crowlady, that’s funny! We also visited both in the same week. A friend wrote: friends of my daughter visited RPI (all girls) and said later that it would be like living in Sheldon and Leonard’s room on The Big Bang Theory.

My daughter goes to a NYC high school that is pretty nerdy, mostly boys, big focus on engineering, and she absolutely loves it. I am sure she’d be happy at RIT, which has a kind-of similar student body and vibe. But I think she’d be out of her league at RPI. (Not that she’s a shoo-in to get in, and even if she does, I think it’s extremely unlikely that she’d get enough aid to make it possible for her to attend.)

Congrats expat and all other recent acceptances!! D was notified yesterday that she’s in at one of her rolling admission safeties, Oregon State. Will await info on any merit $$$. D has 0.5% interest in going there at the moment, but I love Corvallis. Easy four hour drive down the I-5, no mountain passes to cross, nice college town, etc, etc. etc. Unfortunately, I’m not the one going to college… Can mid-March get here sooner, please? I’m ready for a decision–NOW. Thank you. :((

Wondering aloud … has anyone’s student applied to / heard from St. Mary’s College of MD?
It’s the only school of interest we’ve not yet heard from, and we would’ve expected to by now.

@expatCanuck St. Mary’s was on our list but was one essay too many for my S to complete. They even extended the deadline for him and that didn’t help! I’m keeping it on the list for S16.

@oldmom4896 RPI is a reach for my S too. We know a young woman who thrived there (joined an a capella group, started at Apple last Fall) and I have a female friend on the faculty. They seem to care about including undergrads in research. I’m interested because of their new Jefferson Project which is doing cool things at Lake George combining environmental science and technology. Too bad I’m not the one who gets to go to college!

Congrats on the admissions @crowlady and @expat! @oldmom – I love a cappella but it’s a good thing that singing on key isn’t a requirement for college as no one in this family would attend. :)

Yay for your D, MomofWon! You’ll come close to Headquarters if you make that drive Spygirl isn’t thrilled with OSU either. I, too, love Corvallis, but DD is allergic to grass so not the best choice.

My better half just called – the ‘fat envelope’ from St. Mary’s College of Maryland arrived.

When expatSon and I visited during an open house this past August, I was really impressed by this school, and expatSon said that his then-first-choice had just been ‘demoted’ to ‘High Interest’.

We just may have a winner. If expatSon attends either Wooster or SMCM, I’ll be quite pleased.

That just about completes our dance card. Only UMass Amherst remains to weigh in.

As far as I know, everything’s still in the mix. I expect expatSon to research course availability / prerequisites during spring break. Much will hinge on that. Neither he nor I want him spending undue cycles on courses that exploit his weaknesses – we want to be able to craft a curriculum that will play to his strengths.

@crowlady congrats to your son - RIT is a great school. I wanted my S to apply but he wanted sm LAC …but at the last min. applied to UROC, UVM and Clarkson …it will be interesting to see where he ends up!

@onlyonemom LOL, at the last minute my son applied to one small LAC. We’re still waiting for 4 more decisions but things may be starting to gel.

Crowlady …too funny…we are waiting to hear from 8 schools!

How do they really know what is the best school for them or what to major in …it is so hard…my S was telling about his time at Medical Explorers this week - they visited the simulation lab ( at local teaching hospital). He went into great detail about how much he enjoyed it. He explained that one of the high tech dummies was specifically for cardiac,-simulating different heart sounds to interpret the meaning of various heart sounds, he was pumped -(no pun intended …he was excited to tell me that he was able to interpret the different heart sounds…but as he went on he shifted to being more interested in the programming / design aspect of the high tech. dummies. At one time he was really interested in Robotics but moved away from because it became more about programming than design. However, this one evening, sparked a new interest in programming and who knows where it will lead him…

Excellent timing for upcoming college decision??? D was in OH this weekend with several teammates and their flights were canceled last night due to snow. In the air now, but missing another day of school. Because D is strongly considering going to a college in the Midwest or NY vs. safeties close to home in the PNW, wondering if the reality of snow, and lots of it, along with canceled flights and accompanying hassles, will influence college location decision. The reality of weather is something 17 and 18 year-olds really need to think about before making that choice. D has grown up in a temperate climate, not too hot or cold, but with lots of drizzle. Stay tuned for feedback.

@momofwon - I chuckled when I read your post. We live in the South and when D began her college search she was interested in attending school in the NE. Despite her insistence on wanting snow and cold, I knew it was impossible for her to imagine the reality. As this uncharacteristically cold winter progressed, her college choices, while still providing 4 seasons, changed to more moderate climates.

@momofwon If I lived in the Pacific Northwest, I can’t imagine leaving for any reason – except perhaps to go snorkling off of the Turks & Caicos. Or the Galapagos.
