Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Same @carolinamom2boys. I am definitely a glass half empty kid of girl too.

Count D as another ā€œtoo busy to be homesickā€, and thatā€™s actually surprised me. Her life was so intertwined with people here, not just our little family, that I thought sheā€™d miss it terribly. But itā€™s my job to worry, so I get all Eeyore about it too.

I pretty much only get homesick at nights

I just caught up with a weekā€™s worth of CC16; please excuse these delayed replies.

@4kids2graduate, my under-21 kids have stayed in MA hotels by themselves several times, and my D16 did so with @carlson2ā€™s D16 just a month ago (of course, together they are 35 ;)) ). Maybe donā€™t tell the hotel that he is under 21.

@arisamp (our noble founder): loved the story about your S baking the cake for his dorm mateā€™s birthday!

D has been using Uber (in Boston in fact @fretfulmother and @Ballerina016) and feels very safe. And I have too, in fact. Uber is linked to my DHā€™s account. I think of Uber as a safety back up for both D and S. If people want to set it up for their kids as a safety precaution, I suggest having them use it at least a few times so when they really need it they will be familiar with the app.

I happen to love the posts from our self-proclaimed ā€œhalf empty glassā€ folks, which is funny because I am definitely a ā€œglass half full and could it in fact be overflowing?ā€ type. Itā€™s nice to have all types.

Hugs to all who need them and high fives to the others. I agree that the posts from this group look very different than they did a year ago.

@eh1234 why does your DD have to take so many STEM classes?

Itā€™s great to hear all these updates!!

@labegg, I just mentioned to someone today that I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Iā€™ve always been fairly optimistic, but D can be a glass is half empty girl. I think part of it is just my mama heart trying to be prepared for any situation. I need to remember that any ā€˜downā€™ days she has or ā€˜badā€™ things that happen wonā€™t be the end of the world and can teach her resilience. Parents weekend is coming up, it will be good to see her.

Wish me luck today! I start volunteering at Dā€™s former HS. Iā€™ll be working in the office on Monday mornings, as I am off on Mondays.I believe so much in the school and its mission, and it saved my daughter from years of schooling that was not a match. Giving back is the least I can do.

Good luck @sseamom ! Even though you donā€™t need luck.

I just had to come by with an update-so much happened this morning! Ran into the schoolā€™s founder and got a chance to catch her up on Dā€™s adventures, talked with the VP who reminded me that they still need emergency certificated subs and she still would like me to do it-they were down 7 teachers last week and the district is seriously short of subs. Then she introduced me to the new principal, who repeated the need for subs and offered to help me get certified (you just need a BA/BS for an emergency cert. They think that someone who knows the school well would be ideal, and if I added the nearby middle school and elementary schools to my ā€œapprovedā€ list, they think I would have work every day, if I wanted it.

They also invited D to come help out during winter break (sheā€™ll be home while the kids have 2 weeks of fall semester left) and theyā€™ll give her volunteer or internship hours. She can help in the spring too, since theyā€™ll have almost 2 months to go once she is home.

When I called D to tell her this news, she said she found out today that she has an internship at the local Urban League and will get to write lesson plans for the after school program. They can craft it as volunteer work if needed for the school requirements. And she JUST this minute texted me about her first published grade-an A in her composition class. Today has been a good day.

Thatā€™s a wonderful day! @sseamom Yay on the A! I got a 100 on my math quiz!

Congrats @sseamom and @readingclaygirl

Leasing for off campus apartments and dorms has started for my S. Such a crazy real estate market he is in. He is barely settled in and already having to look for next year.

I think weā€™re seeing D16ā€™s math LD do its work, this first semester of college. This is not going to be pretty. Poor kid.

@dyiu13 That sucks, do they have tutors available to help? How did the Monday night phone call go?

Finally got D16 to commit to coming home for Thanksgiving and booked her flight yesterday.

Iā€™m sorry to hear that @dyiu13

@dyiu13 , Iā€™m so sorry about the math struggles. Hopefully the TAs or tutors can be helpful.

I took a break from social media and such the past couple of weeks. Iā€™ll try to catch up on posts if I can.

I hope everyoneā€™s kids are happy, healthy, and enjoying their new college experiences!

We saw my daughter this past weekend, for Family Day, for the first time in a month, since we dropped her off.
She is THRIVING at Ball State, Iā€™m happy to report.

She and her roommate get along fabulously (didnā€™t meet her though, because she was away at a tennis tournament for the weekend; maybe next time) and even hang out together.

She has a boyfriend! He is also in marching band and in the trumpet section. The band has also proven to be a second family away from home, and the older students are super helpful and supportive of the incoming freshman. We met him and he seems really sweet.

She is staying on top of things academically, as well, and seems to be managing her time better.

Iā€™m keeping my fingers crossed - but visiting her this past weekend was like visiting my ā€œrealā€ daughter, the one that got buried under all the depression and anxiety these past few years. Itā€™s like sheā€™s excavating herself from all that past rubble. Iā€™m just so happy to see her this way.

Will try to catch up on all your posts. Hope all off you and your kids are doing well!

@BeeDare, itā€™s wonderful to hear that your D is doing so well!

@BeeDAre so nice to see your update! What wondeerful news about your D!

@dyiu13 so sorry that your D is struggling. I agree that tutors can be very helpful, as they work one on one with the students.
