Parents of the HS Class of 2014

sydsim, sometimes my feeble sense of humor is downright undetectable. Being from PA, I view paying $5 to get out of NJ a bargain. ;)

Ben Franklin Bridge got us too. When we toured in February, we had to get from Philly to Baltimore; I told H we wanted 95 South; he ignored my direction and headed over the bridge, into Camden, for the NJ Turnpike. “The turnpike is 95!” So for a solid half hour we were heading to Cape May.

It’s amazing we made it.

My d and I were heading up to NJ last weekend to visit my mom. A trip I’ve made a million times. I let her drive and we were talking about taking the DelMemBr - bridge from delaware to nj. She seemed good, and I looked at my ipad and did a little work with emails. Then I heard - we’re in Pennsylvania! Uh - oh - we were supposed to go from Delaware to NJ. I didn’t bother having the gps on since I know the way so well - but I never went through PA to get “home”. She got a good lesson in city driving and finding your way around when you don’t know where you are.

Initiatelaunch, that completely went over my head! I feel ya! I’m a Philly native/NJ implant though!

Yes! The BF Bridge did me in. :)

We did Penn’s info session today but skipped the tour per DD14
as I expected, I think it may be a little too city for her.

I have to say, the info session was pretty informative
the AdCon gave some pretty detailed information regarding what Penn looks for in an applicant. (Which would probably apply to every selective school, but it was great to hear it all spelled out.)

We’re in RI right now - we’ll do Brown tomorrow.

Hope everyone is having safe travels!

I hope the weather is turning out better for all of you touring in the NE than it started out!

Keep the school reports coming, not sure we’ll make a trip up that direction anytime soon.

I know we have heard it before, but I’d love to hear it again. Wanna share your notes?
S visited Swarthmore last week and ended up on UPENN campus the night before visiting friends. He said ‘No schools in the middle of a city like that unless it’s Boston/Cambridge’ He also doesn’t want schools ‘way, way far away from everything’

He saw Olin today and loved it. I wish they had early decision.
I wish that the March 28 SAT results were out already.

Good news - DS did a practice SAT Subject Math 2 test yesterday and got an 800. That’s much better than last year’s 680!
PS

Enjoy Brown! I totally loved it. I was ready to move to Providence after that visit with my D.

Funny, we also visited UPenn today, 2:30 info session, very good
but they advised all to go find tour person on 33rd and Walnut, a group of us waited but no student showed. No biggie. My s loved the campus, friendly social vibe. Said Duke was intimidating by comparison. He loves the urban setting and sat in on an evolutionary biology class which he thought was kind of basic, huh?

Kamamom did you drive to Providence today? We’ll be there Saturday

Sent from my Nexus 7 using CC

I may have more time tonight and I’ll list what I can remember about Penn. :)

@myturnnow
yes, we’re doing Brown today - and then Williams College tomorrow.

For those of you visiting brown this week, you won’t get a sense of the campus energy because the school is on spring break. My oldest kid is a sophomore there and loves it. We were there on Monday and the campus felt deserted. So keep in mind that you won’t get a feel for its wonderful, high energy vibe.

Well
she loved Brown. The info session was a bit lacking as the adcom spent the first 15 minutes telling a Greek mythology story.

And the tour groups were HUGE and pretty hard to hear the guides.

But she loved Brown. Loved loved LOVED it.

We’re in Williamstown right now - actually in North Adams. We’ll tour Williams College tomorrow and then drive to Cornell.

Whew! I’m emotionally tired from reading the 2013 High School thread! Anybody else keeping up with it (other than some of our '14ers that belong to that thread as well)? Such exciting times for them as the final schools are releasing results. That will be us next year!

Hi KaMaMom and all, new here, but had a similar experience as KaMaMom: Kid was not thrilled with the city’ishness of Penn, but loved Brown. We were actually lucky with our Brown tour guide. He was very funny, had a booming voice, and our group was on the small size. Very nice, comfy feeling campus. We were also considering Williams, but had second thoughts because of the small size. May visit in the summer. Will await your notes KaMaMom. Has anyone else been to Williams?

Arrrggghhh
anyone else having trouble getting the scores from collegeboard right now?

^yes! “The system is unable to load the information due to system error.” And they list this address under “contact us”: 45 Columbus Ave NY NY 10023

Is that a fake place? Like 123 Main St? Because I’m heading over there right when I get off the train. Maybe some kid on the Upper West Side hacked into the College Board system. Bad idea. Don’t mess with this mom.

eyemamom – I’ll try and get your scores too.

Try this:

Worked for us!

Loving the college visit reports - keep 'em rolling!

Totally forgot the SAT scores were coming out today until reading CC this morning! DS11 has been in and out the the ER and hospital twice in the past week for severe sudden onset headache followed by spinal headache caused by spinal tap last Thursday. He’s finally home and hopefully will feel much better this morning after a full nights sleep in his own quiet bed! I know I’m starting to feel human again after some sleep.

Just got the scores through the suggestion above (clicked on the January score link even though she’s never taken them before and that worked).

Scores are definitely NOT what I expected! CR wasn’t what I’d hoped based on the tutoring she’d been doing. Math was okay but not as high as wished for and I think she can do better. Writing was the highest and well above the level I expected or was hoping for which was a total surprise! Especially since that was the one section her tutor really wasn’t working with her on and she was really concerned about the essay part. And it was almost 200 points higher than her PSAT writing. Maybe she did really well on the essay. Who knows! Maybe the ACT will be a better test for her.

Got DD’s test scores this morning. Jumped from 1590 to 1750. Very happy about the jump. She’s definitely going to take one more crack at it in October. Really hoping to get her scores above a 600 each.
