Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@Cheeringsection I have a DS19. It’s going to be a busy year.

^^Me too! D14, D16, S19, D20 and I’m finishing up my bachelors degree this Fall FINALLY! It’s fun seeing some of you folks on the other Parents of…

Back to CofC this morning . It’s surprisingly emotional this time. I’m sure having a DS19 is weighing heavy.

Hugs to you @carolinamom2boys ! Did you get to help with the move in at least? Mine packed his car and left for campus before I was home from work. Not even a hug!

On our way now @Cheeringsection

I haven’t been on this thread for a long time! I also have a S19 and have been focusing on his (much different) college search.

I also can’t believe D16 is a junior. Due to a major change and being in a B.S. program with a lot of required courses in a very specific sequence, she is realizing she will likely need to take one extra semester to graduate. (There are six remaining “Fall only” courses after this semester and one of those is a pre-requisite for another). This should also give her a little extra breathing room to complete her minor. She was only home for two weeks this summer and I miss her!

My S was planning to move back to campus on Monday, to an apartment he will share with 3 friends. I called the management company to check on a payment due before move-in and found out nobody can move in until everybody pays up. And nobody has paid up yet! I’m glad we didn’t drive all the way there to find out that tidbit of important news. Hopefully the friends want to move in early next week, too. But if not, S’s consequence for not remembering and following through on this will be spending more time with me! HAHAHAHA!!!

Hi, everyone! Haven’t been over here in so long, but reading through at least the most recent few pages of threads to catch up.

D is in Buenos Aires, Argentina rn - left in mid-July - and will be there all year for study abroad. I can’t believe it. She had kind of a stressful journey over there by herself, but handled it well. She’s still on Lexapro for anxiety, and she’s found a doctor there who can refill her prescription, which is very good. She says she’d eventually like to wean herself off, but now of course, is not the time…
I plan to visit her in November and spend Christmas with her before flying back home.

I hope you and yours are all doing well!

@BeeDAre Glad to hear your daughter is succeeding!

I’ve been gone since early 2018. At.that point our S16, who had flunked out freshman year, and said he was going.to work and take a couple of classes at the local CC. He never took any classes,.and the work has been sporadic. He’s said he wants to move out, but has done nothing to make it happen. I said, “you know, the best way to move out is.to go back to school.”. I suggested McDaniel College, a CTCL near Baltimore that really wanted his. younger brother (who unexpectedly got into a program at Ithaca college, where we will drop him off Saturday). He’s actually pretty enthusiastic about it. The question is.the degree to which they will overlook his freshman year fiasco. I think he should be up front about what a disaster his freshman year at Temple was. However, there was an an undiagnosed disability (we had him tested). McDaniel is a school that provides extensive support. Yes, his freshman year was a disaster. However, we’re talking about a NMSF with an SAT score probably in their top 1 percent. He graduated from a prestigous math/science magnet program. He took math classes in HS that many math majors don’t take until college. He neglected to take an alcohol education module before he started at Temple, which means they won’t release his transcript. That means he wouldn’t get credit for the 3 classes he passed. He needs to be up front with McDaniel about the situation. He has 28 AP credits so he’s close.to.Sophomore status. My hope is that he will still be eligible for the Educator’s Legacy scholarship, which provides 25K per year. He’ll have to make his case that he’s worth the risk. It:s hard to overlook a NMSF with a 1460 SAT, but there’s also the failure to launch. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Good luck to your son @mstomper

@mstomper

How is your S16 doing emotionally? Has he been willing or able to see a therapist or life coach?

Do your boys get along? Is seeing his younger brother go to off to college motivating or discouraging?

I’m glad you updated! Wishing you and your family well.

Good to hear from you @mstomper ! I hope it all works out.

@mstomper good luck! Keep us posted! To give you some encouragement my husband flunked out of RIT back in the day because he was really not ready to deal with college and was in comp science which ended up being too hard for him. Came home and went on academic probation at Rutgers and Majored in music which he loved. Got straight A’s. And fast forward his whole career ended up being in radio and video and now works for a well-known software company for 15 years.

Also my best friend‘s son in 2014 had a full ride scholarship for music and came home freshman year unable to even talk…he had a total meltdown. Got the help he needed. He took two or three years off and worked in various places Like a warehouse and a food store. He moved around a bit while working through his stress. and then went back to community college and soon transferring to a 4 college for either accounting or math. He said he was so thankful his parents allowed him to work through life that time. Lots to the story but I talk too much ha ha.

Can’t wait to see the success in your family!

He has been seeing both a therapist and psychiatrist, and is taking anti-anxiety meds. It may be my imagination, but he seems to have perked up since I suggested he check in returning to school. He hasn’t visited or applied yet, but he’s been doing research on McDaniel. I think he’s seeing that a small school with lots of available support is a better fit than one with 35K students.

He’s always gotten along with his brother. Here’s something that foreshadowed his problems with academic writing. He had a school English teacher who he didn’t like. He’d never mentioned not liking a teacher before. That’s when he started not turning in assignments. Two years later, younger brother had the same teacher. He did like her, and she even nominated him as student of the month. S18 is about to enter a writing for tv and film program. When younger brother was in grave danger of failing Calculus senior year, guess who came to the rescue? I think that he’ll need support with writing when he’s back in school, but he’ll probably also help fellow students.who need that one math class and are struggling. A few years ago I wouldn’t have expected a visit to the disabilities office to be part of the process, but here we are. It will be good to have the report in hand so.that he can get the support he needs.

@mstomper I hope things continue to get better for your son.

We’ve had a crazy couple weeks here. D came home from China and was home for only 5 days before we had to take her back to school. She started feeling sick as we were packing up the car with a fever and feeling really tired. We dropped her in Pittsburgh on Wednesday hoping it was just a bad cold. Today she calls and it turns out she has mono. Ugh. It’s going to be a rough start to the new school year.

Oh no @me29034

Looking forward to this weekend when S will be returning home for 3 weeks before the fall quarter starts. He had a great internship over the summer and will continue working at the startup on a part time basis through the school year. The grill is ready!

So not ready for this. CofC just announced graduation date for the class of 2020!

I have graduation on my calendar already also. Really hoping that DD20 and DS16 graduate on different weekends! Looks good for now but “subject to change”.
