Parents of the HS class of 2015 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

As I posted a while ago, BHG’s GPA is now above this thread, but I feel at home here, and am staying to the very end! Here’s to our DC ROCKING the 2015 ADmissions cycle! If you need help, PLEASE ask. We’re all here to help. Since some of you do not visit the regular 2015 thread, I will double post over here unless the mods tell me to stop.

If anyone is looking for LACs for a DS, check out Goucher College in MD. Actually, check out any LAC that that is lop-sided with a female:male ratio greater than 60:40, as being a male is a hook.

You can calculate the UWGPA from the transcript. Do the grades get reported by semester or by yr? Assuming by sem, then take scores for each class and divide it by number of classes taken on a cumulative basis (add up all for the 6 sems of HS and divide by the number of classes over the 6 sems of HS).
A = 4.00, a- 3.67, b+ 3.33, b 3.00, b- 2.67 etc.

DS is holding steady at 3.2 UWGPA, 3.45 Wgpa with 4 AP classes.

Junior year is winding down and next week is finals.

The finish line is near–I thought I wanted it to end quickly, but I not so sure now. It means that she is one step closer leaving the nest.

Next year will be the biggest roller coaster ride…I just have to remember this is the final ride for this period of her life so I am going to try to enjoy it!!! I just hope that she enjoys too

@Hoosier96 - I totally agree. -Finals next week - last ones that probably really “count” that much. Unlike many here, my twin sons are both still in this GPA range. If anything, we’re on the very lower end of the range and holding. I honestly think my one son will end up at 3.000000 and my other at about 3.08-3.1 at the end of this semester. Very much hoping both just pick/get in to their schools this summer/fall and we can relax about grades a bit. Then it’s just the money…

@kmanshouse but isn’t it great that you have found your sons schools that fit them not the other way around!!!

Just around the corner will be another surprise, just as it was when they were little, every day brought something new into our/yours life

For one son, I think we have. He really liked BGSU and their offerings at their Art School. It’s a good academic match - if anything, he may be in the upper quartile if their freshman profile, but not so high that it’s not a match. The other one is more of a wild card still, but I’m hoping by October 1st, that will be done, too.

Finals are next week. I can’t wait for the semester to be over.

Son’s grades are reported based on the numerical grade system. Then the transcript lists the grade scale as such: A=90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, F=0-69. What grade point should I use for A, B and C, etc? A= 4 or 3.67 or the average of the two numbers?

Determine Course Grade On The 4.0 Scale
Numerical Score as Percent of Maximum Letter Grade Scaled Grade
90 - 100% A 4.0
80 - 89% B 3.0
70 - 79% C 2.0
60 - 69% D 1.0
<59% F 0

Some colleges use +/- but many don’t.
Some calculate AP/ Duel/ honors with weight.
For example
USF: honors .5
AP/IB/ 1.0
So this will result in a higher GPA

You need to look at your college profile to see what grade scale they send with your transcripts.

After you do this look to see if the colleges your are applying to recalculate.
Most will tell you the scale or criteria they use to recalculate the gpa.

I hope this helps

Most college that recalculate GPA only use core academic classes: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Language.

@Hoosier96-Thanks for the information.

It is a mystery to me how colleges recalculate the GPA. Like you posted, some colleges gives weight to Honors and/or APs while some don’t. What I am trying to figure out is what GPA S should put in for those schools that allow self-report on the applications. For example, Iowa State uses Regent Admission Index (self-report GPA, rank, ACT and number of core classes taken) to determine admission. Anyone knows if they give weight to H or APs and how much weight?

The GPA is out of 4 so it’s not weighted then plug in your numbers.

Here is the conversion for a letter scale (A to F) and a 0-100 scale to a 4.00 scale.
Again, this is to calculate UWGPA.

The above post looks pretty accurate - and for any honors/AP course you add 1 point as long as it was a C-minus or better.

I know that our HS has the weighted GPA on the transcript. We are just going to have the counselor send the transcript. If the college wants to recalculate, that’s up to them. I believe the places we are looking at don’t recalculate anyway.

Some colleges allow applicants to self-report stat and if criteria met, students receive confirmations of admisssion within a few days. Official transcript and score reports are not required unless students decide to enroll at the school.

Yeah, I guess they are all different. BGSU wants my son’s actual transcript once junior year is complete.

The grading system YohoYoho posted is the one used by BHG’s school. They do not weigh honors classes, and do not offer AP, although all honors classes are AP level.

The above, is our also, but there is no A+; our school doesn’t weight either and all classes are taught at the honors level and most at the college level. Our school just started adding AP classes; but,our teachers are in the thought that it has dumb down the curriculum.

The only reason for AP’s classes is because the state has gone to different types of diplomas and the formula for these include AP.

I suspect the above is also what D’s school uses. I wouldn’t know about the A+ (ah, no need for me to know). D’s school is an ordinary big suburban high school, so honors classes are weighted with an additional 0.5 and AP classes are add a weight of 1.0.
