Parents of the HS Class of 2016 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

@eh1234, sorry that Eckerd didn’t work out. My 2 children went there. Glad she was able to visit. Sometimes a school that looks great on paper is not a good fit when you visit. Best of luck to her.

@eh1234 my older D goes to Colorado State and I have been impressed with the school. Everyone has been very nice, the problems have been small and Fort Collins is a great town. The school does not feel that big and I feel like they are careful with the students. It all seems manageable. My D’s only complaint is that some of the kids aren’t as serious about school as she would like. If you go to visit and don’t rent a car Green Ride will get you anywhere in town from the airport and the Hilton is three blocks from campus has a shuttle that will take you anywhere in a 5 mile radius. At some point you need have to have breakfast or lunch at The Silver Grill - one of my favorite restaurants anywhere.

We all loved the campus @Reckless - it just had a very good vibe. I have some family in Boulder and my MIL has a cabin between Boulder & the Rocky Mountain National Park, so we’ve been out there quite a few times (although only once to Fort Collins.) I was already looking into Green Ride for my D’s orientation visit in June (IF she ever makes a final decision).

Even though D16 seems to have eliminated every school but CSU, she hasn’t given us the go ahead for the enrollment deposit. Maybe she’s waiting for them to assign all of the best housing?

@Reckless I am taking note of The Silver Grill, we may be headed there to tour over spring break.

D16 received her final acceptance today, to Ithaca College BS/DPT program. This B student with average SAT 1650/ACT 26 was accepted to every one of the 12 schools where she applied. So proud of her. I hope this is proof to some parent or kid that it can be done and not to give up hope.

@labegg Awesome! Congrats!

That’s fantastic, @labegg. Must be a great feeling! I know she soured on Ithaca but all in all it is a good example that research and perseverance pays off.

What great news @labegg!

I was so happy for my D’s 7 of 7 results. There is a school for everybody. I’m looking forward to going through this process with S19 with much less stress, knowing that someone will take him even though he’s also a B+ type student who is not into sports and clubs. He’ll find his place.

@labegg and @eh1234 great news for both of you!

I love that this is a topic on here, sometimes you read through all these threads and think every child has about a 4.4 add a 2200 on the SAT
My S 15 was one of those students, my D 16 not so much she has a 3.7 and scored a 1720 on the SAT and has definitely found the right college for her!
I will be going on this journey with my S 21 in a few years he is more like his sister, but now I am armed with a lot of knowledge, which might not be such a good thing for him.

@TwoBoyzOneG1rl I’m sure it will be a good thing that you’ve already got a lot of knowledge when it is is your S21’s turn.

I may have said this before, but it bears repeating. In some ways our B students have more freedom to choose the very best fit that they can, without others second guessing their choices. The super high stats kids have such HUGE expectations on them to apply to lottery schools that make such random selections. I’ve seen these kids face major disappointment after all of their hard work in high school. Or they choose a cheaper school because the family isn’t in a position to be full pay and the top schools don’t provide merit aid.

Not that I’m recommending students aim to be mediocre, but there are clearly many good schools for solid students!

Good morning, yes I still follow and my DS has had a great year so far…he went 6 for 6 with merit not FA and not general discounting  of tution. He is an out layer…he found a “passion” his first semester of his senior year and now is fully invested in his future…a little late to the party but he got there and not by the easy path.
He has decided on Kelly School of Business at IU; consulting economics with a minor in Japanese.

He is most excited about the Japanese then the other half…but it is a start.

@Hoosier96, our son has also found a passion (cinema) and is looking forward to the screen studies program at Temple. I think he recognizes that he may find out when he gets into it more deeply that he may find his interest wane, so it’s a good thing he decided to go with a large university instead of an “artsy” school where he would have fewer alternatives. He’s minoring in math, which he is very good at but less passionate about. We’re hoping he’s one of those students who enjoys college more than high school; he’s been ready to leave HS since sophomore year.

Do any of you know how to get one of these started for the class of 2017? It would be really nice to have that thread going but it doesn’t appear to be a discussion that a member can post under this sub topic.

You might want to ask a moderator to start a Class of 2017 3.0 to 3.3 thread – maybe @Trinity (who posted the notice in 2013 about what names are allowed?). @skieurope started the official acceptances thread for me when I was looking for help so you could try there.

But I will say that the main Class of 2016 has been pretty welcoming of parents of all kinds of students this year. So it may be less necessary to have a separate thread for B students.

I started this thread so long ago - and I remember puzzling over how to do it. I think I finally started it on “Parent Cafe” new discussion, and a mod moved it on over to the correct place.

The “Can we talk about college for the B and C students” thread is very similar to this thread, though it’s not year specific. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1764140-can-we-talk-to-the-b-and-c-students-about-college

The “I got in without a 3.7” thread is relevant as well http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/649604-the-i-got-in-without-a-3-7-gpa-club-p1.html

Thanks, I have seen the other threads, this one just seemed a bit more focused on the parent side (versus the I got in thread). The main thread has been helpful, just not always things that are relatable (i.e. applying to multiple competitive summer programs to boost their chances, that kind of thing). It’s good to see and know about and helpful for S19 but less so for S17.

@eandesmom … I was also wondering how to start a similar thread for the class of 2017 … post back if you figure it out.

I’m also interested in a 2017 parents thread similar to this one @eandesmom @MomStudent2017

Another person interested in a 2017 parents thread @eandesmom .
