Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

missypie - LOL

We bought from Dell. So far seems to be working but itā€™s vista and D was an XP expert so she is learning. So far it doesnā€™t seem to be as bad as we had been led to believe.

I stepped out for a few hours, now I have three pages to catch up on.

We too are in the PC vs. Mac dilemma. But then again, weā€™re still in the UR vs. AU dilemma too:(

Oh my, Iā€™m now following Sockington on Twitter, with almost a half-million other people.

That darn cat!

thanks TA for getting this startedā€¦I was anxious I would somehow miss this new thread and be out in the cc woods searchingā€¦glad I found you all. reminds me of my d who keeps saying, I just want to start college alreadyā€¦keeps expressing how ridiculous high school isā€¦although sheā€™s happily going to her AP Lit prep group that her teacherā€™s sponsoring tonight at Borders

and TA I think youā€™re very resilient actually, with what youā€™ve been dealing with, as well as the launching a kid stuff. try to remember thatā€¦

Should we have some sort of house warming party in our new home? Or is everyone too worn out from yesterdayā€™s Cinco de Mayo festivities?

D has been begging for a macbook, macbook, macbook! for over a year, and we were considering that as a grad present. Now sheā€™s off to a school that gives every student a ā€œfreeā€ (ha!) laptop at the beginning of Freshman and Junior years. Itā€™s a Lenovo ThinkPad T400 and comes loaded with all the software sheā€™ll need, plus tech support on campus is supposed to be very good, since everyone uses the same computer. She thinks it makes sense to have both, but I question the wisdom of buying an expensive computer just for her to go on facebook and iTunes.

Iā€™m starting to browse the Bed Bath & Beyond website with D, getting ideas, etc. D is leaving for college June 23rd:

[Bed Bath & Beyond - Shop for College, Back to School](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/btsHome.asp?order_num=-1&)

Shopping for you college dorm or apartment has never been easier. Bed Bath & Beyond has a program called ā€˜Pack N Holdā€™ that makes it easy to shop for everything you need to set up your new dorm room or apartment without having to transfer it across the country, or even having to store it until moving in day.

All you have to do is go to any Bed Bath & Beyond and ask the first associate you see where to register for a college room Pack N Hold. First, you will fill out a form and let them know what college you are going to, and when you would like to pick up your items. Then they will give you a cool gismo to walk around the store with, and you can scan anything you want to for your dorm room or apartment. If you are overwhelmed and unsure of what you need, there is a list of suggested items and quantities that they can provide so you donā€™t forget anything.

When you are done picking out everything you want for your room, you take the gismo back to the associate, and they will print you out a copy of what you have selected. Then the store sends the list of your selections to the BBB closest to the college you are going to (or to any store you choose to pick your items up from).

When you arrive at your college, you can then go to the store you have chosen on the date you have given and pick up your items - they will be waiting for you and all you have to do is pay for them and go enjoy your new home!!

One might ask, why do this early and not wait until itā€™s time to move in? The most important reason is that going away to college is stressful enough, and there is so much going on, shopping to set up your room would only add to the stress. Secondly, most retail companies set up there back to school merchandise in July, so by the time you actually get to college most of the cool stuff is no longer available to purchase. If you do it early and have it waiting for you, you get the best assortment available to choose from.

And if you arenā€™t going away to college, but are moving out of mom and dadā€™s house? The same rules apply. You can still have the merchandise held for you at your local BBB, and you still get to pick out the best merchandise instead of whatā€™s left over.

If mom and dad arenā€™t coming with to settle you into your new home, you can purchase a BBB gift card for the amount of the Pack N Hold and pay for it that way.

Going away to college is one of the greatest experiences you will ever have, and this should help make a smooth transition into your living situation.

Sure, itā€™s convenient, but how can I use a 20% off coupon for every item if I do it that way??

I can vouch (again!) for Pack & Hold - itā€™s awesome.

Missypie, you pay when you pick it up, so you can use ALL those coupons youā€™ve been stockpiling then.

D#3 has already stated that she wants a Mac, she will need a printer as well. Her school of choice does give some kind of discount through the bookstoreā€™s link, looks like about $50.00 off. I will have to find our Consumer Reports & check it out.

H & I hate the subject of ā€œstart up costsā€ (it being the 3rd time around) computer, printer, extra long twin sheets, blanket and/or comforter. I am sure we have shower totes & two refrigerators (2 different sizes) out in the barn, along with some other stuff!

Mailing out the vistaprint.com announcements for D#2ā€™s graduation from SLU today & D#3ā€™s HS graduation party invitations. Another milestone recently-Sonā€™s school photos from his junior year-all mailed out-last school photos for us. Had to tell everybody these were our last school photos, been clipping & sending for 19 years (1990-2009) Now, that deserved a couple of glasses of wine! LOL

Yayyyyy! RL commitments have kept me away, plus I was sleeping it off  ) so now here we are!!! Thanks The Analyst! Now I must go read and respond to the ooodles of posts that beat me over here.

Sā€™s college sent a flyer with a ā€œbedding packageā€ that can be purchased. I need to do some research to see if it makes sense. It will make sense if I can have the items shipped directly there (need to chack out that option as well)
eek STILL too much to do

missypie: I am floating in that Twitter black hole too. I am very computer literate but this one has me stumped. Does it cost to get the text messages (I have unlimited on our family plan). And how do I get the oneā€™s I want to update meā€¦

As far as computers go, I know how to rebuild desktops but not so much laptops so I will be looking for laptop for son - most likely PC because I could then help trouble shoot if there was ever a probelm. My main issue is costā€¦ my family has mentioned pitching in together for it so maybe we can get him a good one.

I do use mac at work - but I still prefer PCs.

we used BBB last year for my sā€”yep, you can use as many coupons as you have itemsā€¦

and when you arrive to pick up your package at your s/dā€™s collegeā€”you can change your mind, take out items youā€™ve rethought, add items you now want, or stuff now on sale

I am used to Facebook friends requests where you click something to confirm, where you can be taken to their page, etc. I got a request that a client wanted to follow me on Twitter (or did he want me to follow him?) I followed the link, signed up, then no further mention on the guy who asked me to followā€¦I donā€™t think I even have his cell phone numberā€¦

GAh!!! I missed this start up! Need to go back and catch up! Thanks for finding us a new home! :)

On your twitter homepage, in the upper r h corner, you should see something like this:
12 Following 9 Followers 0 updates

These are links that will show you whoā€™s in each category, so your client should show up there if heā€™s following you.

You can set the controls so that you get updates to your phone if you want, or just to the website.

Thanks. We already have some items on BB&B ready for pickup next month and I noticed that the tension rod we put on the list is the wrong size for the dorm closet. I was thinking that I would have to buy it anyway and then stand in line again to return it. Good to know I can do all this before we hit the register.

My S never liked the Mac, that is until his sister got a Mac Laptop through her HS, now she has to keep taking it back from him because he likes usinging it so much better than his PC desktop. So he will get a powerbook as a combined grad gift from the family.

I managed to start a Holy War on the Berkeley side by asking which was better for the campus.

We are also getting him a little printer as a back up for when they cant use the schools one. Told him this is the back up. Seen some nice ones on sale for 70-80$.

What fun

And do the BBB coupons really never expire, even though they each bear an expiration date? (Forgive my ignorance, but I was a Linens & Things fan.)
