@seal16 my D is in the same boat with missing one math question was -50 ouch! But now it’s done, over, never have to worry about the SAT again!!!

Well, it’s been a hellish few weeks that involved an impromptu trip to Istanbul to spring D13 from a government hospital(Embassy involvement required). Followed by week of skating competition with D16. Now back home, but D13 in hospital again.

But finally got the long awaited October SAT scores…2350 (800 math/verbal, 750 writing). Awesome.

Visited a few schools in the vicinity of the skate comp…Gonzaga, Whitworth Uni, and Washington State Uni.

I am not certain Teach for America requires a teacher certification. I bump into many teachers fresh out of an Ivy where they have no teaching programs either. This is just a volunteering commitment they are making so that they can go onto other jobs/graduate school.

Wow! Istanbul? Sounds like some story there! Awesome SAT scores!!!

Teach for America jobs are actually paid but you are correct that it is a special program (2 year commitment typically in inner city public schools or other underserved populations) for those who don’t necessarily have any prior training and/or experience in the education field.

Yes, I agree that Teach for America does not require an education degree for teaching. However, the university spoke so much about teaching in their opening and closing presentation that it would give you the impression that they offered education degrees which was not the case at all.

Sorry I have been gone so long, a few trips across the country, ran for school board (and won) and I am a coach has kept me busy.

@3scoutsmom, congratulations on your D’s score. My S still has 24 concepts to master. I am hoping he is ready by January.

APUSH has be giving S some trouble and his grade has dropped from an A+ to an A-. I am hoping he doesn’t go any lower.

@3scoutsmom , yes, quite the story. It’s a sensitive issue so I can only share so much publicly, but I will say to make sure your college kids doing an exchange are well aware of what their health insurance covers and that there is a solid plan for managing chronic health conditions. And congrats on your kiddo’s SAT score too!! We will both hope this bodes well for the PSAT score.

@momofzag , is your child at Gonzaga? We just toured, and it’s a neat place.

@Mysonsdad , congrats on the win! Wow, very meaningful work.

It looks like they have created a strong program that gives them the background without actually going all the way and that is what they are trying to hype? I don’t know much about Rhodes other than the fact that a well known CC oldtimer, @Curmudgeon, has written several essays about his daughter’s adventures there (she turned down Yale to go there on a full scholarship but is now finishing up medical school now at Yale). Based on all of his past stories, I have concluded that Rhodes seems to be an excellent college.

@AKfirefly nope D is not at Gonzgaga (that’s west coast, right?). You must have me confused with someone else.

@AKFirefly congratulations on the 2350. Wow that is impressive.

@Mysonsdad Yes, she had a 2150 which was about what our local test prep company tops out at and she wasn’t get past that on her own. Our goal with Prepscholar was to move from 2100+ to a 2300+ which she did with only 32 hours on Prepscholar. Specifically, we wanted a CR+M at 1500+ and overall at 2300+ which she did even with the very harsh math curve for November, missing ONE was 750 in math!

It seems we have a very strong group of kids on this 2016 forum. D crossed 2300 line as well. What a pity one math error took 50 points from the perfect score.

@momofzag , oh, the Gonzaga students call themselves “Zags”, so I thought your name meant you had a kid there :-)

Three “2350” results on the forum, wow! Did we all use Prep Scholar? Admittedly, D16 did not use it to its full potential but it was helpful, I think.

actually my D was only 2310 but I’m fine with that! There is no way she is going to take the SAT a third time. I do think it was Prepscholar that gave her the push that she needed. It’s really hard to move from 2100+ to 2300+ especially since she wanted to spend a limited amount of time on test prep. We will use the same prep plan with S18 and S20. D16 didn’t complete the ‘big picture’ CR section on Prepscholar and that was the only area she did not improve in on the SAT.

Hope all our kids do as well on the PSAT!

What is the best resource for SAT subject tests? D will take math2 and physics. Anything like PrepScholar just for subject tests?

@seal16 , my D16 did the Math2 and Physics subject tests freshman year. I don’t know of anything like PrepScholar for subject tests. She used one or two regular prep books, but I can’t recall the titles! She did well, 750 and 730.

@seal16 my D took the Math2 in10th grade. I bought her the Barron’s Math2 subject prep book but don’t think she even opened it. She got a 770, there was a very generous curve on that test.

I’m really struggling with suggesting D take another subject test, the school she wants to go to doesn’t require them and none of her back up schools do either. People keep on telling me that she might change her mind and that she should apply to more schools. I really don’t think this will be the case but I’d hate to limit her choices because of lack of subject tests. Do many schools require two subject tests? She’s taking 6 AP tests this year and just hate to add another test to the mix.

@AKFirefly @3scoutsmom D took math2 sophomore year as well. She lost one of her contact lenses during the test. Had to take the other one out… Long story. Any way it was not the score we expected. So now when we are freeeeeeeeeeeee from SAT or ACT she can use free time to study for subject tests. She is taking 6 AP classes this year as well. AP tests are in May. She will take subject tests in January and June. I pushed SAT physics to June since she will be done with AP Physics C by then. I do not know how two relates so we will see.

What do your kids have on agenda next now when they are done with testing?
