Parents of the HS class of 2014 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Onlyonemom–Great play-by-play of your tour including highlights and lowlights! Looking forward to our 11-day journey in late August. Adjusting our ETAs and adding hours to Google maps time estimates to account for summer/holiday traffic. Main concern is long slogs in uncomfortable compact rental car…

@onlyonemom: Great report! I will need to look at Drew. Interesting feedback.

In light of my D’s junior year grades (technically I don’t even qualify for this board since she brought home a cumulative GPA of 2.99), we have changed up strategy a little. We removed a few colleges that she was a long shot at anyway and have decided to add in a few out of state universities. Her ACT score helps her in that area.

We are flying out to Iowa this weekend and attending the Iowa State open house and then traveling to Iowa City to spend the day at the University of Iowa. They are both bigger than what we had hoped for but they are both highly regarded and not too big, relative to some of their peers. We will also take a trip up to see the University of Maine.

onlyonemom, glad to hear you liked Conn College! Sorry we couldn’t give you beautiful weather, though…ugh, it’s hot! Thanks for your detailed trip report. I keep hearing that “we don’t walk backwards” thing at tours. Kind of a gimmick IMO, who cares how the guides walk?! Just give me someone who knows the school and has some energy.

BobbyCT, good luck with your trips! Are you seeing the Orono campus of UMaine?

We’re headed to PA and OH next week to see Ursinus, Allegheny, Ohio Wesleyan and COW. Curious to see if D embraces the midwest or continues to subscribe to the “cows and corn” mentality :)

@LisaK216: Yes, we are going to the UMaine in Orono. I will love to hear your impressions on Allegheny. It was one of the colleges we took off her list when her grades came out. Ohio Wesleyan was interesting when we visited there with my son years ago. We liked it. Good luck on your trip!

Bobby- good luck on your trip to Iowa.

BobbyCt - you may want to check out Hobart and William Smith in NY. Also, on your way up to UMO you may want to stop at University of New England in Biddeford Maine - right on the water. Strong in the sciences and health related fields. Good luck on your road trip!

LisaK216,

Ursinus and Allegheny are on our list as potentials and I would also love to hear about your impression of the schools.

To Everyone going on college road trips …remember to enjoy the process!

Packing for our 1 week road trip starting tomorrow. Heading to Elon, High Point, Queens, possibly Roanoke, and James Madison on the trip back home. Staying at my SIL’s in Richmond on Thursday evening. We’re also planning a side trip for a couple of days to OBX. Will be staying at Shutters on the Banks. My DD14 is also taking her high school friend along. Wish us luck!

^^^

Sounds like a fun trip! Remember to enjoy the process!

BobbyCT and onlyonemom, I’ll be glad to update you on Allegheny. Not sure what D’s chances are there, but luckily they value the interview and D has quite a personality. She needs to score points where she can. Bobby, I’m interested to see OWU. D doesn’t want to go to Ohio, but I am impressed with the many study abroad options the school has.

She’s been working on her resume and essay this week, but so far not much progress.

Hi, I have been reading this thread for a while but never posted before. My rising senior goes to a gigantic test-in public school in Brooklyn, NYC. Her school doesn’t rank. She’s got 4 APs so far, 2 more next year, 3s and 4s. Her weighted (110% for the APs) average is around 86. She got a 27 on the ACT and will take it again in September. Her top school choice so far is Binghamton University, part of the State U. of NY. I graduated from there back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. She did a couple of astronomy programs there last summer and the year before, during which she stayed on campus.

Last winter we loaded up the car with friends and visited Binghamton and Cornell, which she also loved but I think she figures it’s beyond reach. Her grades are well outside Bing’s published middle 50 percent (91-97) but I have volunteered for the school at college fairs and I was told by the NYC rep: “Your daughter goes to Brooklyn Tech, right? We KNOW about Brooklyn Tech!” So I am cautiously optimistic. My hope is that all the other schools on our list know about Brooklyn Tech too! And it is true that there is no grade inflation there, none whatsoever!

I adopted her from China and she chose to take Chinese as her high school languaqe. She really struggled but passed (barely) the state test so she’ll no longer have it to drag down her average.

