Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Make us proud CPU!

After D forwarded an email about her student loan to me asking “What is this and do I need to do anything?”, I answered her and asked her to call when she got a chance and gave her a list of things I’d been wondering about. She called today when I was at work and we had a good talk. Things are much better than they were that first night. She misses air conditioning but said everybody without it is hanging out in the lounge in the dorm that has it (just a little way down the hall from her room) and it has been a good way to get to know people. She has met some great young women and met her adviser who is “really great.” She had a list of things she wants me to ship. She and her roommate are getting along well and are hanging out with her roommates best friend from high school and her roommate a lot. She likes them all a lot. She walked into her room while her roommate was Skyping with a friend and heard her saying “My roommate is really nice” so she felt really good about that. I told her I heard about the girl from Columbia and asked if everybody was really freaked out about that and she said not really. It was mentioned a few times, but they aren’t dwelling on it or anything. She said so far, the food is really good. She did say she feels really alone sometimes, but she knows that feeling will go away. She made one interesting observation “Everybody here is SO different.” I asked whether she meant different than she is or different from each other and she said “Different from me and from anybody I’ve ever met before.” I said that sounded kind of cool and she said it was.

I believe she is pretty successfully launched and I feel better about it all now.

I had to go to my son’s tennis team parent meeting at the high school and a few parents I know asked if my D had left yet and I got teary. It was weird being in the school and knowing she wouldn’t be there. The tennis coach was one of her favorite teachers and wrote one of her recommendation letters so that didn’t help either. But, I do feel much better since she called and we talked and she sounded like her bubbly normal self again.

Phew. What a week it has been.

I’m not sure, but I let youngest stalk FB for us and clue us in when there are new pics or important info. ;)

Awesome! I think one of the best things about college (besides the academics) is when kids step out and start experiencing something new.

I hadn’t thought about checking for these. Hmm…

I hope all our Isaac kids + any parents are doing well.

In Maryland, finishing up our “family vacation” before we drop S2 off at Loyola. We have been finishing up “loose” ends, taking care of some small stuff, but are relatively ready to get him moved in tomorrow morning. We go to BB&B today to pick up the rest of his stuff that we ordered while still at home in San Diego. I am sure his roomies will think he has forgotten NOTHING! That’s the goal when I’m sending my son across the country, for me to rest easy. To each his own. The FAC has been closed, so we have been taking him to swim to another facility each day. We work that in first thing, then go off to see sites. An interesting perk to him coming to Loyola, we have family here he has never met, and I introduced him to them last night. Six cousins, all with kids, who all told him if he needed anything, to call. That was heartwarming. I have not seen most of them for 30 years, so it was lovely to reconnect and very comforting to know they will be watching out for him. He will not come home to SD for Thanksgiving, so he will get to experience the holidays with this extended fam, and I’m grateful. S has a couple of friends attending JHU, so we are all going out to dinner tonight, and having them close by will be great, too. I think he is ready. Saying goodbye will be the hardest part, I know. I’m not thinking about that for another day and a half, cherishing every moment!!! Good luck to all. It’s been fun to read the launch stories.

feel like I haven’t been here in forever! So much launching!!! Seems like most are happy

D is launched as of Monday and super in LOVE LOVE LOVE with W and her roomie!!! Happy mom!!!

Returned from launching S and D over a week ago. It took me over a day to catch up on all the postings! Glad to hear that most move-in’s went well (some with a few hiccups).
Hope that everyone in the path of the hurricane stays safe and is able to return to their dorms and homes soon.

Son’s move-in went well. After driving 13 hours we arrived at dorm for early move in. Were able to bring everything in with 2 trips. We went for a quick dinner and returned to hotel for the night. Next morning we went to BBB to pick up order and then onto Target for bathroom items, laundry and school supplies. We set up his room in less than and hour and then walked around campus a bit. S wanted to return to hotel to chill for a few hours then we grabbed an early dinner. I dropped him off at dorm for a floor meeting and returned to hotel for the evening. The next morning we met for breakfast and shopped for
t-shirts for his D and S. I drove him back to dorm and we said goodbye (no tears from me). He seemed very at ease and happy to be there so it wasn’t hard saying goodbye.

Drove 3 1/2 hours to D’s college and stayed overnight with friends. The next morning I drove to Chicago to pick up H and D at airport. We stopped for “Chicago pizza” and then headed to daughter’s school. We were planning on moving D into off campus housing that day but apartment was not cleaned properly and the carpets were still wet. We shopped for items that day and moved in the following day. Move-in was more involved than son’s!

