Parents of Film Students

^Over the Moon = Gladiatorbird household’s favorite phrase.
Always happy to see it taken for a spin around the block.

Congrats, StantonMom and family!

Thanks for the Congrats! Yes, we are definitely over the moon and very proud of him. He didn’t apply to the OOS schools since we live in Florida and thus FSU would obviously be much more financially feasible, so we are very blessed that he was accepted.

Congratulations to the exciting new crop of filmmakers all headed to tremendous programs. I am so happy that your kids all have such great choices.

My son took a slightly different tack and is going to Columbia University for Film studies and Computer Science. He applied ED so he has been set since Dec. While he debated furiously with himself last year about the different options, in the end, this is what spoke to him. Their graduate film program is supurb and he feels he will make wonderful connections and get on set experience while learning valuable writing skills. He has had amazing hands-on experiences while in high school - working on his own films and others - and had some great internship experiences. He loves that being in NY will allow him to pursue both the relationships he has and go after other internships. It has been so exciting up to now and he is feeling confident and happy about his choice - although for a long time USC was his dream school and I was reconciled that he was going to be Ca bound. It will be nice to have him near by for a few more years anway!

Great to see so many talented and motivated filmmakers of the future. Congratulations to all who have kids in the Class of 2016! Maybe we can keep a running list of parents by student’s universities/programs and Class years. I get easily confused.

digmediaJr: Honors Tutorial College (HTC) of Ohio University, 2009, with a degree in Video Production from the School of Media Arts and Studies in the Scripps College of Communications (a mouthful!).

Snapshot of the HTC: A separate, degree-granting college within the University. “The mission of the Honors Tutorial College is to foster a transformative learning community that enhances intellectual rigor by replacing lectures with student-centered educational opportunities, including tutorials, research and creative activity, and fellowship applications; permits students to explore their scholarly and creative interests at their own optimum pace; and creates professional relationships between students and accomplished scholars and artists in their fields.” 61 freshmen admitted across approx 26 majors; average ACT: 31.

For a talented, driven student who is extremely passionate about a field and can take such a non-traditional approach to college, I highly recommend looking into HTC.

S has chosen RIT Film and Animation '16

Dlbarber–
That’s exciting–another animation (/film) student! I look forward to hearing about your son’s experiences. It looks like a great program.

Dilbar: congrats to you and son!
itsthattime: You and I have spoken before, its so nice to see a kid who knows that the general education he will get is so important. Columbia has such a unique curriculum with the first two years being universal. Those kids come out so well rounded and are able to use that knowledge in whatever they do. Sounds like your son made a great choice and really knows himself and what he want.
stantonmom: FSU is so awesome: a great program, with great graduates! And in state! Sounds like you won the trifecta! Congrats to you all!
Shakespeare fan: we are also DC area: Howard County. You? You can’t go wrong with either decision. When is your trip to the LA area?

maddenmd
Leaving tomorrow! Had to drag out some summer clothes. As you know, the weather here has been toying with us. We are in Fairfax County. Gee, something told me you live in MD! I’ll post about our experience and D’s decision when we get back. Getting ever closer…

Enjoy every minute. Chapman is a very impressive campus, especially the film school. Let us all know what you think. Safe travels.

Decision is made: Son committed yesterday to Chapman/Dodge and waved goodbye to USC, LMU, UCSD and the rest. He’s very happy…singing and humming and full of hugs.

The journey begins. :)

D has also decided on Dodge and has gotten so excited hanging out at Chapman these past few days. Flying home tomorrow but our $ will be flying back in this direction.

Thanks g-bird and s-fan for the update here and elsewhere! That’s exciting news! Congrats to all!

Congrats Shakespearefan and gladiator bird! Seems it’s only my DS that wants to go down to the wire. Although he did say he’d decide by Friday, so I’ll soon know.

Congrats to both of the new Dodge students!!! (and to the parents, too!)
Big sigh… A decision well made.

Woohoo… congrats to all!

Congrats to those whose kids just decided - what a tought decision with all those wonderful choices. Dodge sounds like a place which will provide an amazing film education and great internships.

maddenmd - thanks for your nice words about my son’s decision. He often gets questioned about why he chose not to go the conservatory route but he just spent a few days on Columbia’s campus, including attending a few film classes and meeting other film students and he feels very confident that he made the right choice for him. He has started getting interested in screenwriting as well and feels that he is at a great place to explore that avenue as well. Good luck to your son who also seems like a guy who knows what he wants and will succeed in a film career.

Columbia = a no-brainer!
Congratulations, itsthatime. You should be very proud. :)
