There is a blog with a very knowledgeable Mom who has written everything you need to know about finding a college to play baseball. She also has tons of data on schools. Do It Yourself College Rankings (Michelle). You’ll have to find it on the Internet because I’m not allowed to post a link to her blog. You can also sign up for automatic emails and I have found a lot of useful information.

Was in and out of town over the last month–most recent trip was for a vol thing I do…

K2’s end of yr grades==are anyone’s guess…and I know that unless K2 puts in major effort for the math exam, it will derail many many things. sigh.
otoh during my trip I worked with someone who turned out to be a private GC. That was a helpful morning. We will be trimming the list–which the GC liked. So I have been on the right track for K2…time will tell.

SAT next weekend and then the ACT. If K2 can work hard to bump the grades a bit with the final exams and if the SAT improved in the eng and written I might sleep better. The math was fine.
The m/cr scores are fine for a few of the schools, yet if they are higher there might be merit money.

With the ACT being a totally different test, hope to see K2 put in some prep effort as that test was great for my k1 (who had 11 APs) K2 does not have that…and the ACT is content heavy.

on APs, K2 felt good about the AP taken–we will see

Thoroughly enjoying reading “Crazy U - One Dad’s Crash Course in Getting His Kid Into College” by Andrew Ferguson. A humorous, satirical look at how things have changed in the last 25 years regarding the college search process with expensive private college counselors, doing extra curricular activities just for the college resume, etc. and basically feeling like a schmuck if your kid isn’t an over-achieving 2350 SAT, 3.98 GPA superstar. Hooray for some levity and balance!

Favorite nugget so far… “I can tell you the kind of school I’d really like,” my son told the college counselor, with an air of finality. " I want to go to a place where I can go to a football game, take off my shirt, paint my chest, and major in beer."

coralbrook - wow! I just saw your post! Thank you so much. I just spend the last 45 mins reading the blog and going to her outside links. So much to learn. Thank you so much for telling me about this.

5boys - I wrote a lengthy post and it got deleted. Sigh… Wooster is a great school from what I hear. You can’t go wrong. I do believe, however, that a boy who needs constant stimulation would be thrilled with Oberlin. The students are constantly on the go - in one night, they may see a documentary, help out with a fundraiser, walk a professor’s dog and go to the observatory for a picnic and stargazing. They rarely go off campus because there is so much to do on campus.

Ds would be happy to show you and your ds around in October!

I need some advise. Our first child will start applying to colleges this summer, I really don’t know what I’m doing and our very small school doesn’t have a guidance counslor. The first few applications can go out July 1 but our school is totally closed the month of July. Should we wait until August when the school can send the transcripts or is it ok to send everything with a note explaining the transcipts will come later? I’m hoping to have everything done before school starts in Fall to get pressure off DD. I keep telling her if she gets everything done early she might know where shes going by Christmas or early 2014. Thanks for any replys.

Even though you are going to apply during the summer, I think what you really mean is you will try to have the applications filled out and all of the essays completed (good luck with that!!).

Applications can be submitted but they are not complete until teacher letter of recommendations are loaded, school report is completed by school counselor and transcript sent. So,you are at the mercy of the school. In my experience they really don’t care when you ask, they don’t send anything until right before the early app deadline- Nov 1st

But, a really smart thing to do right now is to decide which teachers you would like to write the recommendations and maybe ask them now. At least you’ll be at the front of the line.

DD goes to a very small school and they know we will be starting to apply to schools this summer. Transcripts are not the problem but I have a feeling getting the recommendations and the person who is our guidance couslor to fill out some forms will try my patience. I have told my daughter to have everything done this summer so she won’t have that pressure in the fall. There is only one school that we will apply to in July, Iowa State. The plan will be to have appls filled out and essays ready to go in early Sept. This is our first child and we have no local help so very greatful for CC. My daughters #1 school, Truman State, we had never heard of before coming here. I hope she gets in because it really seemed like a good fit for her.

Newfaith, I saw your daughter’s stats and it look like she qualifies for an [automatic scholarship](<a href=“Admission | Truman State University”>Admission | Truman State University) to Truman State. For most schools, if you qualify for the automatic scholarship, you’re in. I believe Truman State is the same way, so you’ve got quite a nice safety on your hands.

My S is a bare minimum, goal is to get 92 percent then shocked that he earned 85 percent. Also seems to think it is pointless to visit schools as all can be learned on the Internet.

I am very happy that he found something he enjoys and seems to be focused on it. He just finished track and field and earned a metal at cif in hj.

