We have an umberella policy with USAA and have all the kids under it too (renter’s insurance and car insurance). The way it’s structured I’m not sure how it would work with a different policy. Because USAA does not have motercycle coverage DH’s bike is insured by Gieco but we had to increase the liability for the motorcycle in order to get the umberella policy so maybe you just need to show you have the minimum liability for the umberella policy?
our umbrella policy is with the same company - all 3 are bundled (home, auto, umbrella) but we just got the new bill and it’s much higher for some unknown reason (no claims, and no new driver yet since we got it). We are close to adding driver #4 to our policies, though, so that will probably make it even higher. For State Farm, our insurance doubled when we added him at age 17, but only for the car that DS was assigned to, and they let us pick the car with the lowest insurance as his assignment. We’ll be adding DD soon after she turns 17, so I’m curious how much worse it will get!
S16 has a small scholarship that is about the cost of his car insurance. This year, we’ve let him know that we’ll continue to pay his insurance through college if he keeps his grades up high enough to keep his scholarship. Hopefully, this will be another incentive to study!
DD wandered into my bedroom this morning to tell me she is planning to pack up today. We leave in one week to take her back. She has to finish up a paper that is due Saturday discussing her summer study abroad trip, so procrastination at least is resulting in packing!
Confirmed that umbrella policies usually are with the same company as the rest and decided to just make the best of it. Then, found out there was a misunderstanding and the policy is 15% Less than was quoted. Got it all moved over today.
Thanks! I went ahead and swtiched to Geico. They were super helpful in making sure my daughter in a different state had a “companion” policy to ours with the needed insurance where she attends college. Rates actually went down vs if she were in our home state, yet her coverage is actually a little better. And my overall rates are saving me over $260 per month. So far Geico has been very helpful with all of my questions and concerns. I am now kicking myself for not switching sooner as we paid (A LOT) for my daughters car to just sit at our house last year while she was at college. Liberty mutual doesn’t have an option to remove students if over 100 miles without a car (Geico does).
I appreciate all of the info above.
I am also looking at umbrella policies and was told it can be with a different company. May be a better deal to bundle it though.
Oh what a difference a year makes! DS is going through dorm mountain and deciding what he needs and what can stay until at least Thanksgiving AND I am not really involved. I answer questions but he is doing the work. I guess knowing he survived with whatever he had last year has convinced me I need not worry about his dorm stuff. I will miss him but will not worry nearly like I did last fall.
Opps
S is doing the same thing. He said he wants to take almost nothing. i predict extra room in the car this year. lol.
I wish I could say the same! When we moved S out a few months ago, he said he’d bring back less. I guess it was only said in the heat of the moment because it looks like we have even more. I had already happily repurposed the knock off Raskog cart in my kitchen, but now he wants it back! Darn
Okay so DS did the work but we already have something to send that he forgot and is too expensive to simply buy locally. LOL!!
S divided dorm mountain yesterday, almost down the middle. I’m resisting the urge to pull out last year’s packing lis but I expect his method will result in some needed but forgotten items having to be sent later. It’s interesting to see the items he’s leaving behind.
D headed out this morning. Miss her already even though she was so busy I hardly saw her all summer.
We’re having an inverted experience. Son stayed on campus for a summer research gig (he also added one summer class just because). Research and summer class completed today! So, he will move out of his dorm this weekend, then come home for a month before starting the fall term. Looking forward to his return.
I had a small panic attack earlier while trying to find S’s school bedding. I remember throwing the sheets and mattress pad in a black garbage bag and was beginning to think I’d thrown it out after he came home. Luckily I had already washed them and packed them and forgot. It’s an eerily quiet day around here. S is being extra nice today, I suppose because he knows how hard tomorrow will be.
I was hoping that saying goodbye would be easier this year. It wasn’t .
Hang in the @carolinamom2boys ! Focus on his future. It sounds like CofC is a great place for him. AND allow yourself some comfort: wine, chocolate, a long walk, movie with a friend, all the above?
DD has been dropped off for round 2 I agree with @carolinamom2boys …it was harder this for me this year than last.
Dropped off S yesterday. I did a good job of not bursting into sobbing tears until 5 minutes after the goodbye hugs, kisses, and i love yous, in the car driving home. It will always be hard because I love being around him. Back home, I have S1 for another month before he leaves for grad school, so plenty of “mothering” to keep me busy.
Dreading our dropoff tomorrow, too. D18 is sad because it’s her birthday and she has work, so she won’t get to help us take him back to school. It was nice just having him around over the summer, even if he was working and not home much. Guess I’ll have to figure out a time for our first trip out to visit him! We’ll get through this, right? We did it last year :)…
Dropped off S on Saturday, but we have to make the drive to and from (6 hours each way) there again this weekend to attend his White Coat Ceremony. He moved in early to volunteer for move in. We didn’t know about the ceremony until a few weeks ago - otherwise, he would have moved in this Thursday. Knowing that we’d be back in a week made drop off easier.
