Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Katie93. If she feels right about the college, it’s the right one for her. Glad you’re here.

Dorm Mountain has taken over our family room. We’re driving, so are not shipping anything or buying anything there. Of course it just dawned on me that we’ll be in a hotel the night before and so probably don’t want to leave all his stuff in the back of the car overnight (for security’s sake) and so need to slog it all up to our hotel room?

No roommate assignment here yet.

Pinot Noir and Jaylynn: We are on psychologist number two (the first one did not like dealing with our insurance) and pediatrician number two (he was only interested in prescribing Ritalin even though my son had a bad reaction to it and the psychologist recommended other meds). Thank goodness for a friend’s rec for a new ped who is very ADHD friendly and our new psychology group which specializes only in ADHD/Autism patients. DS’s first grade teacher and his new psychologist both said that getting an IEP in the course of one school year is unusually fast and had I not gone forth with testing on my own that he would still be lost in the system. The psychologist gave me some great advice at our last meeting about never letting them hold an IEP meeting without our presence and also to never let them unclassify him (because they will try once he improves and getting him classified again is almost impossible). We are still awaiting new meds though…

Add us to the launch list too (sigh…) - 8/26 which is just three weeks from today (hope to see my fellow Pomona 2016 mom down there).

Hello all!! Wow - new thread and SO many pages already - impressive group! I haven’t posted in a while but have tried to keep up.

All this talk about wisdom teeth makes me feel like “mother of the year” - I totally forgot to schedule my son’s appointment and now its too late!! And this is my second child - great mom right??!! It has been such a busy summer and he has spend most of it traveling, at the beach and working (that’s my excuse). He is going to have to wait until December, I really hope its not too horrible for him by then.

We also leave on the 23rd for the big move-in. He seems very excited and ready. We recently went to the local reception and it was awesome – very well attended by incoming freshman, current students and parents. I think it made it all seem very real and exciting.

Good luck to everyone these last few weeks {{{sigh}}

@Katie93mom-
“I am clinging to the edge of my composure on most days now…the thought of her not being in the house everyday is overwhelming! She is my only and it has been just the two of us since she was a baby.”

Same here with my S. I think this is all much harder on me than it is him. He already knows I am slightly nuerotic, but I don’t want him to see me being a total lunatic. So-I will just keep hanging on and have my breakdown when I am home alone with the cats. They won’t tell anybody!

I started working at his HS in the middle of his freshman year. So I feel like he has left me there as well. I am absolutely hating my job right now-there are many more reasons than S not being there. With S going off to college (which is absolutely wonderful and was always the plan), a close co-worker retiring, a good friend moving 3 hours away, I feel like I am left in everyones dust. Also feeling a bit jealous. So-I need to figure out my next step as well. Definitely a career change (or employer change), clean this house from top to bottom, and maybe find some enjoyable things to do outside of the house. Need to focus on me for a while. S will appreciate being “on his own” and figuring his new life out.

Plus he is only going to be 20-25 minutes away so I got crazy lucky in that!

Good luck to you and hold on tight!

Yet another long time lurker coming out of the shadows…

D leaves 8/30 for Landmark College. Feel free to add us to the list. The dorm mountain has only just begun!

In mid July her wisdom teeth started to bother her. We had to scurry around trying to find a surgeon to squeeze her in before mid August. She had them out last Tuesday and is recovering nicely.

It has been just the two of us for 15 years so I will be all alone. Keeping myself busy by getting the house ready for sale. D alternates between episodes of clingy-ness and episodes of nest-fouling. Sort of a temporary bipolar disorder?!?!

Looking forward to hearing move-in stories!

Nellie and Glopop…so glad to hear from other moms in my shoes so to speak…it feels like even more of a loss when it has only been the two of you for sooo long! I also plan on a meltdown with the cats Nellie…they will be very sympathetic as they also adore the soon to be college girl and will miss her as much as I do! You are lucky he will be so close…mine will be a 16 hours drive away…no quick lunch visits for us.

I’m so happy to see all the new parents here! And mamita, I hung out in the B student threads a lot in the past year but since S graduated I guess his HS GPA doesn’t define who he is and what his options are quite the same way anymore, so I sort of stopped posting there and moved most of my chit chat over here.

2.5 weeks to go. No mountain and a decent amount of shopping still to do.

Once he’s launched it will be just D and I for the next 3 years. I am watching to see how my fellow college '16 single moms are handling this now.

PS: Both of my parents are SMU grads, both went on to PhDs at Ivies.

Welcome to all the new members! It’s exciting to follow everyone’s stories.

A particular thank-you to mamita for reminding us that there are many ways to excel, and that challenges can come in many different forms. Also for reminding us that past performance is no guarantee of future results. Sometimes kids who excelled in a well-structured HS setting struggle with the self-starting that’s required in college – and vice versa. Some kids who were top-of-the-class in HS have difficulty adjusting to being middle-of-the-pack (especially if they have a lot of identity wrapped up in being top dog). Sometimes kids who struggled in HS find their stride and perform better in college. But whether the ride is smooth or bumpy, it’s always more fun with good company!

I’ve got piles accumulating in my living room too. DH left this morning to climb Mt. Whitney with a friend, and did not take kindly to my query that couldn’t he just scale Dorm Mountain instead?

