Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Awkward transition back to the post prom food. We don’t have a Costco membership and we let our Sam’s membership expire after not using it for about 18 months. Who do you think has the better quality frozen in a bag type of appetizers - Target or Walmart?

Modadunn: Someone gave me almost the same recipe, except I use currant jelly, not grape. Its best with meatball, but also good with lil’ smokies.

Missypie: How about frozen chicken wings? We had a surprise BDay party for DS, and used a bag of frozen honey bbq chicken wings for his friends. Gone in the blink of an eye :)

Missypie, what’s awkward about going from BO to food??? ;)

Out of respect for the lovely prom dresses (although they will probably never be worn again), I’m trying to avoid messy chicken wings (and no chocolate fountain, more out of respect for my furniture and carpeting.)

Thanks for all the food ideas- I’ll use them for the graduation party.

I definitely fall on the Ranger side of the Ranger-Morelli debate. Which is why the puppy is not named Morelli.

Called my D at college to tell her about the new puppy - she’s mad because she won’t be home until November and will miss all the puppy cuteness. I had to comfort her with the thought that S is being replaced by a dog; when she went away, she was irreplaceable. Delicate ego!

Kudos to those of you who support dog rescue efforts.
I started a rescue for my breed some 10 years ago and it is going strong today. We place close to 100 dogs in need a year of all ages and we are just a small non-profit run by volunteers.
Yes these pups provide a bit of a much needed distraction, but I always worry about the homes they will find. I breed to keep a dog for myself, I always hope for small litters but this time that did not happen. Well 2 more months to worry about that, meanwhile what to do about banking, health insurance, transport, laundry, course selection takes precedence.
We are encouraging #theoryson to go easy his first year - ease in, really take classes he enjoys as well as learn something new. Not to worry about getting something over with (bad plan I think first year - well at least first term)
I think he is in agreement

i saw somewhere a chicken app. recipe. chicken chunks wrapped in bacon then dipped in brown sugar, maybe? does that ring a bell for anyone.

<a href=“45363 Recipe | Group Recipes”>45363 Recipe | Group Recipes;

fruit kabobs.

missy - find a friend with a sams or costco card.

instead of meatballs you could do smoked sausage slices. in pork or turkey. honestly, i wouldn’t really plan the menu around what girlfriend likes. as long as there are some things that she will eat.

Missy… target. nothing truly against Walmart, but I just think Target is better in terms of their humanitarian efforts AND their support of their people. Plus… Walmart’s new Ad campaign to launch their new logo etc is a complete rip off of Target’s. Of course, a big box grocery would probably be about the same price. Maybe I just like Target because my brother is at the corporate offices and he LOVES his job. I mean really truly loves it.

Yeah… I’d easily take a friend to costco if they needed something. It’d be fun actually.

missypie --how many are coming and are you using forks??
I am veggie and so am thinking…
That said, I bought the chicken wings from Costco and heated them in the oven for S. As I posted before, these 42 kids barely ate anything and S did not think that was unusual at all–but I did.
What else are you serving?

Oh truth is stranger than fiction! LOL, Historymom, I HAVE babysat for Viggo Mortensen! I just thought Historymom’s remark was so funny-it had real meaning to me!

Do you have Trader Joe’s???

So…last night was senior awards night and a NROTC representative was supposed to show up to present the ‘big check’ to my son, but somewhere along the line, someone dropped th ball and nobody showed up. S was disappointed and embarrassed as he stood on the stage alone and listened to the principal (who was not prepared to present this award) try to talk about the rotc program. Especially frustrating was the fact that the principal kept talking about Army rotc when son is proud to be joining the Navy. Sigh…so much for the fond senior memories.

SLUMOM–you’ve gotta spill some details!

S1732–D had a similar experience at a statewide banquet last week. The principal of her school happened to be on the awards committee. He spoke at length about the boy from D’s school who won the award, as well as the boy’s brother. D felt like he couldn’t pick her out of a police line up!

See, this is why I always think I’m going to cry at these mementous events, but hardly ever do…because it seems like something screwy always happens, either of my child’s creation, or someone else’s.

No Trader Joes in Dallas. Giving the shopping hub that Dallas is, I’m always amazed that there are retail concepts that we don’t have.

Mike, the chicken bites sound really good.

What a great place to be lurking, with all the food talk! I just mailed out the party invites – mainly to celebrate S’s graduation, but also to salute D’s world travel adventures. Anyway, now that the party is official, i need to figure out the food.

s1732 - oh how disappointing - I know you hurt for your son. It seems there is always something like this that happens and someone gets embarrassed or hurt. It is bad enough when you see it happen to someone lese, but terrible when it is your own kid you see hurt.

I am kind of dreading “awards” this year.

Of course, it is ironic that it was a military guy who forgot to show up - what do you think happens if a military enlistee just forgets to show up?

um, I’m going to guess something not very good happens?

S1732–that is such a sad stroy for your S and I hope he knows how proud you are of him.

Ok–I really messed up on the announcements–ordered 1/2 what we need and forgot to put the name card in and they are sealed.
DH says to mail them as everyone (except one) will know who he is because we did put pictures in and the one family will see the return address (old friends). The other 1/2 I have taken note cards and written a few lines that S is graduating and enclosed a pic.
I feel really stupid about this but I think it will take forever to get more made and DH says it is not worth the time or $$$. Thoughts???What would you do?

oregon 101 that so sounds like something I would do. You have my empathy. Don’t feel stupid. Feel harried, stressed, sad and anxious, but not stupid OK…we all fumble.

S1732- That’s terrible! Reminds me of last year when my twin daughters were called up TOGETHER to receive their track awards. One received scholar athlete the other didn’t. The coach had nothing to say about them as individuals and there were three other sets of siblings on the team who all were called up solo. I was furious.
