Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

to oneson-- I would call financial aid people at the school and ask if they can give you a pre-read. I think that most will do that. My S had a friend interested in UPS and the dad got some kind of estimate from their financial aid dept. You can also call admissions and ask what happens if DS is accepted ED but financial aid is not as expected-- I’m sure they can tell you options. I would ask for head of admissions or someone high up, not a new person

I would do this with 2 phone calls because because it would seem like it involves 2 different groups. Good luck!

Agree with MyLB-- I am ready to be done with HS . Prob because this is my third and last going through. Our HS has Powerschool, where parents can log in and check grades daily (or hourly) if they want

I checked fairly often with oldest-- maybe one a week. WIth middle kid maybe every 2-3 weeks. With this last one I haven’t looked at power school in several years. Have decided that it is up to DS. Although I suppose if I got some kind of notice he was failing a class I would rethink this

I am also very tired of fund raising-- if i never see another box of chocolate to sell or chili feed tickets to sell it will make my year.

idahomom–you and I need to go out for a virtual drink. This is also my third and last and I haven’t checked his grades all year.

I was all set to post another “big envelope from admissions office!” message, this one from Champlain College. Now wouldn’t you be fairly certain you knew what was inside? Well DS came home early and opened it up and it’s a <very attractive=""> Champlain College poster. But nothing else. Not one thing. What the he**?</very>

One other complication re: the ED question I posted below: DS now says that he wishes he’d had a chance to meet other students, attend a class, etc…we visited on Dec. 21, and only the admissions office and cafeteria, bookstore etc was open. He met a couple of professors, had a great tour, but no students.

And, yes, we did discuss that ahead of time, and later after the visit. I did point out that the benefit of RD was more time to visit.

What I didn’t do was say no to the ED.

MyLB - Thanks for the heads up on the Champlain envelope :)

Onesonmom - most of the ED agreements I’ve read say if you turn down the acceptance for financial reasons, you will NOT be considered for RD. But you could probably have it changed to RD at this point. Sounds like that might be a good idea to toss around.

What is the advantage to changing from ED to RD?? Do you think your will get better financial aid? Or is it to free up so you can accept other admissions?

Posting an update on our status. Daughter has 3.0/3.4 so she’s kind of in between this group and the 3.3-3.6 group With ACT 27.

Applied 4 CSUs in California, accepted Fullerton, waiting on others. We touted and she did not like them except San Diego. They are her match /financial safeties. Although San Diego State received 74,500 applications!!! That’s got to be one of the highest in the nation.

Accepted Univ of Denver, no merit aid. They said it very clearly in the body of they acceptance letter so I didn’t have to search around for it.
Accepted at Montana State and Northern Arizona both reasonablle with merit. These are good choices fir her, but she is waiting for a couple of decisions.

Chapman Univ deferred, HMFR
American University RDHMFR
Cal Lutheran RD match

And she’s deciding on whether to submit Rolling to Dominican in Rafael, CA.

Does anyone have insight for Dominican? Shes going for film major so obviously Chapman is her favorite.

Oneson-- With added uncertainty of your S wanting to see the students I agree with ree that changing to RD might be a good move. Thinking back, my S heard in mid march from UPS and he applied RD. So it is only about 4 extra weeks wait

I realize that seems like a long time-- but then there would be time to visit when students are there and also to compare FA offers before he decides for sure.

Don’t feel bad-- it is so hard to figure out what is the best path, and kids change their minds many times through the process (at least mine did). It will work out.

My senior did a complete reverse on what he wants to major in between spring break jr year and application deadlines this past fall. We never would have made the same visits last March if we had known. But-- he could switch again–

Accepted at Lawrence! A little stunned but very happy…that was the last one we were waiting to hear from. DD now in at OWU, Beloit and Lawrence with decent merit aid. Decision-making officially begins…

Takes a little bit of sting out of that rejection from Wooster, that’s for sure.

Geez, sorry about all the typos, trying mu Kindle Fire

Congrats, mdnhmass! Decision-making mode–good position to be in this early!

Congrats mdnhmass! I keep wishing for all the decisions to arrive (only 2 more) but then I realize that we still need to get the FA awards.

Thanks for all the great responses.

Changing from ED to RD just buys some time to visit again (and have DS actually be among actual students this time, sit in on a class, maybe talk to one of the professors in his major) and for us to really be sure. No advantage for either admission or FA, other than to do it now/make the change BEFORE the ED process is over, so that he will make it into the RD pool.

Congrats on Ithaca, Marquette and Lawrence!

Big envelope from H ofs tra today with $17k in merit aid. DS could barely break himself away from Xbox to even open the envelope. Today was last day of midterms but come on. SSS - check!

Congrats on Ithaca, Marquette, Hofstra and Lawrence-- did I miss any? I am spending way too much time on here today-- should be grading. But I have an extra day monday to catch up

coral-- are you thinking of attending the Denver Accepted student day? Just wondering-- DS is in exactly the same position as your D-- accepted to Denver, no merit, seems to think it looks like a great fit on paper but one of the few he did not visit. Not sure when all the FA info will be coming, but maybe not before we have to decide on a visit

STILL waiting on Redlands-- only been 10 weeks when they said 3-4. Many others have siad it took 8-10 weeks so I guess I need to relax, but hard to plan when there is this uncertainty. oh well-- almost wine time. Plus DS seems to have cheered up, not sure why but I will not question it.

Plus one more HMFR RD (GWU-- very late addition to list), and the deferred from LMU final decision to wait on–

Congratulations on all the acceptances!

Does HMFR mean what I think it means ???

Hi Idahomom, it looks like my daughter and your son have similar applications in some areas.

Yes, we are going to go to Pioneer Days visit for Univ of Denver, probably in March. My daughter emailed them and they said an invitation should be coming out next week.

I have been talking to their Financial Aid office because we have a volatile financial situation - unusually high income 2012 which is going way down in 2013-2017. I was honest with them that I cannot allow my daughter to consider Univ of Denver any further (and we won’t spend money to visit) unless they can review our situation. Unfortunately, because we didn’t get merid aid, there is no guarantee what is going to happen over the 4 years. At least Merit Aid gives you some idea of relief each year. We have college savings, so there is still hope. As long as it doesn’t go over $$XXX in the total 4 years (if we are lucky and she graduates in 4 years!!!) Univ of Denver was very encouraging, I have already sent CSS Profile (with the little explanation box filled in) but she encouraged me to send in the FAFSA as soon as possible and they would be open to a supplemental letter with explanation and supporting materials. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for me to do the FAFSA because all the complicated return info hasn’t arrived. I am just going to have to bite the bullet and do an estimate this weekend.

Going to Bozeman, MT for Montana State Feb 1st visit day - I don’t think it could be any more polar opposite from where we live! It is going to be a big wakeup call for my daughter - Mom plans to spend about 6.2 hours visiting the library or any other building on campus that has a nice cozy place to be inside  I cannot imagine walking around outside for a campus tour on February 1st. We don’t even own any clothes that will fight off that much cold. Daughter is already working the “I need xyz new clothes before we go”. She’s quite the clothes horse, in a more elegant way than most of the other girls at her school.

Idahomon, please keep us updated on your choices as you move along this big adventure. My daughter loves loves Univ of Denver on paper also (well, the web really). Chapman (deferred) and Denver are her top choices now. And, Chapman is even more expensive than Denver

Onesonmom, yes HMFR means what you think… It was coined in the parents 2013:2017 group and is so great it’s really stuck.

It took me some searching to figure out HMFR too!
