<p>There was a “discussion” about cleaning our kid’s room on another thread. I was very self conscious about cleaning after the discussion, so I cleaned D2’s room behind the close door (like a closet cleaner). There were 4 buckets of dirty water. I heard someone outside of D2’s room saying, “Oh, it smells like chlorine here.” That was me. The walls were gleaming when I was finished, and the radiator was dust free. </p>

<p>I brought one of our many cyclone power vaccums to D2’s dorm. For all the nay sayers out there, I had many parents asking me if they could use the vaccum after I was done because they thought it belonged to the dorm. </p>

<p>I got an air filter fan for D2’s room, and one of those air purifier closet thing. By the time we left, her room smelled like a hotel room.</p>

<p>Checking back in! DS has two bids to fraternities and appears to be picking the dark horse candidate. Will move in to that house tomorrow (most likely) and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. It appears they are a great group of guys and they want him for himself over his GPA and resume. </p>

<p>We will probably stop by on Sunday to say hi and drop off anything that he realizes that he missed.</p>

<p>Thanks to the person who mentioned sending their child a card. I mailed one Friday before we left, with a short good luck message and Panera gift card. Also congratulated her for finding the mailbox. She received it today and texted her thanks. It was a good way to build in some contact in those first few days.</p>

<p>Had a little time, so I finally went on to check in and see how everyone is doing. As usual this thread has me laughing and crying…LOL!! I love your D’s story about the autistic child mommymommy…and Oldfort… you made me smile… as I remember being a “closet cleaner” when my oldest was in college. He wasn’t in a dorm, but I would drive up to LA and clean his apartment a few times. I just remember it being DISGUSTING… as only 2 boys can make it. I don’t know why, but it was strangely satisfying… although they could of cared less… anyway… could totally relate. </p>

<p>Mizzbee… I was worried about your DS at first… but glad to see it all worked out:-))</p>

<p>Snowflake… I will definitely be thinking of you guys on the 22nd. Please pm me all the details if you can… I am really anxious to hear how it all goes and to live vicariously by you as my DS is off hiking to the ends of the earth…LOL!! Any tips on move in will be most appreciated as well.</p>

<p>We are enjoying the last few days with DS14 before school starts for him on Wednesday. He is anxiously waiting to here about callbacks,as his HS casts the entire year of shows now. Hope it goes well for him.</p>

<p>Elle-my D also is on the third floor of McBride! She had to be there last Friday for volleyball. A very nice young man helped H carry up a couple of loads-wonder if it was your S. Does he run cross country?</p>

<p>Our move in went very smoothly and D has her room all set up.We didn’t use a hand truck. We rented a microfridge combo, and it was already in the room. D was a little nervous the first few days and beat from triple practices. Not eating much because of nerves. Seems to be much better today from the couple of texts I’ve received. D’s roomate arrives this weekend. They have been communicating on FB and I got a nice note in the mail today from her mom. Hopefully there won’t be any stories to tell (though I enjoy reading others’). We are heading back this weekend for orientation. Not really necessary, but we love to visit there and it’ll be nice to meet roommate and her family. We’re stopping at Allegheny College on our way out to help our son’s gf move into her campus housing.</p>

<p>It is nice to hear from those who have already done the move into K. Looks like it should go pretty easy for us. We also rented a micro-fridge so we don’t need to worry about lugging it up the stairs.</p>

We decided to get one sets of sheets here, so we could pre-wash them. With the towels I would be more concerned about them bleeding into the other wash than about absorbency. I know my daughter says she can do laundry, but I have my doubts…</p>

<p>Re the sheets, I kept one set (other is being picked up over there) and washed it and put it in the suitcase. We both agreed that we didn’t want laundry on a to-do list on move-in day. And, I finally gave up on buying towels and packed DS2’s college towels into the suitcases as well.</p>

<p>I hadn’t thought of buying a set of sheets here and pre-washing them. That is an excellent idea. I did put an extra day in our trip so we could handle washing. Maybe to make move-in day a little more enjoyable, we will try and do the washing on Friday in Columbus. This way we can spend some time looking around the college and the near by towns before it is time to move in on Saturday.</p>

<p>We just launched DS today 4 days ahead of schedule (please move us to the “launched” section when the list is updated next). His rugby club has camp this week, and he works out on the field for 3 hours at 7 AM, a couple hours swimming after lunch, and another couple hours at 6 PM. We moved him in at 10:45. Plenty of parking, no line for the elevators. No rush. The only other student we saw was his roommate who lives in the next town over, and who is not “allowed” to move in until Friday, but came over to meet everyone, bring his bedding, and check out the room and figure out what they still needed. He seems like a great kid, and my husband helped him wrangle his mattress and pad into the bed bug cover. H and I helped S set up his side of the room, unpack his footlockers (so they could come home with us), hang stuff up, and set up the printer and computer.
The Rugby club paid for an extra 4 nights for the rooms, but did not spring for a pre-orientation meal plan (like the marching band has), so we stocked his refrigerator, and gave him cash for his meals.<br>
His dorm is right next to a new major commercial development and we had lunch at the brand spanking new Subway. The state road that runs through campus is being made wider with new turning lanes and sidewalks to support the development. Even on campus, the contractors are busy pouring new curbs and sidewalks in the vicinity of Gampel Pavilion. Last year, S’s room would have been very noisy, because it faces the first building of the development, but that building is all finished now, and screens his dorm from the noise of the rest of the on-going construction.
The one hour drive home was a bummer because I had to take S’s car back home, and H had to drive the truck, so we couldn’t commiserate with each other until we got home. One thing I have not seen listed, which was the only thing that seemed to help my angst, was chocolate! So, be sure to bring chocolate (in a cooler if needed) so it is available for self medication on the way home!</p>

how did your son reach his decision to join a house? His school seems much different than most! Congratulations to him! and I am so glad there is one less worry for you.</p>

<p>The micro fridge rentals is an outside company but they coordinate with individual colleges.</p>

<p>Since we are talking some about laundry. I got a tip on the UR forum to buy those detergent in little packets that dissolve in the wash instead of the pouring kind. Bought it in our usual brand and we tried one. Worked fine.</p>

<p>Wabash is a little different in the timing of recruitment and how they live in houses from the start, but the recruitment part seems about the same (though I will never really understand fraternity recruitment). He visited the houses and got bids from a couple of them. He had better conversations with multiple members in both houses and thought he would fit in better with the group that he chose. It really is about figuring out who he wanted to live with for four years.</p>

<p>LOL @bubmom. I’ll have to tell my S to look your S up when it’s ice cream time. He’ll be out in ML. I was only there once my four years at the college! So I told him I’m no help telling him what the dorm is like.</p>

<p>Launched D2 this weekend. She does not jump right into things, and was teary. Today, talked to her briefly, and she seemed happier/upbeat. She is not that far away from home, and not in an unfamiliar location. Sigh of relief.</p>
