Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

Lindz, That reaction from the GC is so scary and inappropriate that I hope you mentioned it to the principal. There is no excuse.

I’m glad your D left with her head held high. She worked too hard to be treated so poorly on three different awards. If someone official asks her tomorrow why she left, would she share why?

lindz126–that is horrible. I do hope you will let your school board know this comment. I am truly serious, what a bad GC. at least tell the principal.

countingdown—I went to the asst principal after the gc, whose reply was “this didn’t happen at school sooooo” (didn’t happen?) I was reporting that a student told my d repeatedly in texts she was willing to show them that he made a suicide attempt and was still suicidal after leaving hospital"

the principal passed by as I was getting ready to “educate” the asst principal…he handled it properly, but you know, I do need to inform him of his staff’s inappropriate responses.

Our awards ceremony is by invite only–if you are going to be awarded something, you got an invite in the mail. Some kids complain that they had to sit through the whole ceremony and only got a measly $100 scholarship.

Hello?!! That’s over $33 an hour you just got paid to sit around. It’ll be years before you’ll make that kind of money again.

lmnop–that’s very true. cute…

S1 was very pleasantly surprised when he figured out much money his unpaid summer research project raked in for college. I also told him not to expect to get that kind of $$ again for a long time, too!

congrats counting–did your son win scholarships out of the internship?

lindz, I’d let the principal know. If the GC or asst principal had blown off a student who had come with the same concern, that student may never have tried to get the principal involved…and who knows what could have happened then.

Lindz – yes.

I think our school has the right idea about what to do after AP exams. If you don’t take AP you can spend the entire 4th quarter doing a senior program/project. One kid took an EMT class and will not work in the ER wing of a Ortho office for sports injuries. Another group of kids will leave for Italy at the end of the week and travel etc. Some kids shadow careers, do internships, whatever. There’s as many ideas as there are students. It’s a three week thing and then at the beginning of june just prior to graduation all the seniors come back together for senior program sharing night where everyone (including parents) see what everyone else spent their time doing. While there is some annoyance that they arent getting up and going to school every day, it’s better than senioritis. At least he’s being productive and busy even if I have to now drive younger D to school every day!

And Lindz… go above the principal to the Superintendent. Seriously. That kind of response is actionable and EVERY member of the faculty and administration should be very clear in their responsibilities here. HUGE error in judgment that would have me fuming!!!

O101 - I can’t imagine him really wanting you to miss seeing him jump, but I can understand the pressure thing. S told us we shouldn’t bother coming to see him at the Regionals since he’ll only be part of a relay and running for all of 53 seconds, and he has a point. Could you sneak down there without him knowing? I find that binoculars bring me right into the action, without ever having to invade S’s space.

O101, my son didn’t play sports but did compete in Moot Court. He said it would make him nervous if we came. The finals were in front of appellate court judges and I really wanted to come but I figured that he didn’t need extra stress. He has always spoken a little more slowly than other kids – word retrieval issues – and while this has gotten better, he would write the opening but let his partner read it because he could cover 10% to 20% more in the same 10 minutes. They did produce a CD of the finals (not just for me, they always do), so I could listen to it.

lindz, I think you would certainly want to inform the superintendent but I would consider informing the School Committee or Board of Education of whatever it is called in your town. I suspect that the GC’s and Asst. Principal’s actions would have created legal liability for the School and thus the town. That’s a guess, but I think they’d want to know. Does anyone know if the school/town would be liable if the kid had committed suicide after they had ignored the warning of if he’d brought a gun into school and harmed someone?

Chintzy, there isn’t much to spill here! I am from Watertown, NY & I used to babysit Viggo Mortensen & his two brothers, Charles & Walter. Viggo always had his head in a book, a nice kid. Funny thing was when he became famous & my oldest D#1 brought up his name and the new movie he was in, I said “Oh, I used to babysit Viggo.” I think her jaw dropped down to the floor & she wouldn’t believe me so I told her to go online and read his bio, which she did!

Viggo is an alum of St. Lawrence University, he did the commencement address a number of years ago. I don’t think we are getting as exciting a speaker as Viggo when we go up to Canton, NY this weekend for D#2’s graduation on Sunday. I have no idea who it will be!

oh lindz, the award thing is just terrible. D must have felt great to get up and leave. I remember in 8th grade, my D unexpectedly did not get the art award. The art teacher called that night to say that they had to give it to a boy because the girls were scarfing up all the awards. HUH??
I just said that HS, college and beyond will provide ample opportunity for my D to win awards.

DD has 5 AP exams this week. Yesterday was the day she had 2 exams back to back. As she was getting ready to leave the house this AM, she suddenly started running around grabbing her stuff to go. She realized, that because she was at an off campus testing site all day yesterday, she had no idea where she needed to be for her test this AM (they tell them the day before). They are using 2-3 different locations, local churches, as well as the school. Hope this doesn’t rattle her too much!

DD told me that so far, 1 AP went really well, 1 she doesn’t know, and 1 was a train wreck:( She expected the train wreck though (Psychology). Told me all along, the teacher admittedly didn’t know the subject well, hadn’t taught Psych in over 10 years. She also said, that on the few occasions they had a substitute teacher, they learned more in thoses few hours than with the regular teacher :frowning: Makes me mad.

DD just texted me, she guessed correctly and headed to the correct testing site this AM

TheA, yes son is done with his entire undergrad degrees (he’s getting a BS in Bio and a BA in History on Sunday). He had wanted to go to med school but didn’t get in and has no backup plan. His Jr year grades were a drop from the prior year and the med schools don’t look at Sr year. So he’s going to work for his research professor (this time getting paid, YEAH) with a commitment for two years and then reapply to med school. His GPA and his science GPA went up quite a bit his senior year since he got A’s in all his classes so the reapplication along with 3 years total of research should help him. And as he says, in two years he may decide he would rather continue on a research tract and go back to graduate school instead (he could always decide that in one year).

Today is the double AP testing for D and then she’s done except for the projects. I’ll be at the school doing my weekly volunteering and since I bring lunch I’ll see her between the two tests. Hoping they give them at least 30 mins break between the tests so she has some down time.

D has her cheerleading banquet on Tuesday. After hearing some stories here, it should be a “fun” evening. Scholarships to seniors are also expected. I was on the parent committee the last two years (not this year, I had enough). Every year we divided the scholarships up to any girl that provided an essay. They BETTER do that this year.

I hate it that I feel this way, but I feel the same way about the choir scholarships…Son BETTER get one. Last year I think there were 8 small scholarships and all 8 went to girls. I keep telling myself that last year’s boys were not high on the academic scale (the most talented boy was in the bottom quarter of the class.)

Jersey–hope they do they continue this year too.

shawbridge–I’m sure you’re right and I do think the school system would be liable had they not shown due diligence in their actions in response to a warning from a parent, (esp since written texts were available so it was not just hearsay). I plan to speak with the principal and let him know what was stated, prior to him getting involved. If he minimizes it, I’ll then go to the superintendant’s office. thanks…

D2 was notified yesterday that she received the local scholarship in her favorite sport. We need to contact college to see if she can accept it because of NCAA rules. The ceremony, however, is on the evening she will be on campus for registration so would not be able to attend. :(

She is finished with AP exams!!!
