Just got a mixed progress report–no A’s, mostly b’s, c’s, and even a surprise d. He seems to be working all the time, much more organized than last year, but always has one test per subject that he blows for some random reason.

Make sure all grades are in. My daughter had a D on her interim but she was absent during a quiz day. She has since taken the quiz and now she has close to an A.

S grades will be posted on Friday. He had a rough start, changed Math class. It’s like night and day from a PIA now back to my guy with a deep blue eyes and a devilish smile
At this point I am in the camp that checking the most demanding course load is just that a check mark.
Hope everyone has a nice Wednesday and the PSAT goes well all.

PSAT for us is Saturday. First encounter for S - didn’t take last year. Good luck to all with it!

PSAT is Wednesday, and the end of the first quarter is Friday. Three As, 2 Bs, a C and a low D thus far. I’m hoping the D is a transcription error, and she didn’t really get a 10/100 on her last test in that class…Otherwise, D16 is going to need to learn to love the community college, I think.

Ack. December ACT is in about seven more weeks. Which, because her weeks are already so packed, in my kid’s life is more like “seven more days” to prep for the test. Well, actually, about “seven more hours.” Maybe 14. Sigh. Good thing she’s planning to retest in April and June for the ACT. She just doesn’t have that junior-year balancing act mastered yet of school, homework, activities, leisure pursuits, and … test prep. Today I asked her to schedule time over the coming weeks for test prep and she suggested about two hours a week. Hours I knew would be subject to cancellation due to the demands of activities and new friends. Sigh. Fret. Wringing of hands. Wishing for more hours in the day. Remembering: There’s always gap year!

She did get all As on the first quarter grade report. But, I’m not sure the center can hold! We’ll see.

How did the PSAT go for those that took it Wednesday? My S takes it Saturday, and is totally unconcerned.

@mamaduck my dear S “omitted” 8 so who knows he didn’t fare well Sophomore year R 70 M 64 and W 47; I’m just hoping to keep the R and M and praying for W to get to 60.
His first quarter grades are do out tomorrow; I asked if there were any surprises I should be aware of, his response: They wouldn’t be surprises then b-(

I have not been on College Confidential in a while. My son is struggling with Algebra II. They have a new teacher and now majority of the class is failing. The school is getting complaints nonstop. The principal sat in to watch the teacher during class. I do not have any idea how this will end up. At any rate, my son has been seeking out help elsewhere with tutoring and by watching videos online. He still has an F in the class. She is allowing all of the class to retake the only test. If he gets a higher score on that then it should raise his grade. Fingers crossed. All of his other grades are fine. He has 3 A’s and 3 high B’s and then of course the F. So frustrating. Hoping and praying that he is able to pull that grade back up. He can’t afford to have his GPA dip any lower…I feel bad for him because I do believe he is trying. Stressful…

@allboyz my S dropped down from Alg2with Trig to just Alg2 he was struggling because of the fast pace and it was making his whole take on school UGLY!!! He definitely had a hard time ego wise for this adjustment but after the last quiz 15/16 he no longer feels defeated.
We had a nightmare Geometry last year and we could not have a repeat. Good luck!!!

May I join you? We live in Denmark at present with DS at the international school doing IB Diploma so no GPA but I am guessing around 3.0. Taking the PSAT for which he has done no prep - they don’t offer any and he has no interest in self motivating (of course!). Thinks he’ll take it and see where he stands! Have started with some college visits - spent a week with his sister (a junior at Drew in NJ), they looked at 5 in PA and he loved St Mikes in Vt in the summer.

Hello @happy64 !!! Very nice people on this forum. I enjoy this gpa group the best. I have D’15 and S’16.

We are very busy with D at the current time. She is 8 out 8 on admission so far. I have learned that with truly looking at fit that there are hundreds of schools that would love to have a good hard working B student; that works academically and financially for that student.

So hello again!!!

Welcome Happy!

Funny you mention St Mike’s-- we just got email from them. I’d never heard of them before. I doubt my CCD dropout would be interested in a Jesuit education, but it looked like a great school.

First quarter grades went out this week. Good surprise for D16; one of her projected Bs took an upturn. Too bad the projected C didn’t, but oh well. It was an honest reflection of how she was doing in a tough course, and she’s not fated to become a chemist anyway. (Apparently she takes after her mother in science classes. Unfortunately for her.)

Thank you hoosier96! Well, he finished the 9 weeks with a high D. Better than the F but it was hard to see that on his report card. He is two weeks into the new 9 weeks and he has a 96 so far. He is continuing to stay after school for tutoring (to reinforce what they are learning in class). Hope he is able to keep the grade high enough so he does not damage his GPA once the two 9 weeks are averaged together. I believe he is trying very hard this school. That is the reason that I try not to be too hard on him. I just keep encouraging him to push through. We knew going in that his junior year would be the most difficult year.

How many of your kids are prepping for the SAT? My son plans to take in in Jan.

S’16 is prepping oh so “lightly” for the SAT 90 minutes on Saturday with the tutor and then the blue book stays laying on the counter… :-< for January.
His second midterm grades are due on Tuesday. Poor guy had 5 test in 4 days last week. He is I spy mode right now…I spy my boy somewhere / in our house.
Junior year is not for the faint of Heart crowd.
@allboyz sounds like he has his act together going after school for help shows he really wants to do well…hang in there.

My DD16 is aiming for a Jan SAT, but is prepping online for the Dec ACT now. She’ll take three ACTs, but only the one SAT. So, she’ll do some SAT prep at home during the winter break and let the chips fall where they may. I will be so glad when junior year is over for her.

This is such a tough year! I’d say I’ll be glad when it’s over but then senior year starts, and I’m not sure I’m ready for so many "last time"s.
I won’t be sad to see the backside of standardized testing though.

5 day tests in 4 days? Wow…Hope he gets to completely relax/recharge over Thanksgiving break…

I will be so happy when junior year is over too. I keep trying to motivate my son. I told him that I know he has a lot on his plate this year. Then I told him to just push through right now. I told him time will go by really fast once the holiday season is over. He did not say a word. He just looked at me. It was like he was thinking, “Yeah, right…” LOL

I don’t think we will be taking the SATs at all. My D seems to be just fine with the ACT and has been diligently working harder towards raising her score. We are looking at the June ACT.
