a cadet. Can't wait!

Not that it has much bearing on your individual situation, but a young man that went to the WP summer seminar with my daughter (he is from Wyoming I believe) called her last night to tell her he had just received his apppointment to West Point. He also told her he had been accepted at Georgetown and Harvard and was turning them both down. Good luck--there are a lot of talented and smart young men and women making some tough but rewarding decisions!

With the greatest respect to your daughter's friend, that would not be possible. Harvard is EA single choice. He has been accepted at either Harvard or Georgetown EA, but not both (unless he's gotten into early honor code trouble). It's possible he's an athlete holding onto a likely letter...but that's the only way it could work, I believe.

I don't know if he got in EA or not--I'll take your word for it--it's just what he told her.

perhaps he had his application in at Georgetown in a timely manner and they reviewed it early without him actually checking off early action. that has happened.

Looking at harvard's app you are allowed to apply to other colleges when you apply for harvard EA as long as those colleges notify their applicants after jan 1.

Agreed. So he would have not been able to participate under Georgetown's EA program, in which the notification was Dec 15. Perhaps, though, he got early notification under the RD round.

My antennae only went up because we're looking at the same galaxy of schools and picking your way through the ED/EA minefield takes some effort.
