As a trained musician myself I can remember my most inspirational teacher saying that if a student said they “had” to major in music, she knew they were serious. She said if it was their passion then they would always regret not doing it later on, regardless of the outcome. I went to a large university with a music school, my parents did not want me to attend a conservatory,(actually I’m not sure I would have been admitted!) so at least I would have the option of taking classes and meeting people outside my own school. Little did they know I spent all my time with music school students anyway! In the end I got a masters degree in another field and for various reasons spent my final 20 plus years working outside of music. But I never regretted my musical education and still don’t. It provided me with lifelong experiences that have enriched my life and my second career.
Thank you everyone for your highly valuable input! I remained silent for awhile in order to read and re-read the Peabody article link, as well as to discuss the options with my son. I do have some questions, but I think it’s wise to move over to the music thread and continue the topic and close this thread. Hope for your further help in the music thread. Thanks!
I would mention Oberlin but also check out Case Western Reserve…CWRU has a joint program with the Cleveland Institute of Music http://music.case.edu/about/joint-program-with-cim/
"The Joint Music Program (JMP) allows students at both institutions to take advantage of the resources of a major research university as well as those of a leading conservatory. "
@bopper - Thanks for pointing that out. I didn’t know about that particular joint program.
This thread CLOSED and is now at the Music Major section with the new thread title called, “BM Degree, Double Degree or Double Major?” with a set of new questions. Thank you all!
