<p>Sent my D off last night (she is attending a two day Jewish student camping trip) and I will meet her at Wesleyan Wednesday morning. She made quite a picture as she walked away - a combination of jock and fashion plate - cute jeans, sweater and ballet flats, straw cowboy hat with a rose accent, Nike Track Nationals backpack, Maccabi basketball carry-on, and holding the 10 pound September issue of Vogue. Her carry-on was over-sized ( has sleeping bag and stuff for the camping trip )but at the gate AA checked it for free</p>

<p>I didn’t cry last night but this am when my BF told me D asked her to “take care of my Mom” the waterworks started. </p>

<p>ReneeD7- I hope for best the for New Orleans. It will be a great bonding experience for the class of 2016 to ride out the hurricane together. The last big quake in LA was 1994 and moms of the HS class of 2012 still bond over stories of making through while pregnant.</p>

<p>Thanks for the good thoughts bhmamacita! I remember that quake in 94 because my girl was born the next day…and my father-in-law lived in Pasadena at the time and we were worried about him! It will be quite an experience for the class of 2016! Good luck to your girl!</p>

<p>Thank you for all the move-in stories…I’ve been reading and learning from everyone’s experiences! Tomorrow is move-in day for first-year students at the LAC in our town. Even though I’ve seen it happen for 20+ years, I will see it with new eyes this time.</p>

<p>My D launches this coming Saturday, so this week is busy with good-byes, (more) shopping and packing. Our last opportunity to have a family dinner (there are just 3 of us) was this past Saturday. That didn’t make me weepy, but when D and I were discussing care packages, I had to leave the room to compose myself after she reminded me that I would not see her on her 19th birthday.</p>

<p>Thinking of everyone who is affected by Isaac…up here, we’re noting the one-year anniversary of tropical storm Irene.</p>

<p>So strange to see the “launched” group bigger than the “to be launched” group!! </p>

<p>Was at Target today buying last minute things and they were obviously gearing up for the onslaught of students coming TO our town for the U of Oregon startup in a couple of weeks. So weird to be getting ready to leave a town a bunch of kids are coming TO. Don’t think I didn’t have a pang about D going far away when she could be staying. We encouraged her to go but now I’m sad. :(</p>

<p>Somehow I forgot to mention this about D’s roomie’s mom. (She of the garment bag/flipfolder) </p>

<p>We were walking along together on campus at one point. She tells me she put some birthday-themed paper goods stuff in a bag to give to my D. The roomie’s birthday is in a month. The dad already ordered a cake to be delivered to her (a local fundraiser) and the mom & my D had discussed when we met in our town about D helping to make it festive. </p>

<p>So when we 3 parents were walking on campus, the mom tells me she has the secret stash of birthday stuff to pass to my D in a Weightwatchers bag. And if roomie is there when the mom gives it to my D, the mom said she’s gonna tell my D, “Here’s that bag of Weightwatchers stuff for your mom.”</p>

<p>Seriously?! </p>

<p>I mean, I could stand to lose some pounds but is that REALLY the only bag and ruse you could come up with??? Not even an empty M@Ry Kay bag available for use after 20+ yrs as a MK dealer? It can only be handed over in a weightwatchers bag with my name attached?</p>

<p>Do you think she’s actually just trying to tell me something?</p>

<p>Woody, don’t you think that ruse would fall flat? After all, your D will know that you’re not interested in WW, and is likely to say something. (The good news is that the parents go home soon.) </p>

<p>I’m happy to say that all of D’s suite-mates are lovely, and none of the parents inappropriate. At least from what I could tell. Of course, they may be saying things about me. . . .</p>

<p>PN - my son also played yours in chess and got his a$$ handed to him. He said your son gave him 9 minutes to his 1 and he still killed him. lol my son knows how to play, he’s not played in years.</p>

<p>Good news on my front and I can now officially breathe. He called after talking to his advisor and he is over the moon happy. He’s so excited about his classes - really likes his advisor who suggested he take calc 171q, an honors calc, which he is, along with his required writing, digital music engineering class and a music theory class. He was told if he didn’t take music theory now, he wouldn’t have time til next year and he wouldn’t have enough time to do a minor. He’s making friends, calming down and just so so excited about everything there. Hubby kept asking me what I was waiting for to hear from him - and today was it. He also mentioned how great it is that the other kids are so smart that they just get each other and their jokes. He’s registering as we speak, feels well supported to figure it out. And in what makes me feel better - he eats dinner with other kids.</p>

