The Parents threads fall under “College Search and Selection.” I don’t remember that being the case before the conversion, but I may have just never noticed because the lead page was more intuitive about where to find things.
Nice to see everyone here is doing well.
We have had a nice summer overall.
G’son is soon one and has the largest personality that I have ever seen in a baby.
Fun but exhausting. H or I go over 1-2 times a week and get him early from daycare.
I am still not a baby person but he is becoming more interactive. Other G’son is 7 and I cannot get enough of him.
I have had a lot of personal “ah Ha” moments this summer and am glad to say have found good support. I am not sure what my future will bring and will post here when things are a little clearer. We sure have been together for a long time!
The summer came and went and Son was not able to get another teaching job. It makes me feel physically ill. He has applied to sub at multiple districts but none have called so far (we’re 3-4 weeks into the school year here). He had an offer for a wonderful job in a wonder district mid-summer…but when the principal found out that he only had two years of experience, he made them rescind the offer.
(Son would have been replacing a teacher of an AP class whose students made very high scores on the exam.) Principal didn’t want to risk a relative rookie. It was devastating.
I’m so sorry, @missypie - my go-to strategy (which my D also did for a while) is temp work, if he has any office type skills (or other abilities temp agencies are looking for). It can fill in the time with paid compensation while seeking something else, and it often can lead to additional opportunities.
My S is seeking employment right now - won’t know bar results until October and he just relocated for his fiancée’s grad school. We’re supporting him in the meantime, and he will age off our insurance in November, so hoping he finds something soon!
Best of luck to your son MP. How difficult! Hope all works out for him and for CQ’s son as well.
D is doing well. Due date is Jan 3 so it’s getting there. I’m planning with my DIL to through her a baby shower. Doing a lot of sewing to get stuff done for her. Currently working on a baby quilt but also have stuff for 3 blankets, a wall hanging and a knitted blanket. Hopefully I will get it all done. Quilt is taking a long time as each block is machine embroidered with a different animal - some of these animals take 1.5 hours to embroider out because they have so many stitches. Very time consuming.
H’s b’day was this past weekend and he bought me a new car. Nothing like getting a present on his b’day. We really wanted to get something bigger. I had a car - first time in my adult life and hated it. I now have a spanking brand new Subaru Ascent. Lovely to have a large vehicle again. I just didn’t like the car. Seemed that 9 times out of 10 I would hit my head just getting in.
Grandson started pre-K last week. So far he seems to love it. DIL is trying to get everyone on the new schedule as his 1/2 day pre-K is impacting the youngest’s nap schedule. I’m sure it will all work out in the next week or so.
I sure didn’t know when I had kids how much I could hurt for them. D1 was accepted to the JAG with a 6 percent acceptance rate. she is really and accomplished , kind, person. She has had a hearing loss since birth. She has always done fine. Anyway she was medically disqualified and she is pretty upset. They had initially said it would be ok d/t the place she would be in the job. My heart breaks for her.
D2 is getting married just the usual stress. I am happy for her. I am taking this transition rather hard. I guess I just had to say it. I thought you would get it.
Hi Parents of HS Class of 2009! Stopping in here 10 years after my S went off to college, now looking for my D.
Had no idea this thread was still around! So great to see familiar names. Wishing everyone all the best. So cool to see posts about grandkids, etc.!
My S is 28 and doing well working and enjoying life.
Oh DTE how upsetting. I know what you mean - seems like when they have a disappointment we feel it as much if not more then them. I always want to just “fix” it but know that now that they are grown I can only listen. Difficult though.
Well quilt is done. 2 blankets done and a growth chart done. Still working the knitted blanket. Now to get my hours cleaned up because it is a DISASTER. Shower is the 26th. I know that I have time but it’s coming quickly.
DTE, very sorry to hear about D1. I would have thought that a lawyer could easily work with hearing loss issues, so it seems surprising for that job.
ShawD is now in SF with her BF and ShawSon. ShawSon and his business partner had taken their growing team on a retreat for a week in Wyoming. Same as last year but the team is rapidly growing. He just got back and is exhausted from getting to know the new team members and do a lot of managing.
I’m now walking OK. I’ve got more PT.home self-torture to do – I’m at 115 degrees flex and need to get to 120. I did fly to London a week and a half ago (a bit difficult) and then took the train to NY this past week. My big test will be the end of the month when I am likely in Sao Paulo and the next week in Stockholm/London.
Wow Shaw. That is more flexion than I have after just breaking my leg! I’m impressed. Yes I do have issues getting out of cars at times. The leg just won’t bend!!
So why is it that I can make myself get up early, either walk 2 miles with the dog at a good clip or jog a 5K with the dog in the morning (M, W, F is jogging and T, Th is walking) but I can not lose weight? I have the stamina and the determination to do the exercise. Why then can’t I have the determination to eat better/less? I mean I should be able to do that yes? Any hints from you skinny people?
@RochesterMom, not that I’d advise it, but I lost a fair amount of weight in the month following the surgery (18 lbs). I call it the total knee replacement diet. I think opioids suppress appetite. Since, then, I’ve just been having smaller portions because I’m less hungry… A friend has lost 28 lbs by not eating lots of things (sugar, etc.) but does .a lot of intermittent fasting.
I hit 120 degrees of flexion two days ago with the PT pushing. Will have to do a fair bit more so that I can go sculling again.
