Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

DS16 is recovering from wisdom teeth surgery . Happy weekend to me.

Iā€™m keeping an eye on the 2019 thread as well for S19.
D16 finished her first year at an LAC with panache, came home for four days, and left Thursday for study abroadā€“seven weeks of spanish in south America. Sheā€™s already planning a second study abroad next spring, and also plans to graduate a year early. Wow.
I have to say the LAC experience is living up to expectations. Sheā€™s working hard, learning a ton knows all her professors, goes to office hours all the time, has friends, enjoys the town, and generally making the most of the opportunity. She also has an on-campus job at the events office which is providing tons of experience and sheā€™s getting to know people in pretty much every department and office on campus.
After the summer study abroad sheā€™ll be home for the rest of the summer and has an internship set up at a nonprofit. This is our third summer with college students and the first time any of them has come home for more than a couple of weeks. We are looking forward to that!

Happy Motherā€™s Day

We brought D home from Susquehanna on Friday. Sheā€™s already counting the days, literally, until she goes back! Since she is on meds for anxiety, weā€™re thrilled she likes it so much there. Every time DH and I visit that campus, we wish we could go there, too. Sheā€™ll be working as a YMCA camp counselor this summer. It pays well and the hours are regular. She does have a little bit of a 19-year-oldā€™s attitude, but thatā€™s OK. Sheā€™ll grow out of it. Happy Motherā€™s Day to you all!

OH yes the attitude when coming home from college.

Happy Motherā€™s Day back atcha, @carolinamom2boys, and to the rest of the listā€™s moms. :x

Happy Motherā€™s Day to all ā€˜parents of the HS class of 2016ā€™ moms!

Happy Motherā€™s Day to all no matter how or where you are spending it! I get brunch some other day since I am off being sport Mom today. Would not miss it!!!

D is very bored so far this summer break (though I admit the weather doesnā€™t seem much like summer up here in New England, but thatā€™s a different topic). She found a job but it doesnā€™t start until later this week, her internship doesnā€™t start until June because they start all the interns together at the same time, and finally most of her friends are not home yet. So she has been home two weeks and she is climbing the walls. She has been spending a lot of time working on her Chinese. In addition to reviewing everything she learned last year so she doesnā€™t lose it, she has already ordered the text, workbooks and audio CDā€™s for the fall term and has started working on those. I think she is spending more time studying that S19 at the moment and he still has another month of school left.

Hey everyone, been a bit quiet of late, but guess what ā€¦ DS is home! 10 long months later! Iā€™m going to cherish every last bit of this summer with him x

Congrads @zimmum!

DS16 is also home. In his words ā€œIā€™m very happy. It was the right choice.ā€ I hope your DC can say the same!

Same here @Cheeringsection .

Welcome home to your son, @zimmum !

Thank you @RyanG1207 and @Cheeringsection - he went off ten months ago a boy and has come back a man! He is so mature and interesting and has not stopped talking since he got back. He says he loves his Uni, has met a wonderful girl who is so supportive and kind and has got good grades, what more could a mother want! Heā€™s finally healed from a yearā€™s worth of injuries and illness (damaged disk in his back, fractured foot, constant bouts of flu) and is ready to get back into training and take the next year head on. Sadly he red-shirted his first year of sport but itā€™s made him even more keen to get back and prove himself. Currently heā€™s been sleeping a lot over the last couple of days since he arrived back after 48 hours of travel across the world. Iā€™m a happy mum right now

DDā€™s grades posted. She did fine, you could sum up the academic aspect of her freshman year as fine. Not bad, not great, would love to see a bit more effort made in some areas. Socially it was a good year. Marquette is the right place for her.

Currently waiting to hear if they will accept her request for an internal transfer to the business school. She Is planning on sticking with the direct admit DPT program, just changing her undergrad major from biomedical science to business. It will likely mean full on summer classes from here on out and probably a j term or two. We shall see. She is working at the sno cone place where she has for the past 2 summers until she heads out for her study abroad in Italy at the end of July. Hard to believe this year, that we were all so anxious about is behind us!

@labegg glad to hear she is doing well. Tell me more about the major switch. What is different about career opportunities with that major and then DPT?

Hereā€™s a bit of an update on S16. Heā€™s going to get a psych evaluation as soon as we can get it scheduled. It turns out that for the last several years heā€™s been so frustrated trying to get started on writing assignments that heā€™s been hitting walls and just not doing them for years. Since he usually just didnā€™t turn them in it looked like he was slackng. Everyone involved thought that was what was happening. He convinced himself that it wuld be different in college, but it wasnā€™t and he cratered. Now that heā€™s come clean about whatā€™s really going on it should be easier to address his issues. It was a revelation to me that academic writing elicits the same reactions from him that algebra did from me. Itā€™s a matter of completey shutting down. He canā€™t avoid writing in college like I avoided algebra, so he needs to at least get the anxiety surrounding writing under control

@mstomper Ack, poor kid! He has my utmost sympathy. I think I based my entire college schedule on whether a prospective class required a paper or not. Many, many, many tears shed over struggling and struggling to get something articulate down on paper.

Itā€™s so good he is talking to you!

Thanks, @Midwest67. The weird thing is that there are types of writing where he is not only competent bit is very, very good. When strict guidelines are involved, he shuts down. Iā€™m glad the close reading, text based writing wasnā€™t in vogue when I was in school. My ā€œscan, summarize, and bsā€ technique probably would be as successful.

@mstomper What a blessing to receive more clarity regarding your DS current situation. [-O<
