The kicker about checking college grades online…your kid has to give you the login, the college can’t :)

I thought that by submitting an ED application that requires 1st quarter grades would motivate by son to start off the year strong. The grades go in Friday. Right now, I’m just hoping for a deferral to the RD round and not an outright rejection.

We are back from Carnegie Mellon and her first interview/portfolio review. She loved the school and felt the interview went well. I guess we wait now…

Thursday we leave for UNCSA and the next interview.

HL–Ithaca College? If so, please fill us in (while we’re waiting for all those results ). DS applied there because he got an invite for one of those streamlined applications and it looks like a nice-sized school but we really don’t know much about it.

I second the request for the dish on Ithaca.

Ree, I feel your pain too! It isn’t terribly surprising, but D had a rough quarter as well. In her case, it’s a combination - fall sport, more challenging courses, illness and some other stressors - They’re definitely improving and I’m confident that her mid-year grades will be better, but for the early schools looking at those first quarter grades, these are probably her worst grades since she started high school!

I can share some Ithaca thoughts. About 6,000 students, lovely (but windy!) hilltop campus overlooking a small lake. Large variety of majors offered - excellent music programs. Small class sizes. On campus housing required 1st 3 years, seniors tend to live off campus. Study abroad program offers options on their campuses in China and London. Cornell nearby. Town of Ithaca has a nice vibe. We visited on day when many students had skipped out (Good Friday) so we didn’t get a good feel for the student body. D likes it - I didn’t have a strong opinion either way.

Chiming in re Ithaca (D was in this thread’s category for class of '11). We toured Ithaca and D thought it was “fine” but underwhelming. We went on a beautiful day in the spring but no one was really smiling much, or being welcoming. She thought it a bit “whitebread” and was offended that non music majors had limited access to practice rooms. Generally she found it kind of bland- not horrible, but not her kind of place.

There are 13 visit reports for Ithaca here… [Ithaca College - Videos, Photos, and Visit Reports](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vibe/ithaca-college/)

We visited Ithaca in the summer prior to my son’s senior year. We added it in on a trip to see RIT I think. I have a good friend whose daughter is a freshman there and absolutely loves it. I believe she is a communications major. Their communications programs are first rate and a friend of my daughters that graduated from Ithaca is now working at CNN. I loved the town - very cool vibe and similar to that of Burlington, VT where my youngest goes to college.

<drumroll please.="" .=""> So I got tired of the thumb-twiddling and decided to just make an inquiry of the one rolling admissions school I thought DS should have heard from ages ago. University of Montana said they admitted him on July 31st. Really? I swear we never got anything from them. Anyway–96% acceptance rate, but still, it’s something, right? Hoping it’s high enough on the list that we at least go visit. (Preferably when there’s some snow at the local ski resorts. )</drumroll>

woo hoo MyLB!!!

Congrats MyLB & Son!

LB, Congratulations!

@mamaduck, yes, D is still in love with Warren Wilson College. And Heavylidded, oh, my gosh yes --I had no idea how good this relief would feel!

Slumom, I’ve come across many of your posts on Alfred Universtiy & had a question since my S is very close to applying there ED. How do you think the school is with respect to kids who need academic support? I’ve read the website & it sounds like they really make an effort (more than many schools) but I don’t see it mentioned on lists of colleges that are great for LD students. We’ve visited Alfred several times & think that it’s a near-perfect fit (small LAC, great art department, rural, quirky students, accessible professors, etc.) but I have concerns about my S succeeding in a college atmosphere given his lack of organizational/executive functioning skills. Any thoughts?

Congrats HL and MyLB! Wonderful news. I am not a patient person so I am finding the waiting very difficult!

Matlac- Have you looked at St. Lawrence? I know they accepted and explained services available for a friend’s LD kid.

Thanks to all for the congrats and yes it does feel good. Funny how as soon as an acceptance comes in you get right back on the school’s web site and re-explore. Next step is to get a second from. . . anywhere. Two or more = a decision has to be made!! Love those multiple options!!

HL–I love OWU. It ended up being DS#1’s runner up after all was said and done. I know he would have been very happy there. My 13’er has applied there too.

Joisymom–hang in there. Fret about a dry turkey next Thursday or something instead.

Anyone else been spooked yet by a “skinny envelope” that just contains some letter on financial aid or logging into their website? Twice now.

Joisymom–honestly, not so much. I’m pretty sure there are very few actual rejections at this stage of the game. Most of the EA/ED kids who do not get acceptances will be deferred to the RD pool. (I.e., I think most of the bad news will come with the RD decisions. So we all have that to look forward to!) At this point you can expect a skinny envelope from almost every school your kid applies to–just acknowledging the application, with that login info, the financial aid info, . . .

Heavylidded, that’s fantastic! I’ve already shared this, but my brother-in-law is an OWU alum. He has nothing but positive things to say about OWU. I have a flicker photo stream of our visit, so if you haven’t seen the campus in person yet then let me know and I will give you the link. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

@matlac, I looked at Alfred too and it was high on my daughter’s list for a long time. The OOS costs, quirky students, and art program also appealed to us. Alfred is mentioned in the guide called The Best Colleges for B Students and mentions LD support, but I really have no idea just how much support that means. There’s a forum on CC where you might ask that question and get some more info. on Alfred though:
