Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Can we think of some special door prize for all of us who are still on board on April 30? Some honorary title?

^^^ the walking wounded?

^^The Unsinkable Molly Browns…jk

“and the band played on”…

madbean: hope your son has lots of $$ saved for food in London; so expensive…PM me if you need some (relatively) cheaper ideas on where to eat

Momdoc~Congrats on the newest Fighting Irish class of 2015 :D

cgpm - congrats on your son’s decision but you’re making me homesick. I’m in the Midwest but my family is spread from New Braunfels to Bastrop so I am very familiar with the area and the school. Great school and it sounds like he found the perfect fit.

BK - glad to hear your daughter is okay but I’m sure it was super scary for you! Sure puts this whole thing in perspective!

Momdoc - so happy that your S will be able to attend the school he most wanted to attend!

Congrats to those of you who are off the SS Indecision and a big “hang in there” for those of you who seem to have some time left before you can disembark.

We are visiting Duke and our day 1 was full of workshops, presentations and reception.
We even had a chance to meet with the adcom who reviewed S2 app… very insightful!
S2 is staying overnight on campus. His host is a basketball player on the varsity team…I can not wait to hear all about that :)

Duke did a very good job addressing all issues that a newbie college parent could have (many discussed here on this forum). Will keep y’all posted on what tomorrow brings.
Waving to all

Here in the heart of America, we have DORM ROOMS PICKED!

It didn’t all go as planned. IT glitch locked all incoming students out of the system for more than 4 hours after it opened. Texts, tweets and FB posts were angry then, funny now.

Our son and his best friend will be roommates in a suite-style room with two suite mates TBA. Their suite has a living room as well, is right by the entry door, next to a study room…and the best news for parents on move-in day!!! First Floor!

As the parent of a 2014 who didn’t decide until 8 pm the night of May 1st, I can tell you we were pretty much the last ones off the ship last year. It was a very, very tough decision. We were all pretty emotional when things were said and done.

Congrats to those who’ve escaped the seasickness! Speaking of sick, I caught a cold-yuck. Got it the day we left for the 2.5 day visit to one of DS top choices. There were some interesting things he found out about himself and the school, but it’s still a top choice. Took another school completely off the list after today’s visit. They really didn’t do much to wow him at the admitted student day, and he (and I) came away with the same poor fit feeling we had on 1st visit. He wanted to re-look it since it’s a great school and maybe he didn’t get the correct impression the first time. Well, seems he did, because he walked away knowing he didn’t want to attend there today.

So I’m trying to kick this cold while we plan the weekend visits to the other top two choices. Hopefully next week will bring final clarity to the decision process.

Wow, things are really hopping on the old boat here!

After all of my worrying the past few days, I finally had a good, long, friendly talk with D tonight. She was in a mood to let go with how she’s been feeling, and she’s remarkably calm, not the inner wreck I feared.

She’d already pretty much crossed off 2 of her top 3 in-hand chances, still likes her WL option. I showed her the college pick site, and she had a lot of fun with it. And my “Secret #1 School” came out ahead, even on top of the dream WL school! I’m beginning to wonder if the WL really will ever happen - but that’s up to her, and fate and those lovely natural consequences we parents love to rely on (but that talk with her will wait for another day or two).

She was looking at recreation facilities, and comparing dorms, and watching move-in videos … I think she’s sold. It’s great to see her so happy. And it’s especially great to see that she did this on her own, did her own extra research, read reviews, e-mailed students. I think I have the confident, enthusiastic kid I always wanted to have.

And cost didn’t come up once in the conversation. Neither did prestige. She didn’t even factor them into the college pick calculations. Good for her! I think the chip on her shoulder has completely healed!

No congrats yet - we’ve just started packing our stateroom is all. But she’ll get off at one of the next ports, I’m sure. I’ll let you know.

On vacation in Austin posting from my phone so I will keep it brief… Congrats to all who have a decision in hand!! And to those still waiting… My thoughts are with you… The wait will soon be over!

VAMom - Get well soon! It sounds that you had very productive visits and are one step closer to the decision.

EmmyBet – Happy to hear everything is working out for your D. It seams that she will be happy no matter how the WL turns out.

olderwisermom ~ Sounds like the ideal dorm! Glad to hear you are done.

VaMom2015 ~ I caught a cold too (from DH).

EmmyBet ~ Glad your “secret #1 school” is on top of the list, lol.

Have a great day, everyone!

OWM: You’re moving right along! Great news about the dorm selection!

Emmybet: Land ho! It sounds as if you’re making progress toward the shore.

Great to hear that so many of you have left the ship and safe on dry ground.

Good Luck to those still with visits planned…hopefully you will be docking soon.

We’re on dry land!! Whoot-whoot!! So, one more 2011 grad off the boat, and a mom looking for a celebratory bloody-mary…anyone know where the on-shore bar is? I’m buying the first round when we get to celebrate ALL our kids on terra firma!

Congrats to the landed!

Emmy, glad your D is starting to pack her bags.

blueiguana: Are you going to leave us hanging? Inquiring minds want to know where???

Just heard from a friend whose daughter is a Mizzou grad (headed to med school) that the dorm our son and his BF picked is an awesome place for them. (It’s only six years old so I wan’t familiar with it.) They are in a Math & Science Learning Group, but apparently all four floors of the dorm are filled with serious students in techy fields. She says it’s great for developing study groups and very quiet during testing time.

Happy voyaging to everyone. Being done is very freeing!

Sorry OWM… total brain drain! Bluejr will be a very happy first year at UVa come August. Not going to lie, I’ve had my fingers crossed for over a year! :)

While you were posting, I was searching - Let’s keep this bumped with all of our disembarked passengers!
