<p>Best wishes to all of you launchers. </p>

<p>S’s good friend is leaving for a long drive to the east coast and another one leaves on Tuesday, so I think it is starting to hit him that his turn is coming. It certainly is becoming more real to me. I love your comment about not being teary yet PN, I’m waiting for the tears too. </p>

<p>We’re getting ready to launch child #1 back for her senior year, so I’m trying to mix practical shopping with fun family time. S asked why I was doing so many things for D and I promised his turn was coming soon!</p>

<p>College launch successful. Turning my car toward the 1000-mile solo drive home now. </p>

<p>Leaving my girl in a phenomenal and unique place that has already embraced her with open arms and and an endless supportive spirit. </p>

<p>It is filled with the kind of caring professors, admin staff, and fellow students she has always dreamed of for her future college. She is already interacting with so many bright, unique, curious, and intellectual classmates … just the kind of people she loves spending her time with and being challenged by… and the upperclassmen aren’t even on campus yet.</p>

<p>D left Thursday for her 18 day backpack/canoe preorientation trip in the Adirondacks. H took her down for checkin, ID pic and dorm keys, parent meeting. Met the roommate and her parents (all clicked!) and moved the dorm furniture around. Less dresser space than D was anticipating, so I guess more storage bins. She was excited to go!</p>

<p>I pick her up Labor Day and take her back 2 days later for official move-in. I think we have just about everything purchased. Just need to box and load.</p>

<p>Launched…whew! All went smoothly except I still have not mastered the use of those Command picture hangers. Ruined a bunch trying to figure it out.
Our hand truck was great and saved us much waiting as we could unload farther away from the dorm. Wish we had brought a door stopper but we rigged up a bungee instead. It helps to prop the door when you are moving stuff.

<p>DS left for his pre-orientation trip today. Even though we had a good-bye barbeque last weekend, his siblings showed up for a pancake breakfast this morning and to see him off. His older sister gave him a small gift and a card to read on the plane. I’ll go out next week to help him move in, but I cried at the airport when I hugged him goodbye.</p>

<p>Finally got a few dorm pics texted to me yesterday…she looks like she’s settling in. She has a corner room on the top floor (4th) with high ceilings and big windows–we saw the space over orientation, so we knew what the dorm was like, just didn’t know which room was hers. Her roomie moves in tomorrow–she’s part of a week-long journalism program that meets before classes start on the 27th. So glad they both get to get acclimated together before everyone else comes to campus.</p>

<p>My ex had one meltdown acc to my girl, but has been pretty good otherwise. She’s been in band camp since 7:30 this morning…til 9 tonight. That’s all she’s going to be living and breathing this week. I can’t wait to see her for official move-in weekend and convocation next weekend. I’ve been hanging in knowing that’s coming.</p>

<p>My stepdaughter’s baby shower was today, texted some pics to my girl–she’s sad to miss her big sissy’s day, but so it goes!</p>

<p>I’m headed over to neighbor’s house with elderflower liqueur in a minute. She’s providing the bubbly. Empty Nest Cocktail here we come. I’ve still got six days 'til launch, but am ready to start drinking…</p>

<p>Meanwhile, I bought a bunch of charming postcards ([Sugarboo</a> Designs - Product - Postcards(Detailed)](<a href=“http://sugarboodesigns.com/product/postcards-detailed/]Sugarboo”>http://sugarboodesigns.com/product/postcards-detailed/)) today to put in the CARE PACKAGES that I will send to D at college. It hadn’t occurred to me that I would be sending care packages until D mentioned that she’d appreciate being sent her favorite locally-produced granola bars. So now I’m thinking that I’ll send one package a month, filled with things like tea and chocolate and Mountain Ocean Lotion.</p>

<p>I’m really late to this thread, but my daughter will be moving in at Barnard on August 26th.</p>

<p>Just did a “dry run”-everything fits in the car for tomorrow! S won’t have to hold stuff on this lap or anything! </p>

<p>All textbooks are in at the bookstore except for the lab manual. (They were all on back order).</p>

<p>Well, we safely launched D with only a minor snafu. We had spent the last week at her grandparents and had unloaded the car when we arrived. Somehow D, H and I all managed to forget to reload her hanging clothes for the trip to college. Not a big deal- H and I swung by grandparents on way home and picked up clothes. We spent the night to break up the 16-hour drive and headed home the next day. Clothes were UPSed to D today.</p>

<p>Being true wackaloons, instead of counting all the different license plates on the 10-hour drive home, we recorded any college identifiers on cars (bumper stickers, decals, license plate holders. We tallied 36 colleges not counting duplicates.</p>

<p>Move-in was very smooth. As a preseason athlete, she was the only one moving in on her floor. There are only 4 people in the entire dorm right now. She has decided to haul some stuff over to a teammate’s room and stay with her for preseason.</p>

<p>It was very strange waking up to the empty house this morning. I caught myself a few times expecting to hear D in her room. Grocery shopping was interesting too as I bypassed all D’s favorites. I seem to tear up at odd moments especially when I do something that we always did together.</p>

<p>Other than the campus itself the area has changed a ton since we moved away in 1994 but Morningside Heights still has a very special place in my heart :)</p>

<p>ready, that is when it’s the worst - when it catches you by surprise. I also tend to tear up when I do something that D or S would always do with me.</p>

<p>My D was the one who didn’t want to go.</p>

<p>Today she texted a bunch and says college is awesome. Gee, it took about 24 hours. :)</p>

<p>Well, my only D has been moved into her dorm (with little fuss and muss) and I survived the trip home with only a few crying spells (and a plane delayed several hours).
The day she moved in there was a family bbq that night and then she slept at the dorm for the first time and I went back to the hotel…the next morning I stopped by to go to breakfast with her before heading to the airport…in her room I noticed that the toothbrush I had put out by her sink was gone…I asked her where she had put it and she replies that she “lost” it…seriously, how do you lose a toothbrush in less than 12 hours in a 10x10 room? I offer to get out another from the bin of extra supplies I packed for her…she replies “no, it’s in my bed somewhere…I’ll find it…” ???
