Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Hi all!! I am so happy to be moving over to this exciting new thread…even though I am technically a 2017 college mom. DS is over 1400 miles… past the halfway marker, and getting really close to Oregon. He is on his 3rd pair of new shoes, his DOES have a beard, and is still wearing the same shirt he has worn the whole way so far…EWWW!! His last photo actually stunned me… he looked so bad… but very happy. He has had to deal with detours, due to fire, being woken up to guns pointed at his head( the ranger looking for the people who started the fire), water issues, hot dry days, post offices that don’t have his stuff, and on and on. I guess the good news is that I won’t be stressed at all when he gets ready to launch next summer… I have already lived through much worse.

Airline story here… I think you know m y DS14 is studying Shakespeare this summer with the Stratford Shakespeare Co. in Canada. Well being the crazy parents that we apparently are, we sent him to Canada by himself not knowing that since he is only 15, to fly internationally you have to have a notarized note from us that he can travel alone. He got interrogated in customs for 2 HOURS, before they let him go. He then missed his shuttle that was to take him to the school 2 hours away. He called and handled it all amazingly, but I was a wreck. I told him just to stay in the airport overnight and the shuttle would be back in the morning… but he figured out on his own how to convince the shuttle co to put him on a bus to another closer city and then pick him up there. They did and he finally arrived at the school at around 11:00 pm… with NOTHING to eat all day. I think child protective services are going to come after me soon:-))) " ma’am where is your older son?, Ahh hiking the PCT by himself."…LOL!!

I think all I can offer for advice this next month is to trust that our kids are MUCH more resilient than we think and have faith that they will navigate this college transition by themselves if we let them. Try to encourage them to solve problems by themselves first, before we come running in with our choppers blaring… just MHO. Confidence comes along with that, and there is a lot to be said about just having that one thing in this world.

5boys - your kids are so cool!

5boys— you have problem-solvers for kids. Do you know how amazing and rare that is, esp with boys? Ask me how I know, lol.

I have not really let myself think too much about D starting school. This is where I wish wish wish she was a couple hours away, not an eighteen hour drive away. Argh.

Our school said we can start sending boxes right to the dorm as long as they arrive after Aug 20-- that’s a relief, since otherwise I was going to have a friend receive them. This is easier. They also have some kind of arrangement with BBB and we can order and send stuff to the school store instead of the local BBB. I guess I can start moving Dorm Mountain a bit.

jaylynn… maybe you could have your DD walk to SD… LOL!! Wave at ny DS on the way down.

Thanks, IJustDrive. S doesn’t need clothes for college, but his younger sister needs some for an upcoming Girl Scout trip!

Fun looking at our newly expanded list. Pretty much all the colleges S applied to are on there!!!

Big welcome to all the new posters! If you’re not able to add yourselves to the big list(s), just go ahead and post your info here and someone else will help out. I can usually get to it within 24-48 hours. (I know, I know… sad, but true!)

We’re getting very close to having Wackaloon offspring at 100 colleges!

Sent from my VM670 using CC

We already shipped one box from an online purchase to campus. Girly got assigned a mail drawer number that’s just one digit higher than our home address. So her old mom already has it easily memorized, yay!

Thanks for adding me to the list! I’ve enjoyed following your children’s journeys (and your’s) and look forward to contributing to this thread as I will have no kids at home and lots of time on my hands!

Hi 5boys! Please stick with us! Loving the PCT updates. Such resourceful kids you have!

5boys - I love your stories about your sons!

Just a word of warning to those leaving kids at school the first time. Two years ago when I left D1 in NYC to return home to SoCal we made the mistake of saying goodbye in my hotel room before I checked out. My hotel was near the dorm and she walked over on her way to the first day of orientation. We both cried and cried then she had to go to school. I caught a shuttle to the airport and wore my dark sunglasses. When I arrived at Newark I called my H and cried because I could see NYC from the airport. H told me to go to a bar and have a glass of wine and not look out the window!

This time when I leave D2 in NYC I plan to say a public goodbye to her at the dorm so we don’t have a repeat of two years ago!

Hello wackaloons.
Hoping all launches are smooth
And mostly tear-free.

Dorm Mountain isn’t too big here. I figure if he forgets something, he can tough it out for a month. He’ll be home the first weekend of October because his sister’s circus troupe has a big performance. If he forgets something too big to take back on the train, we’ll drive him back. :)

So glad to have this group to share the gamut of experiences/emotions with. I’ve gotten my smiles, laughs, and tugs at heart strings reading thru everyone’s posts.

I, too, laughed at psychmomma’s ‘dorm mountain’ reference! We’ve got one growing, too!

eyemamom and mspearl - I can relate. I doubt that I’ll make it to the car w/o tears, but will try to hold the sob in till then.

Had to go to the orthodontist’s office a couple of days ago to pick up a new retainer for DS - when getting ready to leave, they were all wishing him well, saying goodbye, were excited for him - I could feel myself getting choked up but held the flow of tears till we got in the car…

Our dinner table will go down from 3 to 2 - my son is our only…

eyemamom - love your idea about collecting move in/parent stories! Great idea (will try not to be one of them, tho it may be tough!)

Welcome soh2000, Macapella, GoIrish and StantonMom!

S is having some last minute schedule changes due to his switch back to B.M. from B.A., so buying books is on hold for now. We have the sheets and foam pad and new pillow and bathroom caddy and whatnot. Until he moves in, there’s not much else I will buy ahead. I can get stuff to him, or he can shop himself later, he’s both not far from home and in a major city.

He has his roommate assignment but the kid doesn’t seem to be on FB and the phone number given was a landline so a text was returned…guess they’ll have to email or *actually speak on the phone *:)

5boys wow your kids sound smart and brave!

The last event at D’s school for parents and kids before the kids separate to finish their orientation is a special Mass. It’s supposed to be lovely. After Mass, parents go home or-- wherever, and the students go to lunch and their program continues (Seaworld to themselves that night! Jealous!).

We’re not Catholic. I’m thinking I’ll be sobbing through Mass and it will look like I’m overcome with religous fervor. I love God but I’ll be crying for other reasons… but maybe I’ll look like the most devout Catholic EVER. Sitting next to my Jewish husband.

That made me smile, jaylynn.

Hard to believe S launches off to Haverford on 8/29 - can someone add us to the list?

I still have one at home, but S1 and I are very close, and I’m going to miss him a lot. I’ve been able to avoid the tears so far because I just try not to think about it except for the exciting part. But when he leaves, I’ll be crying like a baby! When we were shopping for dorm stuff, S was getting annoyed and crabby, so I told him to stop ruining the experience for me and get happy! LOL!

I loved the reference to the dorm mountain! It’s a mystery how that mountain will fit into the car though! Is that what they mean when they say “you can move mountains?”

I also liked the round table idea. I hadn’t thought of the empty space at the table - now I’m depressed!

Welcome, megan12. My S will be at Swarthmore.

ALREADY LAUNCHED!
