Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

@Confused - She really liked RIT, particularly the strength of the programs she’s interested in and the co-op. All the kids seemed very similar to her in personality. It was really hot (upper 90s) while we were there, so it was a bit uncomfortable in some un-airconditioned areas. If you’d like more detailed notes, pm me - I don’t want to compromise her anonymity.

Sorry I misunderstood, ebruin. When you said you played varsity sports and wanted to attend a d1 school, I assumed it was to compete at a d1 school. Whoops!

Lakersince95- I think there is a Western Schools version of this thread- not sure too many people looked at the Calif. schools you are listing. SUNY Buffalo you look on target by your stats. SUNY Stony Brook you might be more on the cusp but pretty close to a match.

Hi, thought I’d post a report about DD friend’s recent trip - just talked with the parent about a visit to Lynchburg. (I applied there as a high-school senior decades ago - before we had internet… I liked the literature they sent me and it was so pretty!)
Anyway, the report I got - really lovely school, very accommodating, and a more reasonable price tag than some other private schools. Merit Aid for the B student as well. One of DD’s old teammates just finished her freshman year there, and her mom tells me how much her D loves it there…

When are GPAs loaded into Naviance at your kids schools? My DS is a rising senior and his GPA is still not in the system. I asked the GC before school was out and she told me to check with IT. I emailed IT, never got a response. I emailed the principal about a month ago and he responded that he was “surprised” they were not loaded yet and would try to get them entered by August 1st, did not happen. iParent is also down for the rest of the summer for maintenance, no access to transcripts or schedules until Sept 1st. Very frustrating.

I’d say stay away from Naviance for GPA. My school uses Naviance, it was fine and dandy and showed the right GPA averages for admitted students, then suddenly it jumped to our weighted system overnight. Now, it’s totally useless for comparison - Harvard went from showing a 4.0 average to a 6.2, which is a higher number on our scale but not actually achievable! No teachers/GC’s/tech people at school seem to have an answer to the issue.

So I dunno, that’s just my bad experience with it. My school is also extremely competitive and rigorous, which has given me a horribly warped view of how I stack up compared to other people.

Naviance - with DS1, GPA was loaded at the end of junior year (late June) when they sent out a summer packet that included a copy of hs transcript. Our high school only uses unweighted GPA. Now DS2 is a rising senior and his GPA is still not in Naviance but the packet didn’t arrive until last week. Not happy the info is so late getting into the system but found with DS1 that it was very accurate and extremely helpful.

Our GPA"s are always on Naviance. They publish the GPAs on their report cards each marking period along with their class ranks–it makes this process SO much easier :D.

I’ve found the Naviance for college acceptance rates to be pretty useless since so many of the schools are blocked for privacy. We use Cappex–so what if the scores are self-reported–to get a wider view of acceptance rates.

Hmm, now that I look at my Naviance account my GPA isn’t in there…it let me enter in my own SAT scores, so maybe I have to put it in myself. Hmm.

After reading about this I went and checked my son’s account on Naviance. No GPA, has his SAT II scores from Jan and his SAT I scores from May but not his SAT II scores from June.

Will look into this further.

OK so it’s not just DS’s HS, the GC told me to use my finger and “estimate” on the scattergram. We will definitely ask for the transcripts and letters of rec as soon as allowed and “guide” the GC when she writes the letter of rec.

My son’s naviance only has his PSAT scores listed. When I called the school to have transcripts and test scores sent for a visit program, I was told they didn’t have his ACT or SAT scores. His GPA is still from the 1st marking period of last year :(

DH and DS are off to look at Hobart, Dickinson, Gettysburg and maybe Franklin & Marshall.
I have to stay behind and work :frowning: This is the last overnight trip (I hope), in the Fall we plan to go to Clark and Providence College on day trips, has any one checked them out? Any feedback?

Ruby,
Please post a FULL report on this trip. My S visited F&M as well, and even went to their soccer camp this summer. I visited Dickinson and Gettysburg with D a few years ago. I enjoy comparing notes! Thanks!

I did Providence with DS1 a couple years ago. Beautiful campus and a lot of good things about it. We weren’t overly impressed by the dining halls or dorms. The downside was the outside neighborhood wasn’t the safest but, more importantly to us, they have a special program (Civ) that all students have to take that requires four courses (16 credits) taken during freshman and sophomore years as part of their core curriculum. It’s team taught and is meant to create broad thinkers. It just struck us as courses that my son would never “elect” to take and if he didn’t love Providence and ended up transferring we questioned whether they would all transfer to another school. It’s not like where DS1 ended up he has to take a certain number of courses for their “plan” but he can select them from different categories and he has more options. Good school but the “Civ” program helped us to eliminate it from our list.

Hmm
Checked out Providence on the Net Price Calculator, it doesn’t look like they offer much in the way of aid at all! NPC could be wrong but we may have to cross it off the list

Nothing to say. I just didn’t like us being on page 3!

Stumbled across this website:
studentreviews.com
Student reviews on just about every college in the country, spent way too much time reading them last night. Some of the reviews are a little scary in regards to drugs/drinking on campus. I’m trying not to freak out too much. Let me know what you guys think, each college seems to have quite a few negative reviews but I guess you can’t make everybody happy.

Ruby–take most of those reviews with a grain of salt. I noticed when searching for schools in one area that the same person had written the same thing on about 4 different college sites. I try to read between the lines on those and don’t find them all that helpful. It’s kind of like reviews on hotel websites, you don’t really know if they are real or not.

Of course I take the reviews with a grain of salt. You have to weed thru the negative ones but I think insight can be gained on the class sizes, social scene, campus safety those are some of my concerns with my son. The reviews for UMASS Amherst, Tufts, BC and BU, (schools I know well) were pretty accurate. He wants to go from living right outside a large city to a school in a one stop sign town, having grown up in a VERY small town I want him to make sure he knows what to expect and what he wants. He’s on a trip right now with his Dad and he’s falling in love with every school he sees. There is NO WAY we are applying to 20 schools, the ax IS going to fall.

By the way, I’m one of those people who posts reviews on hotels.com and tripadvisor :)