We were told last winter that D2012 should have her wisdom teeth out eventually, but that it isn’t pressing. With the schedule being so tight this summer (she’s squeezing an 8-week internship into an 8.5-week summer break) we decided to put off the dentistry. I’m hoping she’ll hold until next May.

Dorm and roommate assignments were posted this morning, but there are two girls in the class with the same name, and D doesn’t know which one is her roommate. Hopefully email and/or FB will clarify.

Hi lurkers, and welcome!!! It’s very nice for me to see a few who are in my shoes, with the student very anxious about leaving and the mom facing a VERY empty nest. I’m excited too, for both of us…but there will be rough moments. Lucky you, NervousNellie! D would be SOOOO happy if she could be so close. But I do think the distance will be good for her-- only 4 hours away.

SMU is a great school Katie93! Sounds as if it will be wonderful.

D will have to stay on my health insurance (I am a [very] small business)-- since her school doesn’t offer it. I’ve wanted to call our insurer (BC/BS)-- but am afraid they will refuse to insure her since she’ll be in another state. Does anyone have experience with this?

9 days and D leaves on the backpacking/canoeing pre-college trip. Have that stuff all bought and just the personal things to add. When she returns, time to load the car and move her into the dorm.

I thought the dorm “hill” wasn’t too bad until we realized it did not include her clothes. Girls “need” way more stuff than boys. Told her I am making ONE minivan trip and it all has to fit.

She just finished her last state swim meet and went out with great times. (Some of you may remember she had hip surgeries 2010 and 2011, 5 months out of the pool each time.) Her coach (high school and club) had tears in his eyes as he wished her well and told her he did not know how he would manage without her leadership. So nice to see her acknowledged.

Gwen-- our insurance stuff is going to be interesting. We have an HMO and D’s school is not in their service area. She will be covered for emergency room/urgent care only. We’ll see how it goes for the 1st semester and then look at other options. We don’t really want to change coverage because she loves her main Dr as does everyone else in the family.

Bug hugs to the sweet little families where you’ve been a team of two for a long time. I’m sure that’s an even tougher journey you’re having. Get support wherever you find it-- including right here!

I’m relatively new to CC, but have enjoyed reading your posts. Younger son leaving for college in 10 days … going to same school as older son who will be a junior. Facing empty nest syndrome - both happy and sad. My prior posts have been about my older son and money concerns - now I’ve shifted my attention to my younger son and how I will miss his great sense of humor, laughter, singing in the shower, etc. (I posted this in the HS Class of 2012 thread but realize I should be here) Anyway, will try to take advantage of the support here. I know I will need it.

Hey Gwen - My son will be 14 hours away. I called BC/BS and they said it was no problem for him getting coverage/still being on our plan, plenty of in network providers. (Just have to make sure he checks that out beforehand - ie., which doc to see). Same copay and everything as instate.

I went with the latter but it’s easy to change. I just want to make sure y’all can find it in the big list!) Also, I’ve never heard of that very old university and had to look it up, it sounds quite awesome!

Uarts is well discussed in the music major thread forum for its many terrific programs. Congrats to your D, I bet you had a long winter of auditions like we did :)

Well I got motivated after posting this AM, harassed DD, and dorm mountain has begun! Actually started with a bit of a volcanic eruption of a mega trip to BBB. Ran into one of DD’s HS friends and her mom doing the same. Just for fun I will post the picture D1 took of D2 and her shopping cart on the old wackaloon flickr.

Hey MomFrom TN - I live about 30 mins south of N’ville. I thought I probably had the record for a child leaving far from home/TN (mine will be in south FL). I feel for you. But it’s a similar situation with my son - very good fit, very excited. I need to keep focused on the positive, exciting aspects as you’ve mentioned - I have been having a tough time with the impending empty nest (our only), so it’s nice to be reminded of where the focus should be - I know it intellectually, but my heart is already grieving the upcoming absence. Will just take some time to adapt.

I am so glad to have the support of the community here at CC.

weatherga - thinking of you this week. Lots of virtual hugs floating your way! xoxo

dentmom4 - very sweet of the coach to tell her that! So great about her final times, I’m sure that made her feel good to be able to do so well after all the medical recovery time.

katie93 - is SMU far from where you live? Don’t forget, I could already be parked on that campus in less than 25 minutes if need be! PM me for cell phone number if you think it’s helpful for you. Don’t forget to hit up MizzBee and others here for sorority advice if your D is interested in the Greek scene at SMU.

Lots of Wackaloon friends popping up this week… some ‘oldies’, some brand new, some out from the shadows, and some dusting off their Wackaloon spirit after some time away. Great to hear from everyone!

ohiobassmom - I don’t have an art-y kid and she gave up the bassoon in 8th grade after playing for 2.5 years, much to the dismay of her band director. I just have a regular “B” kid with no music/art/athletic talents znd no high GPA. Oh yeah, and no money for college.

I don’t hang out in the music threads and I know a bunch of those parents haven’t stumbled onto this forum yet or our offspring’s big college list would be much longer with some additional colleges represented! Would love to see ALL the colleges the CC class of HS2012 ended up at in one giant list. That would probably be an eye-opener for lots of the posters in the HS threads who assume everyone on CC is only interested in Ivies and top 20 LACs. There’s a partial ‘2012 accepted’ list but it doesn’t show all the final decisions or all the students who opted for gap years, etc.
