Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Congrats on the Wofford, Miami and Goucher acceptances! I thought Goucher had the best campus “situation” that we visited. A huge, quiet campus but just outside sooo much to do within walking distance.
I’m with you NPR - I really enjoy hearing how everyone’s story ends…or should I say begins? My d’s ED came in two months ago already but I am still checking in here to see how it all turns out.

Smile!

Joisymom, I had to scroll back-Warren Wilson, yes? We visited that school. When I retire, that’s where I’m moving! I really wanted my S to go to Guilford, not far from WW. But he felt at home at Goucher.

I know one child on this thread is going to Oberlin, ED. Have others made decisions yet?

Hmm, my D’s email from Goucher just said that letters would be going in the mail on Monday. Doesn’t sound good. I told her about acceptance emails to prepare her for a rejection and she shrugged her shoulders–so what, Mom–I have 8 other acceptances–not a big deal!

Heading up to SUNY Purchase this morning. Hope she likes it.

NPR mom, CONGRATS to your son!!! I keep coming back too to hear where everyone’s kids are heading too. This is just such an uplifting thread…

Btw, it’s my DD that is going to Warren Wilson. Joisymom’s DD is going to Muhlenberg. I can’t keep these acceptances straight either! :)

Good morning! Wonderful that Groundhogs Chuck (Staten I) & Phil ¶ have both declared that there will be an early spring this year :)

Congratulations to:
NPRMom & pkdof13 on Goucher (I’ve heard great things about that school)
MyLB on Wofford
Jane345 on Miami

Jane, my S was accepted to Miami as well & as a hockey player he’s quite excited. Looking forward to visiting campus.

ConfusedMom - great about the improved GPA; however, now you’re over the limit for this thread and may get kicked out ;)

Congrats on Goucher and Guilford and Wofford! All 3 seem like great schools where our kids would thrive.
Goucher was on my D’s list but she withdrew her app when she got into her #1, but I would have been happy if she’d landed there. :)

Congratulations everyone! Good news for so many.

Just dropping back in after a while (one of the consequences of having my child later has turned out to be the timing of my own mother’s medical crises during DS’ college quest).

DS just received a nice acceptance letter from Willamette University yesterday with an even nicer $$$ scholarship and invitation to compete for a 2/3 scholarship.

This is particularly great news for two reasons. First, he now has one of his top small private colleges as a safety, in case he’s deferred or rejected at his top choice. He already has a smaller OOS state school, Western Washington, with some $$$ as his 2nd choice and we put in his housing application yesterday there, since the bigger schools rely so much on first-come choice, and it seems to me the consequences of housing selection are pretty important in those larger schools.

But more important, Willamette is much more selective than his top choice by some 11%, so this is a good omen I think.

This was also a huge boost to DS’ confidence, especially after I showed him a list I had written showing all the schools he’s applied to ranked from most selective to least selective. Colorado College, where he’d been rejected ED (still an ouch but less sting now) at 26% was followed by Willamette at 41%, with his other acceptances scattered down the list.

Jane–honestly no idea what you’re apologizing for. I’m thrilled about all of these acceptances! Miami really is a beautiful school. Ely–is your son looking to play there? I can tell you the hockey games are a lot more exciting and well-attended than the football games. Pretty fun!

My son is two years away from applying to schools but he has begun looking and Goucher is a school of real interest. Would anyone be willing to share the the GPA, SAT/ACT stats of their accepted child. Did the school ask for UW or just use W GPA?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats to all on Willamette, Goucher, Miami, Guilford, Wofford, did I forget any? It’s nice to hear of all the good news coming in.

Sorry about deferred decisions and good luck to those still waiting-- I didn’t check updates yesterday at my usual Friday afternoon time, so lots to catch up on this morning.

I have a hard time keeping track on who has made final decisions as well-- I wish we were in that category. I am still in the stage of figuring out which schools DS wants to revisit, plus there are a few he never visited at all. Without knowing FA totals and not hearing from all schools yet it seems difficult to decide on these accepted student visit options

Question to Oneson-- did you find a list ranking the schools or did you dig through stats yourself to come up with the rankings? Just curious

Coming out of my long lurkdom on this thread to say congratulations to everyone for the great acceptances! My D is in at Earlham and Goucher, 2 for 2 so far (with 9 still to hear from). So happy that she is in at two wonderful schools and that no matter what she will have choices (or at least, a choice)!

Shacherry,
My S is right in the range of this thread, 3.1 or so. I don’t think his school weights GPA. Their theory is that colleges recalculate the GPA anyway. He only applied to SAT optional schools and did not submit scores, but his average SAT was mid 500’s.
Hope this helps.

Daisy-congrats. Both are great schools, I hear.

Hi everyone! I’ve been lurking on this thread for about a month and I’ve finally decided to join your warm and supportive group! Congratulations to everyone on all of their fine acceptances!

DD was also accepted to Goucher via email yesterday, which was surprising as we thought that she applied for RD! She applied to 14 schools and has been accepted to 9 so far - UWF (U. of W. FL), Hofstra, Adelphi, Baldwin Wallace, Roanoke, Lycoming, Elon and SUNY Binghamton. She’s gotten varying amounts of merit aid at all of the privates except for Goucher (but we’re hoping that a merit award letter will come with the acceptance letter sometime this week since she really likes this school.) No word on aid yet from UWF or Binghamton but we’re honestly not expecting anything from Bing.- it was her HMFR! We’re still waiting for decisions from Guilford, Clark, Wagner, USF (U. of S. FL) and UNC Wilmington (deferred to RD.)

We’re visiting Roanoke later this month so that she can compete in their Scholars Competition and we’re thinking about touring Guilford as well since they’re only 2 hours apart. Does anyone have any info/insights on Guilford? It seems like a very nice school on paper, but I think that I’m more excited about it than she is…

Once again, congrats to all! Our kids will do just fine…

terrific–DS and I are headed to Guilford tomorrow for a Monday visit. I assume you’ve read all of the CTCL stuff about it? I don’t know much else except the daughter of a good friend went there (her sister went to UVA) and he liked it so much they put him on the Board of Visitors. I’ll report back when we’re home.

MyLB, although I know that Guilford is a member college of CTCL, I must admit that I never actually read the book :o All I really know is whatever I’ve read on their web site, which of course is not exactly objective information! Have a great visit on Monday; can’t wait to hear all about it!

Long time lurker.

I just had to post that I am so thrilled to see the wonderful choices your kids have received!

I have also been partial to LACs. With so many on here receiving great news from LACs, I have confirmed my belief LACs are a great place to plant a high school kid and watch “grow” into an adult.

@shacherry - Goucher - here is a link to their common data set. http://www.goucher.edu/Documents/IR/Common%20Data%20Set%202011_2012_Final_Jan%2017%202011.pdf.

idahomom: i don’t recall which one specifically (it’s been awhile), but as I recall I used stats from College Navigator, College Board, or College ******* - I noticed some variation among them, but I tried to use the most recent year available. Some are trending up (meaning, selectivity going up / lower percentage admitted), especially Colorado College, which if I had known earlier could have cautioned DS about getting his hopes up.

Thanks Longhaul the info on Goucher is very very helpful. Where would I get these common data set documents for other schools? Are they downloadable from schools websites? That was the first time I saw one.

ELY - please don’t kick me out!

HL - thanks! All fingers and toes are crossed here too.

Love hearing all the success stories here and also love finding out about colleges that I am not personally familiar with.

Just keep in mind (as I’ve posted several times before) that CTCL is a lobbying organization, not an accrediting organization.

There is no special status or proof of quality by being a member.