She is definitely a science-and-math girl and as of right now, her career choice is to do bio research. Before that she thought she might want to be a neurologist (decided she didn’t want to deal with patients), or a biomedical engineer. She wants a college that is bigger than her high school (5500 students) and a school with less than 60 percent female students, not more than 5-7 hours from home but more than 1.5 hours from home.

We are planning this trip for the first week in August:
Syracuse U.
Rochester Institute of Technology–an overnight program for rising seniors. I want her to have the experience of staying on another campus besides Binghamton
SUNY Buffalo
University of Rochester
and the following maybes depending on where the trip ends:
SUNY Environmental–a small state college on the campus of Syracuse U.
SUNY Oneonta–definitely a safety but with an interesting bio department
Rensallaer Polytechnical Institute
Worcester Polytechnical Institute

Also on our list is Lehigh, which we already visited and where she will likely attend a diversity weekend for seniors in the fall. She was a little concerned about how undiverse it seemed when we were there.

Oh, and did I mention that she is the holder of a learner’s permit, not allowed to drive within NYC limits, and she would like to drive all 50000000 miles of this trip once we leave the city limits? She’s a pretty good driver but not as good as she thinks she is.

Wish us luck!

Welcome! And good luck - you seem to have a good list of schools to consider!

Hi Oldmom,

Welcome to the group! I think you have a good list. You might also want to consider UConn- it is suppose to have a good Biomedical engineering department. We considered it but my son is leaning towards a sm LAC. He was interested in becoming a Neurosurgeon but has now changed his mind and also wants to do research. He wants to major in Neuroscience.

Good luck on your road trip!

Morning All

Popping in to say hello and later in the day or two I will scroll back to catch up.
Haven’t been here since July 5 when I drove to my parents to be with my mom in her last days. We had thought we were losing her before and she courageously fought for a long time. She passed on the 16th. I did a eulogy on Saturday.

On a happier note, my older K1 is home this summer (now about healed from a sports related injury) Celebrating birthday 20 today.

K2 is home from being away with EC related events. Had been taking a private tutor/math class and the school schedule is finally in order. Finally. Now I can have K2 shop for the school books.

Also a pre-read from one of the schools on the list was positive. K2 was very excited about that.
There are several priority apps that will be done this week.

One school on the list is going to be too much of a reach and so I am thankful the pre pre-read has lets us know the chances are slim. Too many other options to fret over that. K2 is a legacy there and if K2 really wants to go for it–we will do that…

Another pre-read is in the works and is K2s present #1…and so time will tell.

Lastly we are still waiting for K1s financial package for this yr. DH is concerned that despite aid the last 2 yrs that K1 might not get aid this yr beyond work-study (if that) I am hoping K1 gets at least work study ad it is related to major/career and important.

Feeling out of sorts having been gone for weeks. Not sleeping much and I suspect just when I start to get my head around being here–I will be back to dad’s to empty mom’s drawers and closets. One of mom’s BFF gave me a sterling bracelet from Pandora with a single breast cancer bead. I didn’t have any pandora and this is a perfect thing–mom’s BFFs all have one–we feel join in a type of sisterhood. kwim?

hugs all around.
xoxo

Thanks, onlyonemom. I don’t think we could afford the out-of-state tuition at UCONN. We toured there last year and my daughter liked it fine, but when I did the online calculator, it was just too high, and they don’t give need-based financial aid to out-of-state students. If my kid goes to a school inside NYS, she’ll be eligible for a $5k grant that can really make a difference.

Yes, absolutely. They will all know about Tech … and Stuyvesant … and Bronx Science.

oldmom4896-

Make sure you go to the Dinosaur BBQ while you are in Rochester (if you like that sort of thing).

My husband and I attended the U of R and now live in one of the suburbs of Rochester. Let me know if you have any questions or need suggestions of things to do in the area :)

fogfog, I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear FogFog,

I am sorry to hear about your Mom. The pandora bracelet is a wonderful gift that I am sure you will cherish for years to come. My heart goes out to you and your family.

When you are feeling up to it …could you let me know what a pre-read is?

Take care

Fogfog- sorry to hear about your mom… take care <<<>>>

Fogfog,
Hugs to you, and prayers/wishes for rest. It will come.
