Jkiwmom…yes it does make me feel better, thanks!! ;-)

My D received her second academic acceptance today: Point Park. Now, I know Point Park doesn’t have a high academic reputation, but my D is going for technical theatre, and it does have a great reputation for that. The academic acceptances are nice, but we can’t wait to get a theatre acceptance! Still, with all of her academic obstacles and disabilities, it sure is nice to know that a couple of schools want her. :)

Ugadg…awesome news for your daughter! Yay!!!

I am on this thread getting ideas for our neighbor’s D and I have to comment and reassure you all.

We went through all of this last year and to top it off, the New England October snowstorm knocked out our power for 10 days starting Oct 28th! S2 still managed to get it all done (when the generator would go on, it would kick us off the Internet!). His arts supplement recording had to be redone but it all got done in time for the ED1 deadline (and done well!). He got into his first choice school.

So hang in there everyone, it was crazy but even with all the setbacks last year, everything worked out fine. Wishing you all the best!

uga, congratulations!
Thanks chemusic. :)

Another one here who is worrying about first term grades. I know that they’ll get better as the year progresses, but the first term grades for a few classes will probably bring down the gpa. Unfortunately, these are the ones that schools will see.

Glad you guys liked the article, It hit the spot for me too.
MLB-is it true that only the application is due by the deadline not the supporting documents? That would be a HUGE relief because my son’s GC wants to submit the transcripts after the first quarter grades are out , right before Thanksgiving, taking deep breathes, deep, deep breathes.
Meanwhile my poor neglected 6th grader tried to convince me there was nothing I needed to see in his folder from school, uh huh-just a geography test…that he got a 50 on.

Ruby, check with each school. One of D’s schools with an 11/1 EA date says that supporting documents must be in by 11/15. Another says all documents need to be in 11/1 and another is vague.

Most schools need the application by the deadline to open a file on the student, but also know that recs/scores/. . . will dribble in afterwards. Good idea to read the fine print, but through my first two we probably have experience with 15-20 different schools and none of them required all supporting documentation by the application deadline (although neither applied ED–that might be a different situation). With #3 I’m also thinking that if one or two of his EA apps slip to RD that’s not the end of the world. I’d just like to have his part finished as soon as he can muster it. I don’t sweat the other stuff.

Joisymom–finally read that article that brought a smile to my face now that the end is <almost?> in sight. I’m working hard to keep my mouth shut this week. DS has some polishing to do on the Big Essay and hasn’t yet written the smaller EC essay, but he did mention to me yesterday that one of his teachers told him Friday that she uploaded her recommendation for him (:D). I’m headed out of town for a few days next Monday so I’m really really hoping DS is aware that 11/1 will be while I’m gone so wouldn’t it be really really nice to have this all wrapped up by the end of the weekend already??</almost?>

I have been following this thread for months as we fit in quite nicely with my third child.

My D has been on top of the application process and there has been tons of support from school so I havent worried about that as much as just getting in somewhere. D’s academic self confidence is in the toilet. She has struggled and year after year sat at the back of the pack of her 27 student senior class. Her recent progress reports were so good, the college counselor encouraged her to go ahead and apply to her rolling admissions schools and those with EA. ( she was previously adament about waiting for fall semester grades.) So, as of yesterday we have officially entered the waiting game.

How wonderful that some of your students have had an acceptance or two. Congratulations. It really does take the pressure off.

To those of you still struggling, somehow, amazingly, they do get the job done. It might be a minute before a midnight deadline, but it gets there.

I look forward to following along and celebrating the many successes our students will experience. And as I tell my kids…even failure is a life lesson, it still hurts, but learning to fail is an important life skill.

Congrats Ugadog! I soooooo look forward to having that sense of relief :).

3rd time around, I agree with you completely. It’s similar to watching a toddler begin to walk. I am holding back and trying to let D1 “toddle”, even if it means that she falls some during this process.

D printed off copies of the teacher rec forms last night and copies of her resume…there is some movement.

And, the registrar emailed today with the revised/corrected transcript! It may be Nov. 14 at 11:59…but for some reason I think she’s going to get the ED app. done.

Yay! One teacher rec is in! D asked 4 teachers to make sure that she’d get 2, but this (wonderful) teacher is the one to submit it.

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC

Yea, Anniezz!

My D did come home today with some good news. She has talked to one of the two teachers, and he said he’d be happy to send the rec for her. One down, one to go…

We are polishing the Common App for submission as soon as SAT scores arrive tomorrow.

One problem we’re having is how to do the hours/week for an activity that is 24/7. Specifically, DD was an exchange student for six weeks in Bolivia. Also, should we include the weeks we hosted a Bolivian student in our home?

Mamaduck - perhaps include in the addditional info section instead of EC section?

STILL in application limbo, waiting for the school to do their part. Grrr! But, since my son’s school has a whacky way of calculating GPA, the GPA of a straight A student is only 3.88, I found out today that his 3.3 converted to a 4.0 scale is really a 3.4. A bit too late for self reporting and the transcript still says 3.3 so I’m wondering what the point of giving us a conversion scale was.

First acceptance, U of Oregon, one of my son’s top choices! Sooooooo relieved. I know there will be some disappointments ahead for him, and for all our kids who are squarely within this thread, but that first offer is still just so sweet. Just what he needed to face a week of mid-terms that start tomorrow. Phew, phew, phew.

Oh HL, I feel for your D! Similar things going on here - not quite 12, but still some difficulty getting the words on paper in a way that says what she wants.

I know that we have awesome kids, and I hope that they know it… but it’s so hard for 17/18 year olds to be able to write something extraordinary in this kind of time pressure, that really tells the story of who they are, and that THEY are happy with!

wow, did that make any sense at all? I think moms have trouble putting words together too!

If it causes anyone to fret less over his or her own child, my ED deadline is November first and I still haven’t finished my Common App essay, nor have I started my personal statement or my supplement essay.

Can anyone tell me what should go in a personal statement though, exactly? I’m thinking about gojng with something anout when I was Senior Patrol Leader of my Boy Scout troop, and what it taught meand how difficult it was to lead without disciplining people and what not. Not sure if it’s supposed to be an essay-like production, or if if’s just supposed to elaborate on one activity a teeny tiny bit more than before. Any help?

And I think it’s my first time posting here… I’m not a parent, and I actually have a 3.43 (withCs and Fs abound), but I feel like I’ll fit in, from what I’ve read. =P

Eli–is this a personal statement for a particular school? Or do you mean the “elaborate on an EC” short statement? All I can tell you is this should be about something that isn’t addressed more fully in the rest of the application. I think Scouts sounds great.

Slow progress here, and <hopefully> a plan for being FINISHED. DS was told his second LOR will be uploaded by tomorrow (thanks to all of you wonderful teachers out there!). Tomorrow is a day off of school, I leave town on Monday, and as has been noted, next Thursday is the Dreaded Deadline. Hoping to have DS draft the short EC statement this afternoon after school, do some heavy editing on The Big One tomorrow (I’m off of work as well–it’s my birthday!), polish everything off on Saturday (and by “Saturday” I mean “probably Sunday”), and let 'er rip.</hopefully>

New SAT scores this morning. Improvement seen. (relief). I hope all our students see some improvement.

Thank you heavylidded for your kind words.

Congratulations Jane 345. Take a deep breathe…your child is going to college and accepted at a top choice, fantastic!
