Are your launched daughters ignoring you or is it just the launched sons? :(

No, my launched DD is ignoring the family quite well. I have random texts from her and one very brief phone call. Today I asked her to please call her father (he was not with us on move in day). She said she has been so busy. Yes, shopping with friends for the last two days. Classes don’t start for her until Thursday. I assume then she will have time to reach out and touch her family. Maybe…DH said are you surprised she is not calling? He is not.

Did find out through FB (because girls love to post pics and statuses) that she joined her dorm dance team and the Salsa club. DD is majoring in dance. All through HS she was never able to join sports or activities due to a heavy schedule of dancing with a ballet company an hour away. So she gets to college, and the EC’s she signs up for? Dance related. I guess at least I know she is doing what she loves.

Ofc, she has been keeping in close contact with her hometown BF. She knew I had PM’d his mother to let her know that we made it through move in ok.

We just shipped off the first box of “forgotten stuff” to D2. A friend is going up there in 2 weeks, and she is going bring up more stuff for D2.

Happy to report that she is doing well. Last week she was kind of overwhelmed by amount of work, but this week she got some positive feedback on a paper she turned in and feel she is caught up on her school work.

D2 told me that her econ TA seem kind of clueless. She said to me, “I am the one who is suppose to be confused, not her. I am going to ask the professor to assign me to a different TA who is more on the ball (of course, I would say it in the nicest way).”

Thoughts to those in New Orleans.

I rode out Hurricane Jeanne in Tampa, FL back in 2004. I think it was a CAT 2 when it hit Florida’s east coast, and then quickly deteriorated and by the time it got to Tampa it was a border line “1” The most memorable thing for me is; it just seemed to go on and on and on. In the Midwest, we get our fair share of severe weather, but it moves on 1 to 2 hours, max… - Jeanne was like a 48 hour continuous thunderstorm - the monotony of the constant pounding was what drove me nuts.

Never felt threatened. Just trapped. Bleck!

@ Mamaof1-“Are your launched daughters ignoring you or is it just the launched sons?”

I am just trying to really remember that my one and only has had a total upheaval in his entire world-new place to live, sleep, shower, eat, bathroom, roommates (what fun for an only child), teachers, classes, new people everywhere, new decisions to be made daily. Leaving behind favorite pet, favorite mom (had me all to himself and all of my attention), HS for 4 years where he could go thru it with his eyes closed, a lot of he teachers he had twice (due to class selections he made). EVERYTHING is new for him. Plus the first couple of days they had so many things planned for him-he has got to be exhausted and on overload.

But on the bright side-I like you broke down and texted him tonight. All contact I have had with him has been positive. He just has a whole new world to figure out and he does have responsibilities he needs to live up to. Like the whole reason he is there in the first place.

He contacted me the first couple of days, but as of late I have been initiating it. BUT he does reply and that I am grateful for. Funny-he has been gone 9 days and I feel like it has been 9 months!

It helps me to remember that one of our guidance counselors at school has a son who just left to teach in Turkey for a year. He is only a few years older than our boys. Makes me feel a whole lot better. :-)

Hang in there! I say-if it makes you feel better-contact him. No sense in you being more stressed out in an already stressful situation. In fact-he may be so busy and want to contact you, but when he has time. My S stated time and privacy are hard to come by. He may appreciate hearing from you-short and sweet though. They are boys afterall.

my son has called home for short little conversations today - I think with what happened on campus he just needed to connect with us and hear our voices. He said everyone feels so sad but that there are plenty of people and places to help you deal with your feelings. It also gave everyone an instant common bond - he has been texting my older d throughout - she did not come to move in or convocation because she had work. and the things he shares with her are very different than what he tells me. He is rather shy and quiet but really has been trying out all aspects of college life and feels really connected to some of his classmates already! tonight he told his sister that his friends are taking him ‘clubbing’ - another first for him!! and tomorrow he is going to a meeting for a club sport that he has never tried before but has interested him…I am amazed at his bravery.
I think he also meets with his advisor tomorrow - he was interested in so many different classes so curious as to what she suggests he focus on this first semester. I do not anticipate that I will hear from him this frequently once things settle down - but I do not mind getting this little peak into his new world

Good to hear, Oldfort! When will she know about a sorority? Do first year students join Greek organizations in the first semester at her college?

The rush starts after the winter break. For anyone who is interested in rush, they go back to the school a week early. It gives them a chance to make friends first semester and decide if they want to join. There are a lot of fraternity parties fall semester, which is open to everyone, but in the spring there will just be mixers.

For the later launchers who may have slow-packing students in their house… there’s an iPhone/iPad app called “College Packing List” that’s available for free right now. There are also a couple of similar paid apponooe Android or iPhone/iPad. (most are 99 cents) Maybe if it’s in a cell phone app, they’ll be more interested in working on their packing list. :)

Skyped briefly with D1 this afternoon. A letter arrived for her from her summer internship, and I needed to know what she wanted me to do with it. She told me to just go ahead open it. Turns out it was just informational/retirement plan stuff, nothing that needs her attention.

