@LKnomad My sweet girl was elected to the GW Democrats Freshman Committee but no political protesting yet. The students have been really focused on protesting to assist the dining staff employees through the dining hall transition. Many have lost their jobs after being told they would not. It’s been hectic but the protesting is for a good cause.
Sad news about Fallenchemist huh? I always appreciated his posts.
Ready for regularly scheduled programming for sure! @livinginLA I think the feelings your D14 has are very common right now
Unfortunately my DD is too young to vote, but she has a very strong opinion and is actively working with on campus organization making sure those who can will vote.
i am giving out Halloween candy while S21, dressed up as Thing One, madly dashes around our neighborhood for candy. D16, however, is ignoring my texts, which leads me to believe she is at a Halloween party. Happy Halloween all!
We had a long talk about voting during our weekly Sunday call from DD. I asked her if she’d mailed in her absentee ballot and she had. DH and and I both voted early on Saturday. I asked her how she voted on two local issues because I was curious about her opinion and since she’s OOS she’s not getting the same info as if she were home. I did tell her is was fine if she didn’t want to discuss it. She was happy to share her thoughts and we agree on one issue and but the other, had she had more information she probably would have voted the other way. But given the info she had and I agreed with her rational.
I did share who DH and I voted for in the presidential election and was pleasantly surprised that all three of us ended up voting for the same candidate but all three of us had radically different reasons for doing so.
Our S16 registered to vote in PA because it’s more of a battleground state. I talked to him a little while ago, when he was getting ready to go to his improv club meeting.
@3scoutsmom I think it’s kind of cool/interesting, that all three of you have three different viewpoints but chose the same person.
Please stay @palm715 ! I need to know how your DD fairs once the snow flies.
Welcome back @LKnomad ! I am on 2020 as well but it is too early there for a lot of conversation.
Going to go see DS on campus in 2 weeks. Hoping to have at least two meals with him around the performances we are going to campus to see.
@palm715 I hope that you are just bowing out of the banter between you and Happyface2018. Your posts are much enjoyed here. I know that there are new faces and it’s more difficult to keep up. And I know that this thread was most supportive during our 16’s admission and acceptance process. Now that “life” has returned we are bound to be more real with each other. It’s difficult to ascertain the tone behind posts that people make and there are bound to be disagreements. I think we should all not assume what anyone’s situation is.
I know I tend to ramble. This all sounds better in my head than it reads.
@palm715 if there is a Trader Joe’s near campus they normally carry a little Tofurkey kit that is microwaveable if she is so inclined. My daughter had a vegan Thanksgiving one year and that was an easy way to make her a main course. Now she is back to eating poultry so much easier for Chef Mom. I would also be inclined to agree with you on the hugging and gifts. One of my kids would think nothing of it but the other would be horrified to no end. It’s so hard to figure out boundaries with our young adults and their friends. We always try and include friends and room mates when we have visited but in a very laid back way.
Palm. You have to stay. I hope you are jesting with us bc I love your posts – your good heartedness always shines through, and I seem to recall you are hosting the next virtual BBQ :-). And, there is always the possibility of an IRL meetup, should you and I (and others in this thread) find ourselves in the northeast at the same time.
Random thoughts: am visiting D16 this Thursday for Freshman Family Weekend, and am beyond excited about that. As my kids have grown older, we’ve moved from gifts to more experiences as far as holiday gift-giving goes. S21 came home with about 5 pounds of candy and some quarters. And, apologies to any Cubs fans here, but, GO INDIANS!
@madredos Please go post your poem on the class of 2017 community thread! It’s should be an annual tradition! My D17 finished her apps last weekend so we are pretty solid for now. She did have big projects in 2 AP classes due on the 1st and 2nd which I thought was pretty poor form by those teachers. Now to work on the pile of scholarship applications… My S16 seems to have adapted well. Made the sports team he tried out for and 2 of his classes have a lot of work but aren’t difficult and the other 2 are difficult and have a lot of work.
@madredos’s wonderful poem has already hit the 2017 thread - Ain’t no grass growing on the 2017ers! Although, sadly, the timing could have been better, as many over there are very worried about tomorrow’s deadline.
What a great capture of the whole angst of it all - Thank you @madredos!
Lol. That is funny! I know I speak from the other side of the fence, but I promise everything will work out in the end. Lately I wish these kids were already in charge.
@dcplanner - Good luck on those scholarship apps. I don’t miss that stress one bit.
How are your girls doing @madredos
@readingclaygirl - They are both loving their schools. Thx so much for asking. I feel like after all of the hard work and stress of deciding, they ended up where they belong. One of them even has to share one bathroom with 7 other girls and she has never said boo about it. They love their professors and have met a lot of great kids. But I am looking forward to Thanksgiving. How are you and your sister faring being apart? Do you talk much? I am sure your parents will enjoy having both of you home soon.
@madredos - I didn’t have the opportunity to read that last year, but I wish I had! What a gem!!
@LKnomad - not sure where you’re from, but I live in Portland, so if you ever need any local info or assistance, I’d be happy to help!
@auntiek Thanks. I will actually be there over Thanksgiving. I am from Southern Cal. My son loves the weather and I can see a future where he ends up in the PNW or No Cal now that he has had a taste of it. Everyday of rain makes him happy.