<p>So you all know how good I felt about it - I told him he could call us any time, day or night if he needed or wanted to, but otherwise we’d appreciate a weekly call sometime over the weekend. He said he was busy - he’d check his schedule and text when a good time would be to talk - lol. I was so happy talking to him that of course I cried afterwards - my last crying over all of this.</p>

<p>eyemamom - I’m so glad to hear the latest report! The 171 Calc class is a really cool class, and both teachers teaching it this year are awesome. And they make it really easy for kids to switch to the 161 level class if they discover they don’t enjoy the approach of the 171 course. So…I approve! <p>Son is settled in now. I’m hoping he will tell me about the job fair being held today, along with the “official” registering of classes taking place today. House was so quiet after arriving back home on Saturday. I keep reminding him of things and he keeps telling me I am making him nervous so I have resigned myself to sit in the corner and mind my own business. <p>Popping in just for a moment to say: IT’S DRIVING ME INSANE THAT I DON’T NECESSARILY GET TO HEAR HOW D’s FIRST DAY OF CLASSES WENT/IS GOING. One thing we managed to do right as a family is eat dinner together most nights of her life. Such a void. I’m crying again…</p>

<p>I love all the launch stories. And I am learning so much…like I will never play chess with PN’s son.</p>

<p>We did a two day launch. Wednesday 22nd was his (1 day early) move in day and music conservatory orientation. We were told to arrive between 8 and 11 and we showed up around 10:30. A group of music students descended on the car, carried our stuff up to the dorm room and that was it - one trip. Nice to be there before the rest of the frosh class.</p>

<p>S’ room is a large single, 12 x 17. A large double wardrobe/dresser/storage unit fills one wall, there is a window the entire length of the 12’ side, two desks, two beds. No need to loft or even raise, because once we unpacked he still had empty drawers and closets and storage bins. I suspect this is a boy thing, but it was nice and I’m glad i didn’t buy drawers or any other storage.</p>

<p>Roomie (henceforth “R”) didn’t arrive until around 12:30 and S knew he wouldn’t, so S chose a side when we got there. One bed was by the window, one by the door, otherwise the same. </p>

<p>R arrived with his dad who announced he could only stay an hour. Dad was a bit of a character but fine. We helped them carry stuff up since they arrived after the helpers had left. </p>

<p>R was like a clone of S. Same height, same style, similar musical instruments and gear. They’re on a hall of music guys which is a good thing since everyone has amps and stuff…it’s not going to be a very quiet hall, I don’t think.</p>

<p>Once they were set up we went to some official stuff. S met the registrar and she got an advisor to come meet him and help him finish up his schedule (he had some last minute changes). </p>

<p>I was scheduled to be on campus through a dinner that night but on a break I went to the bookstore. Came back and S, R and another kid were deep in animated conversation and I decided my presence was superfluous. I said goodbye and left.</p>

<p>The next day, Thursday the 23rd, I waited for D’15 to finish school and we went together. She enjoyed seeing the campus and dorm (she hadn’t yet, move in was her first day of school). We attended some ritual stuff - all the frosh walk through the main gate (at graduation they walk out) and attended convocation. </p>

<p>We all ate dinner together and hung out for a little while, then said our goodbyes. S and R were obviously getting along great, which was a huge “WHEW” for me. Orientation stuff went on all weekend. Classes began today. I did speak to S today about books being delivered, and we’ve had a text or two.</p>

<p>I am feeling really good about it all. Fingers crossed he continues the adjustment successfully.</p>

<p>I was going to suggest Planned Parenthood (the condom sampler gift bag, maybe) but now I’m doing the “we’re not worthy” from Wayne’s World in the general direction of suzy100. I’m also frustrated that there’s an emoticon for this on another board I visit during football season, but here? ohhhhh nooooooo (hear John Belushi).</p>
