mihcal1 – Sorry to hear about your D’s audition results. The jump from high school to college exposes kids to peers who are willing to take up residence in practice rooms and I suspect both our kids wanted more balance in their lives.

seiclan – Not at all surprised at your S’s first communication. Good to see a man with his priorities straight. :)

D came in from her first day of seventh grade and plopped her all-region music in my lap and it occurred to me why I haven’t had some of the emotional reactions some of you have reported. My “routine” has only been changed just a little: different kid, different instrument, different teacher (different exits off the same freeway, though) but that’s about it. Now when she goes …

Re: communication. D has been at school for a week now and we’ve texted, called and skyped her for various reasons. I suggested to DH that we should back off and let her initiate more of the communication now. I love the picture texting because it allows us to check in without “intruding”. Yesterday, I texted D a pic of our dog wearing a birthday hat for her birthday. She loved it.

S’14 left for his junior year yesterday and he communicates maybe once a week by text. His boss this summer is an acquaintance and told me last week, “Your S is a man of few words but when he speaks, it’s relevant and something you want to hear.” :)

eyemamom-It might not be a bad idea to wait until classes start before purchasing books. Several upperclassmen told my son to wait until classes started-and he saved a bunch of money. Many of the profs told the classes that they didn’t need to purchase the “package” of material that would be listed at the bookstore-in fact, a few profs gave the kids links to webstores where they could purchase an e-book, in some cases for 60% savings!! He was really glad he waited-he saved over $300 on books. Maybe your son has been given similar advice.

My D has also been a bit overwhelmed by homework (mostly reading) this week. She is still very homesick so I am thankful that her sister is just 5 subway stops away. D’s roommate and the two other girls in her apartment are all going home this weekend (they all live close) which I know has made her even more homesick. She said she was going to work out a lot this weekend and get all her homework done for her marketing class that has all the reading. D1 said she will make sure to spend lots of time with D2 this weekend.

hsmom2dncrs, I think it depends on the class for book purchases. My son’s chem teacher has the first homework already up on his home page and classes don’t even start until tomorrow.

The professor also indicated he wanted to use the latest edition which had some online features. He stated that students could use older editions but that it was entirely on them to find the info they were missing. I told my son to just buy the new book in the bookstore as no one else even has it.

eyemamom, maybe your kid is paying cash (or even checks) for used books from upperclassmen? My kid texted that he was getting 2 books for $50 from a sophomore. Good deal if they are the right books (I know he knows about that Chem book Lakemom, but I think he just bought the old edition anyway.) Oh well, his problem and $50 is a relatively cheap lesson. And, as at least ONE other UR mom knows, he can use Wikipedia instead of the Bio text as long as he lets the prof study the results

PNWedwonk, I don’t disagree with you, that book is very expensive but I asked the bookstore about selling it back to them. They indicated they buy them back for half the price of the new one so he will get a chunk of the cost back.

Lakemom, I think your kid has the right strategy. I’m biting my tongue (or actually sitting on my texting fingers!) because I think S should just break down and pay up the $279 for the latest edition. Maybe partway through the semester someone will drop out and he can get it at a reduced rate?!

PNWedwonk, the textbook lady in the bookstore is very sharp. She knows all the books for all the classes and professor preferences. The bookstore won’t buy the book back until the spring. They do not want to store books for a semester, they want you to hold them.

You might suggest to your son that it is okay, on this one book, to go for it new. He can still probably sell his used copy of edition 6 to another student. I don’t believe the other 2 sections wanted the 7th edition.

And on a lighter note, both our boys must be in chem together :)

With Chem, we bought the old book quite inexpensively and there was a place he could buy online access for $130 if I recall correctly (saw it online). I’ll need to find it when I get home. It’s still far less expensive than the new book + online access - plus they won’t get reimbursed for the online part when they sell the book back if it’s an access code that will have been used.

I told my guy to wait and see if he needed the online part. It sounds like he will. He’s doing the 24 hour Play Festival stuff right now (just read an e-mail from him) so I’ll connect with him about it soon.

I think I might win for most contact from a male who isn’t homesick - he’s just sharing his life. I’ll admit to loving it. Oldest hardly ever contacted us at all after we dropped him off. He still doesn’t.

I can’t fathom what the parents of the freshman at Columbia are going through - way too sad.

Dare my budget get a whiff of hope? I doubt it… both the new and old editions came up on the bookstore website. Do they do that for all sections? I’m at school now (on prep) and can’t look up those sorts of things (well, I could IF I remember what section he had signed up for, but…).

Good point about the online access Creekland. I actually don’t know how that works when it is sold back. Perhaps the bookstore is able to do something since they are a bookstore. The section that wanted edition 7 is Holland’s. (MWF)

The other section with Krugh? was flexible, didn’t look up the other guy with a “H” in his name.

Holland’s syllabus is what said about it being up to the student to find what they needed if they did not use edition 7. Kind of lousy actually but I figured we would just kick for it.

Creekland, if you know your son’s password you can look up his schedule in the blackboard.

On the bookstore site for Chem it says an Iclicker Screen is required. Is that better purchased or rented? Will they likely use it for more than one class? I’m leaning toward buying wondering if it’s the wave of the future. Do other schools use these?

It also makes me think he will need online access… but time will tell. It says both editions of the book are required - that can’t be true.

Mine is in the same class as Creekland’s. Maybe S actually knows what he’s doing and just saved himself a bundle? I know he is smart, just not quite sure how smart he is! I think I’m already over the limit for mom initiated texts this week, so will just have to hope!