With that said he would like to attend a college that has a track and field team.

We visited long beach (reach), Fullerton and Cal poly Pomona. The latter two he liked.

He is 3.0 but without freshman and weighted 3.45. 1230/1770 sat

Was really worried about him getting into any school, so glad I found a message board like this one.

Thanks Whenhen, it would be great if she goes there. Its the first school we visited where she was telling me on the walk to the car “I want to live in that dorm. we need to buy me a bike with a basket, things like that”. We got to meet our admission rep for our area and she was very encouraging. Of course everyone says “where” because they havn’t heard of Truman but I just tell them its a really good school in MO that we’re excitied about. Its interesting because theres a thread on CC where people talk about their states schools and Truman is always considered high by those from MO.

Taddy you didn’t say where your from but it seems it might be Calif? I went to Long Beach State in the 80’s and at that time it seemed like mostly a commuter school. I’m from San Francisco and there seemed to be a lot of students at SF State that lived on campus but went home (mostly east bay) on the weekend. Both myself, husband, and brother in-law did the CC to either UC or state system and saved lots of money. I was a huge slacker in HS but found my feet in college and really got good grade while playing softball. I wish your son the best, good luck.

Is it summer yet??? School’s out here mid-June. A looooong couple of weeks left.

I don’t who should be taking Valium–me or the junior ;-)? SAT retake on Sat., finals coming up, add loads of after-school practices, and you’ve got a super-stressed out kid (and mom who has to deal with the stressed out kid…).

Happy for those of you who have started summer break. Hang in there for those who still have 2 or 3 weeks to go!

A few months ago I told my son’s guidance counselor I would need a valium pump to get through my son’s high school experience! Glad I’m not the only one who may benefit from occasional sedation! Good luck to your S and all the other test takers this Saturday. Finally we are seeing the light at the end of the Junior year tunnel!

Classes ended yesterday, and finals start today for my son. One today, two plus a take-home due on Monday and one on Tuesday. He’ll be so happy when they are done.

Debating whether to make him visit some colleges over the next two weeks. He isn’t going to want to, but I want him to work on applications over the summer. We could wait until late August or early fall…just have to figure it out.

I want to take him to visit Earlham in Indiana, and Bowling Green and maybe Baldwin Wallace in Ohio. Any thoughts on those schools would be appreciated…especially Baldwin Wallace since I had never heard of it until his College Counselor suggested it a couple of weeks ago.

K2 is finished with finals.
Tom is SAT
Next week is ACT

Hope to clean up “the list” after those two exams and the transcript

Fingers crossed.

Summer plans in place–math course and a camp for the EC

This is K2s journey and so although I might have thoughts/plans about steps, it’s not my life nor my choices…
We all know you cannot MAKE a kid do anything…

The summer math teacher believes like everyone else does that K2 is far smarter than performance suggests…
Go figure!!!

As far as sedation—glad I am “of age” for martinis!

Boy. Cannot wait until next week - time to vent…if preparing for APUSH all year long wasn’t bad enough, my son has to do a major research project ! Ugh. draft do yesterday which he did not pass in…no motivation…major project for honors biology due on Monday and various other end of the year you know what! Classes end next week. Today he is taking 3 subject next - next week ACT. He has a 90 average -is considered a B at his school ( 7 point scale) …he is bright but not a great student…hates to do all the little things that for some brings their grades up for him - brings his grade down …simple things like a timeline in history -0 …notes 0…very frustrating…although he loves standardized test…usually does very well…1430/2020 on the May SAT -I thought it was great! He thought it was terrible - wants 2300…I keep telling him focus in your grades at school but he is who he is and only cares about lol…what he cares about…

Last ACT/SAT for D this morning. She said “This is it. No more…I’m done.” I guess it’ll be a wrap in a few hours. Hoping the math tutoring the last few months was worth the cost…

Cheers! Good luck to all those taking the SAT today.

Up early, it is going to be another hot day in Maine! It is hard to believe we hit 90 on June 1st.
My S took 3 subject test yesterday …he hopes he did OK -Lit and Bio were harder than he thought they woud be. He felt math was pretty easy but he was tired …said he would never take 3 again…

Still waiting to hear from Muhlenberg for summer Brain Camp. If he gets in …we will plan our summer college visits around his week there.

Today he needs to finish 2 papers …APUSH and Bio…fun day! Tonight sailing team’s end of year celebration. Looking forward to June 14th…
