Unless your child gets an unexpected call off a waitlist, I think we can call the college search process a wrap! Congrats to all who took this journey with me. I can’t believe H, D, and I started touring colleges informally after freshman year, and now D will be headed off to her #1 school August 19th. Still have prom (5/31), graduation (6/16), and last tournaments (6/29-7/6) to go before the college craziness commences.

Thanks to all for hanging in there and knowing that this really isn’t an end, but just the start to another great adventure called life. Cheers!

Congratulations everyone ! Expat -so happy to here your S made his choice! My S made his choice too…I would never had thought a year ago that my S would have ended up at UVM Honors college but he is very happy with his choice.

Hi all…

Last year’s 3.0-3.3 group complied a list of all the schools their kids got into. I think it would be nice for us to do as well for the upcoming groups to see. I went back a few pages and pulled names of people who recently announced decisions. Sorry if I missed anyone – I’m sure I did!

Maybe each of us could also add the other schools our kids got into and whether they received merit. I only did my D’s schools. Also, there were a few folks who posted recently that I didn’t see a decision from…@EnglishLit, @fogfog, @thingamajig, @Helena51, want to add to the list?

I’ve been embedded in the Musical Theatre and Theatre/Drama forums for the past 10 months. I went back to page two of this thread to read my first entry. I wrote about my bright son’s strong to very middling academics, and how I hoped he succeeded in getting into a BFA Musical Theatre or Acting program because his heart was in the theatre, not in straight academics. Happy to say he did get into three BFA programs artistically and academically. He chose Otterbein University, BFA Acting. This is a lovely university in Westerville, Ohio. I never heard of this school until this past year. It is extremely selective artistically, less so academically, so I would say it is a perfect fit, lol . I won’t list all the schools son applied to, but of 15 applications, he was accepted academically to 14 (Carnegie Mellon was a no artistically, and would have certainly been a “Are you kidding me??” academically if he had not been going for a Musical Theatre major.) Son received many merit scholarship offers from schools, and Otterbein awarded him generous merit and talent scholarships, knocking the cost down to comparable to our in-state, Yippee!

@onlyonemom - I’m sure your son will have a terrific time at UVM. The daughter of our school’s college counselor (who has close to 20 years of experience) just finished her freshman year there.

Well the long, long ride is over for our kids…the decisions made…and now on to the next chapter. I must say I have truly appreciated all the insight and advice I received on these forums. The knowledge I gained was incredible and helped me and my D tremendously. I wish everyone and their child much success as they travel along the path of college life!!!

For those of you whose children are disappointed with where they are going to college, how did you deal with them…say to them, help them with that disappointment or embarrassment. I see this in my future. DS finished this last semester with a D and a D+ (Algebra 3 and Chem). He was tutored quite a lot and gave it his best shot right until the end as their finals are worth 20% of the grade (horrible!), as he really wanted the state academic honors diploma (nothing can be less than a C-). He has a 3.08 weighted GPA end of Junior year. He only has a 1410 SAT and is thinking about taking the ACT. He has ADHD inattentive, plus in my opinion, just really isn’t quite as smart academically as the average person. I really feel the SAT is a cousin to the IQ test. He is a really hard worker, whip smart socially and has a lot of common sense. Flagship school is out, even maybe the 2nd tier level school. He might get into the flagship urban campus, or a directional school. There is a chance he will have to do this. He knows he can transfer.

However, that doesn’t mean he won’t feel dejected, bad about himself, embarrassed…all that stuff. For those of you who went thru this…how did you handle it with your child and how did he/she react, come to grips with it and move on? Or are you still having to talk with them? I’m going to also put this in the 2013 class thread. Thanks for any help.

^^^ Sorry conmama, I don’t have any answers for you, but my advice is you might want to start a new thread in the Parent’s Forum. You might get better traction for these very important questions you raise.

Conmama, your son sounds a lot like mine. Is he identifying the colleges he is interested in? Mine isn’t, but has expressed some general criteria such as available majors, size, climate, etc. I have been taking the lead in identifying schools that fit those criteria and that he is likely to be able to get into. I then try to find something about those schools that pique his interest, be it sports, clubs, nearby recreation. It helps to redirect his interest away from schools he can"t get into. Also, in our community there are a lot of kids who are going to public and directional universities in addition to those going to Ivies and NESCACS, so he knows he is not alone. You may get some more help if you post on a 3.0 to 3.3. GPA thread, although most of the kids talked about seem to have better test scores than yours and mine.

Too lat eto edit the above - I meant the 2015 3.0 to 3.3 thread.

I should note, my son wasn’t a 3.0-3.3. I don’t want that to be misleading.

Thank you all for joining me on my child’s college selection adventure. I’ve learned so much from this forum and have appreciated all of your support, wisdom, encouragement, and advice. D graduates on Monday and will then start preparing for her next four exciting years in NY. I can’t wait to see how everything unfolds. It will be bittersweet helping my only child move 3,000 miles away. I’m so happy she found what looks to be a perfect fit college, but I’m a little sad that letting go will mean many months between visits.

Congrats to all and thank you! I probably won’t check in very often because it’s time for me to move on too. New adventures await now that my 18 years of child-centered activities and volunteering are coming to a close.

All the best.
