Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Hawkeye we are looking forward to spending some time in DC ourselves. Enjoyed it years ago myself at GWU for grad school.

Hi everyone. Thanks PN for setting this up. Woody, I vote for keeping the lists together until everyone is launched. Then we can drop the launching info and go back to just a where are they one.

We’ve been on vacation in DC and Williamsburg for about 10 days and heading home tomorrow. Had a wonderful time. D was dreading it in a way since she has so little time before leaving and really wanted to stay home, but it has turned out to be fun and she hasn’t complained at all. She’s our only - so it’s nice to have this time with her before she leaves. I can definitely say that DC has so much to offer - we spent 3 whirlwind tour days there and could have spent a week or more easily. Same with Williamsburg area. We never got out of the immediate area - went to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Busch Gardens and today a water park.

No dorm mountain yet for us, and D doesn’t know Roommate or dorm info - PMA has promised it by Monday noon, so she’s looking forward to knowing that and then we’ll do shopping. It will be really quiet at our house - and I guess I’m in denial until then. We’ll be driving down to CA from Oregon - then H and I will be taking a weeklong vacation on the way home. I should be done crying by then. She didn’t get the sea kayaking outdoor adventure, so I won’t have to worry about her being eaten by a shark - although Mtn Biking and rock climbing has it’s own challenges. I’ll insist on texts at least when she returns safely.

I loved catching up on this board - haven’t had a chance to read for a week or so since I’ve been on this trip. I’m feeling pretty annoyed at those airport stories. One time recently we were treated well by an airline in Minnesota (they are so nice there). Our flight was long delayed and we would have missed our connection - but United put us on Delta that had a nonstop flight leaving soon rather than rerouting us. I know it saved them the hotel - but still - was nice.

I made my last college-prep trip to BBB on this side of the country. While it’s great they have the shop and pick up option, each time I’ve gone in it seems to take about 40 minutes for them to register us. The system isn’t great. So we spent about 90 minutes only to register for a surge protector, wall mounters and a desk lamp, all of which I could have gotten over there in a fraction of the time. Ordered a duvet online tonight and bought a new backpack today. Also, we are transferring stuff to the new computer now. Got a perky robo-call from DS’s high school cheerfully announcing registration and the beginning of the school year. Do they think he’s coming back?

That’s funny, mimk6, we got the same thing, along with a test of the school’s emergency broadcast messages. Guess if it happens after registration I will remind them that he won’t be back.

I know we’re seeing this a lot lately but it needed a couple of spelling fixes! Everyone who’s asked so far is on our list. Plenty of room for more… we can all scootch over a bit!

We’re at 101 colleges for our offspring!

I’m a Los Angeles girl at heart so I just like using the name “FSU College of Motion Picture Arts” regarding StantonMom’s S attending FSU film school. I think it’s a cool college name and reminds us that we have such a wide diversity of kids! Wasn’t there one other kid considering film school in our bunch?

Wow, the early August launches are just days away. It’s all happening!!!

Remember we bought Twin XL sheets but then realized D’s online dorm info said she was assigned the dorm with Twin size beds?

Well, D called her dorm’s area director yesterday after receiving a “call me with any questions!” email. D had a question about her specific room and decided to confirm the bed size too. The dorm AD went to go look inside that room and as it turns out, the beds in that room are both Twin XL and not Twin as the dorm web site says. Yikes! Good thing D checked and I’m glad we already have the correct size sheets on hand after all! D passed the bed info to her roomiie before she even told me so that was nice.

Was also told that particular room has “captain’s shelves” so the beds can’t be lofted. She doesn’t want hers lofted up high, just raised up from the floor 2-3 feet for extra storage space. She was told the rooms in her dorm are a bit bigger than in the other dorm buildings. Plus, she and her roomie got the only room on their floor with a tiny corner nook and an extra window. Except for the men’s toilets flushing on the other side of their closet wall, they maybe ended up with one of the better rooms in their building.

Count me amongst those whose kids is trying to squeeze in more friend time than family time.

I have to admire those packing, we’re still in shopping mode. Yesterday I wrote the list of what we still needed and broke it down into Staples and other. We just decided he better bring winter clothes with him, he could very well be in shock come October when it isn’t 80 something degrees.

My other child leaves for camp Sunday so there are really only 3 or 4 days total left that we’ll all be together.

Oldfort - it’s a bummer about the containers. Hopefully you poked holes in the containers for all the illegals and exotic animals you’re sneaking in  I’m sure you won’t feel fully settled til all your stuff finally arrives.

Sympathy to oldfort about the containers. I’ve been there (or my parents have, really). Back in the 1960s my family relocated to the UK for a year for my dad’s sabbatical. We left the UK in September, and my mom had packed some crates for shipping. Home at that time was New Zealand, so to us the UK had amazing shopping. Mom packed Christmas presents for all the extended family and a lot of extra clothing and additional items we’d accumulated during our year in the UK. Our stuff got caught up in what became a protracted dock workers’ strike and didn’t end up leaving the UK until the New Year. So much for Christmas… Hope your wait is not so long!

