Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

I told D if she overspends on dinners out or luxury purchases the first few months in college, I won’t buy her a ticket home for Thanksgiving. I already checked airfare and it’s twice as much at that time, I can’t imagine what it will cost in a few months when I know what her schedule would be. She was fine with it and even mentioned perhaps going to her roommate’s house for Thanksgiving.

So AP Calc BC finished…they weren’t out of the test until almost 12:30 and I’m sure they started around 8 or 8:15 at the latest. I only know this because today was my day for volunteering at the HS and I kept waiting for D to come and pick up her lunch. The proctor told me that this is one of the longest of the AP tests. Glad we’re down two and only have 4 to go. Next up Friday European History.

kleibo I so understand where you’re coming from . DS has only been 2 1/2 hours away but DD is going to be 8 hours away. It seems so far. I know that in reality it probably won’t be any different once we get her there because we didn’t see our son all that often during his 4 years away but it sure feels different.

Jerseyshore, if they’re finished with classes on Tuesday (check school calendar) you can just book a flight home in the evening on Tuesday. That’s what I already did.

fireflyscout – we’re also interested in some kind of mattress topper. Let us know if you come across a winner.

For posterity, here is a link to our previous thread:

OMG! I just got here and we’re already pages and pages in…man! Starting to read now… What about introductions? Should we take this opportunity to tell where in the world we are and give a little kid bio?

I THINK S2 will get a Mac–good for music. He’ll need a printer as well.

Happy anniversary Sunday #TM (before I forget)

We haven’t gotten ANY info from Oberlin yet–I’m jealous of those of you who have some semblance of marching orders.

thanks for the link my-3-sons

If I can get the jersey knit sheets in XL I’ll do it before we go. They are so easy to take care of. Might buy the comforter there as it is a bulky item. My S never uses a top sheet, just the comforter or fleece blanket, so if I can find something not sold as a set, I may do that.

I will probably order the laundry service offered that will clean pillows, blankets and comforters, and just send the kid with a pile of quarters for the rest. But we need to also go to laundromat for laundry101. One more thing to do in the ever shortening time between now and gone.

SJTH that is an excellent idea since I think we may attract a new crop of 'rents!

So me, I am the mom of at least one future Gael. My D will be attending Saint Mary’s College in Moraga California.

My other D has also deposited at SMC but will find out soon (maybe today I hear) if she has come off the WL at Scripps College.

**DizziMom: S is having nothing to do w/ me. I do a friend request once every two weeks or so but he always rejects me. **

Ha ha ha…same story here:) I might try, “all I want for mothers day”…see if that gets me anywhere!

Matress Toppers I found a great mattress topper at Sams Club. It’s about 2-2.5 inches thick. I can’t remember how much it cost, but I do remember it was reasonable.

Hey, I was all teary yesterday in the 09 thread. I figured no tears were allowed there, so I’m going to shed them over here sometime soon.

I’m the mother of 3 kids. DD 18 y.o. and off to a yet to be chosen college. Either University of Richmond or American University.

My two boys, are both 17 y.o. (not twins, one is bio, the other is my ward). They will both be off to college next year.

We live in Maryland.

How do you know already if classes are done on the Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving?!?! She won’t be doing her Fall schedule until June 26th.

As it is now, I have her on a flight going down on June 23rd for a few days of Orientation; summer classes are over on August 7th (Friday) and she’s due back for Fall 2 weeks later. I haven’t made those flight arrangements either. As far as airline reservations, I just have her on a one-way trip to Florida. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think that she will know anything either, until she’s down there .

D’s school has the academic calendar online for 2009-2010, so I know she’s done on Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Ooooh, now I have 4 threads to check: '09 and '13 parents of… for me and S’s college and D’s college for them! No time for work!!

ksabbo, you are going to have fun next year!

I am the mother of two boys. The 21 year old is a third year systems engineering student at UVA, who will be leaving for Brazil on June 27th to return after Christmas. He spent both of the last two summers abroad, so hasn’t spent much time at home since he first left as a freshman. But, we go to see him, he emails alot, and phones a fair amount. He is such a night-owl, I’m fine with that arrangement.

The 18 year old is going to West Virginia University in the fall to major in biometric systems engineering. He is under orders that he must come home for Thanksgiving–already trying to get out of it since S1 won’t be home. WVU is 5-6 hour drive so won’t be as easy to pop in but H plans to go to a fair number of the football games anyway and the way the two of them are glued to the NBA games I wouldn’t be surprised if H is there for a lot of basketball too.

TheAnalyst: WVU is a popular destination for the small college bound group of students at our high school. I see you’re in VA. Do you still get in-state tuition? I know WVU’s policy with some neighboring states was quite generous. Lots of WVU flags flying in some of our local neighborhoods

We do get in-state tuition based on his major, which is part of the academic common market. WVU is also very generous with merit aid, which is calculated automatically based on GPA and SAT so you know exactly what you will get prior to applying. Our son has a Mountaineer Scholarship, which is good for four years. No essay, no recommendations, no list of ECs. The application basically consists of your name and address. School sends transcript, college board sends SAT scores, and college sends acceptance letter. They accept about 90% of applicants. That process was very appealing to our son, needless to say.

However, beyond that we have loved everything about the school from the first visit to the weekly emails we get from the dean of freshman engineering. The school is just a breath of fresh air.

JerseyShoreMom - “I told D if she overspends on dinners out or luxury purchases the first few months in college, I won’t buy her a ticket home for Thanksgiving”

^ I LIKE THAT THOUGHT. Wish Spirit Air flew to Nashville.

I’m mom of two. S1 on his way to Vanderbilt and D1 (or do I say D2 for second child?) is a sophomore (hs class 2011). Since she’s been 8 she has wanted to go to UCLA. BUT, when S1 got accepted to UCSD, the $$ we were to pay for OOS was almost 100% so I am trying to gently tell her that she needs to think of a few other options. OR start getting scholarships now… oh, two more years of this… crying out of sadness and crying out of frustration. GLAD to be a part of this wonderful group! ::Cheers/clink/clink:: < finishing what was left over from the cinco de mayo party in '09 thread :D

I would love to have a cc reunion of this group some day. My H accuses me of essentially having one of those Internet “affairs” because I am so addicted to this site. Even though I assure him the vast majority of posters are women, that perhaps makes it even worse!

Anyway, H got the offer letter for the new position signed, sealed and delivered today. 25% cut in pay, not so good; any job at all, priceless.

TheAnalyst, that’s such good news about your H’s job!

Analyst
Priceless is right. Is it possible to be both happy for you and sad for you at the same time?

Harriet, thank you so much. From here on out, I promise to stay on point with college related discussions only. I just felt too exposed to start unique threads, but at the same time I am such a rule-oriented person, the guilt of going off topic kills me.

Oh, Analyst, I am sooo happy for you and your H. Obviously, we all work for money and a 25% cut isn’t great, but for men in particular, their career and success there is such a big part of who they are and how they feel about themselves.

TM, I’m happy RPI came through, but can feel your stress over more decisions from here. BTW, our S’s are cut from the same cloth - mine thinks top sheets are useless. Here’s hoping your S decides RPI is the right choice after all.