While we were on Skype an email arrived from the music department. She had auditioned for Symphony Orchestra, and was expecting to hear today. She was nervous about opening the email, but I encouraged her to go ahead. Alas, she didn’t make it in. There are other groups she can join – chamber groups that are more low-key/recreational and less-demanding than the main orchestra, which is an official music majors’ class. This is probably for the best, but it’s hard to see that through the disappointment just now.

Her roommate was due back from late-afternoon class and they’d made plans to go to dinner together. Roommate is very sweet, and I trust she will be appropriately sympathetic and supportive.

In happier news, D2 finished the last of the official HS summer HW this evening. She has a bunch of other work to do for ECs, but at least the schoolwork is D-O-N-E!

It’s just so nice to read so many similar stories of what we’re going through from the launches to the “to call or not to call” and worries of adjustments - we even mailed a box of forgotten items. His job now is to find the on campus post office.

How’s this for psycho? One of his bank accounts is linked to mine - he’s just using it for his book purchases. The plan is to reimburse him when we see it go through the bank. Classes start tomorrow and I can see he still hasn’t bought his books. What is he waiting for? lol

If any of you saw the movie 50/50 - my favorite line from the mom - I smother because I love.

Ditto what eyemamom wrote above me. I am so grateful to be able to read everyone’s stories since they either echo or contrast my own…we are all in the same boat here. I am learning to modulate myself a bit too by reading ow everyone else has dealt with this.

The boys are different than the girls though. My sons first communication with me post launch was a photo message of a large plate of breakfast food (eggs, toast, hash browns) taken at 11:30 pm. He is very thin (5’10/130 lb) and he knows that I worry that he doesn’t eat enough ( he doesn’t…). The text was a nice statement with two meanings. Yes, mom I am eating AND cool, I can get breakfast at 11:30pm here!!!

Got a text message this am timed from after midnight last night. He was able to swap classes into Spanish, which he really wanted and classes start this am. He is handling himself. I can breathe now.

So sad to hear about the Columbia student!

Do I get points for this? My D’s iPhone broke the day before she launched which totally sent her into a panic that she would be out of touch with all of the people that she met at cheer camp and her coach. When she did her insurance claim she didnt think to have her new phone sent to her new address at school - not exactly sure why! Soooooo two days after launch I made the 2 1/2 hour drive to Towson to deliver her phone to her. Only saw her for about five minutes but it was nice!

Her classes start today - she got her schedule fixed yesterday so that it doesn’t conflict with cheer practice. She called last night and said that she was already in bed because she had an 8 am class - made me happy to hear that! She did not get any books yet but said she would do that today - I don’t know why she didnt do that yesterday but I am trying not to worry about it and trust that she will figure it out.

I took my 15 year old S3 shopping yesterday for school supplies and clothes. We went to 4 stores and were done in 3 hours. He was on a mission and couldnt wait to get it over with - I really missed my daughter yesterday!

Karen

D’s last summer paycheck arrived in the mail, which I’d agreed to deposit for her, but I didn’t have her account number, so I, you know had to email her…and couldn’t resist asking how her classes were going.

She indulged me with a chatty response. Her Intro to Environmental Studies professor and lab TA are “SO KICK A**” Other classes not as great, but still fine. The only one she’s nervous about is Spanish, so she’s decided to get a peer tutor. I looked up the favored professor and, really, if my D had made a “vision board” of what she wanted in a mentor, this woman is it. I feel so grateful and excited that she’s connected with her right out of the gate.

Glad to read so many happy launch stories. Ours went well also. Just got a text from S asking if I thought there would be towels at the pool (he was off to take the swim test).

My heart goes out to the family of the Columbia student as well as the university community.

D2 sent us a message photo of a plate of dim sum from her dining hall. “This will have to do for now.” (dumplings, pork buns) I knew there was a good reason why she picked that school.

So sad to hear about the Columbia student. :(

Oldfort, my D would do anything for dimsum and pork buns at her school! I think my next care package may include a mini rice cooker. :)

All these posts! I don’t visit everyday so it is hard to keep up. We are a chatty bunch for sure. My daughter has been keeping her distance - has called me once and it was yesterday but only in response to a text. It wasnt a stalking text I promise, just needed banking info.

She is overwhelmed with the amount of homework. Says she isn’t intimidated by the content, just all the work. Welcome to college.

We are picking her, boyfriend and another local friend up on Saturday after the Buckeyes home game. Another parent will take them back on Monday night. I have mixed feelings about her coming home so soon but my aunt is having a large family party that was supposed to happen before she left and she really wants to see her cousins and grandparents. I guess that is a benefit of being relatively close.

Been very quiet at our house lately. Just me and D2. Husband traveling all over country lately…

Launched yesterday - hope it went well! rerunagain, chemusic

Launching today - congratulations downtoearth, megan12, tozubri, bhmamacita!
