Wow. I had not checked this thread since Dec 17. S16 brought home his roommate for a couple of days before putting him on a plane to MA. They had both finished exams several days earlier than expected. S16 made Dean’s List according to his GPA. They are very slow in announcing it according to my parents group. It means we keep a tidy discount on USAA car insurance. We almost need a thread about how our children have grown this semester. I’m so impressed on how my son has taken initiative in a thousand small ways. From seeking medical care, finding a place to repair his car, finding a place to repair his bike, to selling an unused football ticket without being prompted. He has been hired for a great job next summer. He started being paid for five hours a week on Jan 1. He returns to school on January 17. Twelve more days…
That’s great @sseamom!
@sseamom: I’m just smiling at the news about your daughter. Smiling for me, smiling for you.
@OspreyCV22 : Do we have to, or should we, continue to report our child’s grade status to the insurance company for the good student discount? If so, that never occurred to me, so thanks.
Anybody else’s D.C. realizing that friends may not be around this summer? DS was excited to get his summer job close so he could live here over the summer close to, let’s be honest, his GF. He has been checking in with other friends and many have internships elsewhere (many are sophomores). It will be an odd summer for him. I remember that feeling that “home” had changed and it was not just sitting there waiting for me to come back to it when school let out for the summer. I knew it was changing but somehow it was still a surprise. I saw that same look on his face last night.
Question: Health insurance company changed 1/1/17 (AGAIN). Do I have to inform his school? I know he has local coverage while at school.
We had to continue reporting grades for our oldest (to our auto insurance company) when he was in college because he was too close to home (less than 100 miles) to qualify for “away at school” status.
@Waiting2exhale our insurance company requests a copy of older DD’s grades every year.
@Cheeringsection Our D realized at winter break that things had changed with her friends. One didn’t even come home, one worked, but different hours than D, her friends still in HS had other things going on-there was not as much visiting as she had thought would happen. Right now she has several options for summer so I’m not sure what she’ll be doing, but I think she knows it won’t be the same as when she was in HS.
As for the health insurance-I’d let them know. We had to get a waiver from D’s college to avoid the costly and less coverage offered by the school and to use our own insurance. It was based on proving what our insurance provides so if it changed, we’d probably have to get a new letter.
@Cheeringsection Yes. Friendships have totally changed and it is hard. I mean I knew it would happen but still.
@Waiting2exhale “@OspreyCV22 : Do we have to, or should we, continue to report our child’s grade status to the insurance company for the good student discount? If so, that never occurred to me, so thanks.”
We have USAA. When I put him on the policy a couple of years ago I was told we were getting about $79 a month discount for his honor student status. It was up for renewal in December and they sent me a letter asking for proof that he is still an honor student. I was chomping at the bit for proof! He has an SUV at school because Blacksburg is in the middle of nowhere. There are no good public transportation options. He joined the car pool Facebook and gets $20 per person for a ride home. He brought his roommate to Richmond so he could fly to Boston for the holidays.
Regarding auto insurance good student discounts, for our insurance they wanted was was available when they sent the renewal. So if we were OspreyCV22, up in December, they wouldn’t expect that semester’s grades yet, and would have taken the previous two marking periods in high school for a freshman. Our issue is that our school doesn’t give grades first semester, only Pass or No Record. They had never heard of that before. It might be uncommon but certainly not unheard of. I guess no one with kids at those schools is ever up for renewal before their students get official grades second semester.
Our insurance asks for grades in the summer.
Sent DS back to school today. He said it felt like it would be a long break when he arrived but it went by quickly–same as it does when he is at school–so he really is at home in both places now but misses wherever he is not.
May all have a healthy and successful 2nd semester!
Also with USAA, @OspreyCV22 : We have not received a notice to continue to supply them with grades, but maybe I will call and see. No, I’m not going to do that. My luck in life has always been to catch the person with the least amount of information and the greatest resistance to working within their own protocols. I’ll keep my eyes peeled.
Congratulations to Clemson! I heard there was a significant athletic victory for you guys, on NPR this morning, and I was psyched to recognize Clemson!!
I got in The Honor’s Program!!!
Congrats @readingclaygirl ! Continue to do great things!
Today we dropped DS off at school for the spring semester- classes start on Tuesday. I already miss him but, I know he is exactly where he needs to be. ;))
Our son goes back tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how he likes his new major; he switched from film to math after one semester. I wouldn’t be surprised if he breezes through his first two math classes.
Thank you @bookmom7 I head back tomorrow
We take S back tomorrow, too. He’s sitting on the other couch now, watching tv with us. I keep getting weepy. It will be so lonely here without him.