Hi Rochestermom - on the eating thing, I try to make it easy. Keep fresh cut fruit and premade cooked veggies & spaghetti sauce at the ready, with tiny portions of chocolate to get through. Big cooler of premade food to get me through the workday. If I don’t prepare I end up starving and buying from vending machines. Giving up a lifelong love of processed flour also helped a lot! Hope that’s useful in some way. If you could share your motivation for working out (need it!) we’d both be ahead!!
Jolynne - I have a 2 year old mutt. She loves to go out in the morning and well I enjoy the piece and quiet of just being out alone, now in the dark. I have seen tons of rabbits, deer, fox, etc on my early morning strolls. It sort of sets the tone for the day. I love being with my dog. Love being outside and lets be honest other than sleep there isn’t much that can get in my way at 5:00AM.
Today I have a lunch meeting. I have a salad that I brought from home. I know that there will be pizza there and yes I love pizza. I’m going to really try not to have any. We’ll see how well I do. That is the issue. I don’t have the motivation to not eat things that I shouldn’t. Love sweets and basically anything that is bad for me. That is what got me this big. I also eat more when under stress. New job is a lot less stress but still has it’s days. I know WHAT to do, I know WHAT I NEED to do to make it happen. Just don’t seem to have the DRIVE to MAKE if happen. I keep hearing things like visualize yourself skinny. I’ve never been skinny so not sure how to do that.
Shaw I also lost a lot of weight when I broke my leg and was on pain pills. They made me feel miserable. - upset stomach, sleepy, didn’t want to do anything, etc. I really don’t see how people get hooked on them because I felt terrible on them. Maybe it doesn’t affect everyone the way I was.
Good for you on the walking! I get nervous taking my two dogs out in the dark at 530 AM even though we live in a safe neighborhood and dogs would love it! Will remind myself how nice and peaceful it would be! ?
Hi All,
I had trouble finding the thread. Just nuts what they’ve done to this site. Meanwhile, I seem to have lost the Facebook link when I changed emails. Could someone Message me how to get back into it?
Other than the incredibly unpleasant snow and temp change last week 74-19 degrees in 14 hours) that positively hammered my garden, we’re having a good fall. Getting a new furnace to replace the non-working one the day before the temperature drop was a big plus. It took a team of 6 to get the job done – we had a 30-year-old whale of a furnace down there - easily three times the size of modern furnaces. There were some bad words said as they worked on hauling the thing up the stairs, around corners, and out the too-narrow 1889 doorways, but the job got done. Next up is getting the water heaters replaced.
DD loves being back in Colorado and made the most of her summer off with finishing 23 fourteeners (climbing mountains whose tops are at least 14,000 feet above sea level) and about 7000 miles of road trips.
I knew we had a lot of tech companies in town, but I really didn’t understand how many their were…or the weird names that they choose. It was weird reading her resume and realizing that I didn’t know a lot of the terms.
@downtoearth - I am so sorry your DD missed out on the JAG for hearing reasons. Really frustrating.
@missypie - I hope your son has found a new position. What a stress.
Baby shower done. Lots of work but so glad that I did it all. My daughter was delighted with everything that my husband and I did. Husband made a cradle (he did one for my son and DIL as well) and I made a quilt, 2 blankets, and one knitted blanket as well as a diaper cake and everything else for the shower. Done. Next up Thanksgiving. Just lots to do. Will finish putting away dishes from the shower and actually getting my laundry put away from last week. Didn’t quite get to that. After the shower my S dropped off his 3 and we had them for the night. Then Sunday morning D, SIL, and the 3 grandkids for breakfast. Busy weekend. I wouldn’t have it different but busy.
Sounds lovely, @RochesterMom!
@downtoearth - happy wedding to your D2!
@missypie - any news on the job front for your S? Unfortunately, mine is still looking.
I’m traveling for work this week, then will return home Friday and turn around and fly to FL for the weekend to see my father. He has moved out of assisted living (needed more assistance than they provide) so we need to clear out his room. I have a few other family members who are going to help. H and I did this in July after my mom’s death when we consolidated my dad down to one room.
Hello, everyone.
Son got a job as an “inclusion” teacher at a middle school. It’s a one year Title I job with a bear of a commute, but it’s a job! Thanks for asking.
Yes happy wedding DTE!
Writing from the lounge in Sao Paulo airport. Good news on the Shaw Family front.
ShawD got a job offer at the best of the places at which she interviewed. Credentialing apparently will take through January, but she has a temp job at a pretty high hourly rate. I think she goes a couple of days a week to the site of a company facility and stays overnight, so it is not idea. But, she will very likely be able to walk to her new job.
ShawSon’s company was featured in a report on a national radio station – 20 minutes…
Great news MP! I’ve been hoping you would let us know that soon!!!
Shaw great news that both of your 2 are chasing their dreams and making things happen.
I’m looking forward to the new grand daughter - yes she finally shared at the shower and it’s another girl. So far 4 grandson and with this one 3 granddaughters.
H and I are hopeful that we are only going to work 1(ish) more years. He will be the big 60 is another year so hopefully that will be the time to change. Potential that it will be sooner as I know that are D would love us to watch the baby. We shall see. I like my job although the new project that I was nominated for is longer hours then I like. Yesterday 10.5 hours at work. Not really what I signed on for.
