I read that the President’s house was infested with bats, actually - but those are rats with wings, so…
I cannot remember the name of the dorm we toured but it was on the West Green, I think, and we were told it was on the slate to be renovated soon. Did not see a phone booth - the current students probably need to be told what that is, lol - but there were permanent window-style air conditioners built into the walls. The carpet looked like it was about fifty years old. My D is such trooper about this kind of thing, she said, after the tour, “Well, the dorms are old and dirty, but it’s only for a few years”.
The rooms were big, though, and that’s what D liked about them, and she liked that the lounge space was spacious.
She also was happy to hear that one of the newly renovated dining halls will have an all-vegetarian/vegan station.
Although it seems from my own research that veg options re adequate at most campuses - but this one at OU would be quite the luxury, an entire station! We were pleased to find Athens to be veg friendly as well.
D16 hit the submit button on 5 of her Common App schools tonight (College of Wooster, U of Puget Sound, Seton Hall, Drexel and University of the Sciences).
Now just need her to finish up on the few apps that really matter with the “Why I want to be a ___________” Essay. Which she says she will write next weekend because she has a marching band contest this weekend.
And to get the teachers to submit their recommendations that she requested nearly 3 weeks ago…
@labegg That is great! I know that it will be a huge relief once the remaining apps are complete.
We have been working on the Common App information all evening. Then I found out that my son did not give his counselor the recommendation form. Ugh…She said it would take a few weeks for her to complete the recommendation letter. We are still waiting on the teacher recommendations too. I will be so happy when all of this is over.
@allboyz I can’t wait for things to slow down either. Waiting for the acceptances should be a breeze compared to the pace these kids have had to keep up with.
It is amazing that the kids are able to get it all done. Surely being able to juggle college application process on top of senior courseloads with AP’s and EC’s and the social life of a hs senior ought to be proof enough to Universities that kids will succeed in college?
@carolinamom2boys Have you noticed how long it takes a teacher recommendation request to change to complete? or how do you know when the GC has actually finished with a secondary school report/counselor recommendation
Also, don’t know if your school district uploaded prior admissions to your system…if there is any historical data, have you found it accurate?
@labegg My son uses it more than I do, but from what he says it seems to take several days for status to change. I don’t know if that’s because it takes the GC that long to complete something orbit takes that long for the system to update.
So, D logged onto Ohio U’s online portal today, as they sent her a letter in the mail telling her to set up a new account to check application status… Well, it says she is “admitted.” !!
However - we are still both leery as… her GC has apparently NOT sent in the GC form yet.
But, D tells me OU has all the info they need, excepting GC’s express recommendation - they’ve received transcript, ACT score, and D says she had to list all of her current courses on the app.
Anyway, there is a box for “Accept/Decline” next to the “Admitted” so as of now, I’m assuming she’s been admitted, and the GC form is just a formality! I hope I’m right.
Btw, D emailed GC to ask if she had sent the form in yet, and GC said No, but will have it mailed in before the end of the week. That’s how we know they haven’t received it yet. Now, just waiting for GC to mail that, and waiting on Ball State.
D still needs to finish SIU-Carbondale’s app and we plan to visit their Open House in November.
Believe it…my D16’s GC has still not sent in the secondary school report and GC rec. We have received the acceptance letter and the portal changed. CONGRATULATIONS FUTURE BOBCAT!
Congrats to all! My S has not hit the submit button to a single school but I’m pushing as hard as I can. We have Naviance, but the school is handling letter and transcript requests on paper – I’m not sure what it will look like when LORs are actually available or submitted. When we did this two years ago Naviance was so new it was not used at all for apps.
Today my S received his class rank (96th out of 307 or something) and his NM Commended certificate (demonstrating he was one of the top four in the school, likely #2). Let’s just say the latter helped make up for the former.
Last week and this week have been crazy and there were a few things D had to aim for “just get it done” instead of making sure it was done well. Currently doing what amounts to an arts and craft project for AP Psych, has a test in that class tomorrow that she still needs to study for, started a new job tonight, etc. She also has to work all day Sat. so plans to use the four day weekend for a college visit are probably out the window. I wish she had tried harder to get a job in the summer! Timing is not ideal.
She still has exactly one app in, but she requested transcripts last week (all electronic, but who knows how long it takes to submit them - they only promise to get them out within 30 days), and requested more ACT score reports. She filled out the annoying CSU Mentor app and is waiting for me to fork over the application fees for a couple of schools (they won’t look at it until early December anyway). I’m imagining a total of eight or 10 schools with a file for D that has transcripts, ACT scores and no application until the last day of the Early Action period, but maybe that’s normal.
D16 has about 3 more apps to complete, all for early entry BS/DPT programs. She texted me today and asked if she could skip school on Monday to work on the “Why I want to be a PT” essays for those schools. Monday is the first day of the testing week for the first 9 weeks grading period.
I told her it is a little early in the year to be suffering from Senioritis. She has not tests on Monday so I have somewhat reluctantly agreed, but said the 3 final apps must be submitted by the end of the day on Monday.
Also heard from a friend that D16’s AP Calculus teacher told all of his classes that they need to be concentrating on submitting college apps “D16 has already been accepted, so you better step it up” and that seeing D16 cry, in his class, when she opened her acceptance email from Pitt has been a highlight of his experience teaching seniors. (That is so sweet!).
Can’t believe that the first 9 weeks is gone. Got a packet home yesterday for ordering cap & gown, graduation announcements etc. This is all moving way to fast!
I love my son’s common app essay, but he’s having a difficult time with one of the school essays. In 250 words or less, tell which super hero power you would like. 250 words isn’t a lot. I looked his essay over and gave him some pointers and told him to meet with his english teacher.
@labegg cap and gown, already? I’m not ready for this!
Kids have a long weekend so I told him to finish his essays. That will be a BIG relief!
@ThreeRedheads Not all schools have additional essays, and some have “questions” not essays, and for some you “unlock” additional essays when choosing majors or honors. It is complicated and hard to keep track!
D’16 has officially finished and submitted all 15 applications.
GC has completed her part of the Common App, 2 letters of recommendation submitted for all her schools (super happy the science teacher got his recommendation done), transcripts are sent, ACT/SAT scores are sent . Just need to confirm that GC has sent everything to the one remaining non common app school.
D’16 does need to submit a video recorded arts supplement of her winter piano recital to the one school she applied to for Music Education by January 15, but I suspect that she will let that app die if she is accepted to her first choice school which we should know my the end of December.