We enjoyed a nice dinner with D’s roommates and parents that evening and helped them finish setting up their rooms. Before leaving the next morning we went for breakfast with D and walked around campus. D is a senior and is excited but bittersweet about starting her last year. We left by 12:30 for the 11 hour drive home. Within the first hour H was pulled over for speeding. We were driving in the right lane and being passed by other cars in the left - just our luck! The ride went well until we hit traffic after dinner. We sat for three hours and finally got off highway. There was a tractor trailer accident that had closed the highway several hours before. We finally arrived home at 3:30 am.

Have heard from S several times (I texted him first) and spoke to him twice. He seems to be doing well and likes his classes. So far so good! The house is very quiet and I’ve been trying to keep busy before I return to work next week. Sorry this post is so long!

Just checking in here. DH and I are at the airport getting ready to board a flight back to the summer place for a few weeks of r and r. The nest is empty so why not? Just trying to work out how to send DS a care package from there and what to send? He called me (yes, really!) yesterday on his way to the bookstore to go buy his textbooks asking if he should get new, used, or rent. Rent? Wow, that is new. I told him he can decide that for himself based upon the subject matter (and whether he feels he would want to hold onto any of those books. Wish they had that option a few years ago for my girls…

D has been very good about keeping us informed via texts & an email. Everything very positive, even loves her bed. Has met another violinist planning to audition for Columbia orchestra. Also has met several girls taking same biology course, including a roommate.

Got an unsolicited phone call last night! All seems well in her world and class starts today.

There are 2 other Oliners (besides my D) who are auditioning for the Babson Dance Ensemble. Auditions are in 1.5 weeks. Good luck to them!

psychmomma - did you buy csi or nssi insurance for D? We luckily did and D dropped her ipod on the first day of the policy… I she handling the claim form with our help, I don’t think she has sent all requested info yet. Even if you didn’t, the policy is not much money and you might want to look into it…

I am really needing to hear my girl’s voice. Got a text early yesterday morning that her phone was dying and she didn’t know when she’d be able to charge it again. Hopefully today. I’m not concerned with her safety at this point, just want to hear what she’s been doing with her time. I think they’ll lift lockdown today.

I think you should even get two points for that, Mommy, Mommy. I looked up all of my girl’s teachers on RateMyProfessor.com even though classes won’t start til next week. I just wanted to see what was said about them. Only one had some poor reviews, so that’s great.

I found out why D wasn’t in such a great mood when we called her on her birthday this week. BF apparently forgot. Uh oh, could she be the first of the turkey drops?

Jaylynn, have a safe move in! DH and I will be in SD this weekend, as well. Like showmom says, it’s supposed to be warm!

LOVE the origami club! Wish my daughter’s school had one.

Thanks, lilmom. We leave for the airport in two hours! I’ll wave to you!

Launched yesterday - hope it went well downtoearth, megan12, tozubri, bhmamacita!

Launching today - congratulations Gwen Fairfax, glopop11!

Dropped S off at school yesterday. Move-in was easy - they had a ton of students working there to help carry things in from the car, including a fridge!

I was so worried about S because he looked so nervous and lonely in his room. He didn’t know anyone, although there were several upperclassmen who introduced themselves and tried to make him feel welcomed. We spent all morning setting up his room to try and help him feel settled and at home. Then at 4:00, they kicked the parents out and started the orientation activities for the kids. I got a text from him later on saying that he was having fun and meeting lots of new people, so that made me feel a little better.

Still, when I woke up this morning, my first thought was “my baby is gone”. S and I are really close, so this is tough. Just having a sad day…:(

Back home again. Got together with a friend in the area and my cousin and family before heading out. Have had numerous texts, both informational and questions. And talked to him as he walked to breakfast this morning. He’s busy but seems happy so far! Has already found out about swim test and math placement, so is ready to pick his courses and register tomorrow.

Note for a couple of us (UR Chem):

Middle son sent me an e-mail and said his section of Chem (T/TH) does NOT require the online component. He’s going to ask about his older book edition today if it’s not mentioned in class. I’ll be more confident in the online portion after class too actually… but that’s the news at lunch time.

Megan12 - sending hugs. I still feel the same way and there are many things I miss about my guy(s).

ps If anyone cares… my clock still works!

Aw, megan12 - sending happy thoughts. It really is a hard transition. No way to avoid it - you just have to walk through it and now that the new normal is going to be great too!