Good morning all! The countdown to launch has definitely begun for me (21) but DS seems unaffected. I think he is in deep denial and am not sure if I should badger him to listen to the posted precollege webinars and do the precollege orientation online manuals so he can “hit the ground running” OR allow him to do no prep and get to college woefully clueless (whereas it appears many other freshman will already have their classes picked out )??? Not sure if the life lesson (that if he doesnt educate himself he will be feeling completely lost and alone and unprepared) is worth the cost (he may not transition well or at all…)??

Happy weekend everyone! I just ordered an insurance card for DS to take to school with him. Thought he should have his own card to carry with him in case he needs it for whatever reason. Thought others might want to do the same.

Trying to gather the troops to clean out the garage today. Yeah, let’s see how it goes!

Sat AM ramble follows:
Today I’m going to carry a suitcase to the brick & mortar Eddie Bauer store because my daughter saw a bag on line that she loved. Once it got here she hated it and I’m not paying to ship it back. We’ve been looking for luggage since May!

We had a trip to the Outer Banks 2 weeks ago which was lovely; she and I went for walks every AM and talked about everything. Since we’ve been back I’ve barely spent an 1 hour in her presence – she’s fitting in every last second of time with her friends.

UNC has a wacky class registration process. She ended up with classes she didn’t want during orientation as she just had to pick something to get to the min credit level and was supposed to start trying to swap out 8/1 at 10a. She’s done nothing.

I could go on. Hasn’t picked up license, set up bank acct, etc. I’m an uber planner and she just has seemed to shut down. She’s really resistant to my trying to get her to do things on her own (guess I waited too late) It reminds me of when she was 2 and decided “I baby now” and went back into pullups when her new brother arrived. Luckily she has the bare essentials; bedding, lamp, cosmetics and too many clothes and shoes. Everything else can wait.

So while I’m very frustrated with her, I’m alternatively bursting into tears at odd moments when I think of packing her up to leave in 2 weeks. The dental hygienist had to wipe my face at my cleaning yesterday! I feel like I’m going bonkers!

Guess I’ll get ready to go to the mall. grumble grumble. Oh yeah… she can’t go because she has a pool party this afternoon ;)

Thanks for listening. ~Sharon

I posted the following during a bout of insomnia last night on our old thread:

And now…I think we should collectively invent “The Empty Nest” cocktail recipe. I’m thinking it should obviously be bitter and sweet. Any ingredients suggestions?

I have just received the message loud and clear. My son did not sleep at all last night. He doesn’t think it’s college because he pushes that out of his mind. We talked about anxiety showing itself up at sleep time.

No matter how I feel - I must be the cheerleader with the confidence for two!

Son left this morning with best friend (only child in his family) for 4 day trip to Maine. He returns on Tuesday and then has one week until launch day! We finished shopping for clothes, etc. last week and made a trip to bank to open savings acct. to transfer funds from. He has been very patient with my requests and we seem to have done everything except for packing. Says he will just throw everything in garbage bags. Tell me, why did we buy that nice Bean duffle for?

Go eyemamom :)

We keep whittling at the list of things to do. Yesterday my DH and son opened a bank account at Chase, which is the ATM brand on campus. Tomorrow is my son’s grad/going away party. The other day, son and I ordered a 5 x 7 rug to go on the floor of his dorm room since we know all the rooms have just tile. Slow but sure we creep towards the move but I think it is less stressful this way for both him and us.

So today was suppossed to be the day to do the major shopping for clothes and dorm stuff - UHG, it’s 11:40 EST and DS is still sleeping. Well he’s got 20 minutes to wake up on his own or be abrutly woken up!!!

Mommymommy, that post was sweet. As for the cocktail, I found one online called, well, a Bittersweet Cocktail. It calls for:
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz dry vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters

I suggest a splash of cranberry to give it a rosy glow. :)

Thanks, suzy100. Looks like a tequila company came up with an Empty Nester recipe as well:
http://www.barnonedrinks.com/drinks/s/sauza-empty-nester-14693.html

You all just gave me a great idea for our annual moms’ fall brunch. I will be hosting it this year. Most of us are launching our kids is year so I think I’ll do either the empty nest or “almost empty nest” theme. I might even make it a dinner so I can serve cocktails!! ;)

D is car shopping w/DH this morning. He woke up one day last weEk and declared that D needed a car. We had already decided that she wouldn’t but after talking to her college coach, we realized it would be difficult for her to rely on other teammates to get to practice. Ugh, I don’t like last minute changes.

Last week was her going away party. It was a wonderful gathering of all who had supported her through the years. We have such a great group of friends and family. I wish we could get together more often. DH made a slideshow that made her cringe in embarrassment. She appreciated it, though.

Whoa, I don’t check in for a day and there are 10 pages of posts! Amazing and wonderful.
Welcome to the newbies and lurkers.

Yes, indeedy, we have a dorm mountain here. Today is the 2 week mark until I start the road trip with S to school. S is doing a great job of balancing friend and family time. He was invited to a camp out next week by people he is acquaintances with but not really good friends with. I mentioned that he might want to think about who it is he really wants to spend his last weekend in town with (I didn’t say he couldn’t go)…his closer friends and family or the people going on this camping trip. He decided to stay in town and not go. I was impressed, and thought it a fairly mature decision.

I don’t know if I am in denial, but I am feeling pretty excited about him going off. I absolutely will miss him, though. I am grateful to know I will still have younger S around.
