Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@cakeisgreat: “Speaking of updates, D16 is going to Paris this summer to study mold and fermentation with “wines and cheeses” as a food science major. Really exciting but very bittersweet now with what is currently happening.”

That sounds so great! Going to PM you.

@carolinamom2boys: Soo happy for your son. So happy.

Thanks @Waiting2exhale

In that case I study mold and fermentation almost nightly :slight_smile:

@Rivet2000 :smiley: Me too!

My 2016 DD comes home on May 11. She is scheduled for knee surgery on May 16. She is bummed that she had to come home this summer, as she has been living pretty much full-time at school since her sophomore year. No exciting internships/jobs/study abroad for her this summer. She will be taking that dreaded college course - OChem- at our local CC while she is recovering. Not gonna lie, I am sort of happy to have her home one last summer; time sure flies! She will officially be a senior in the fall, but she had to tack on an extra semester for student teaching, when she switched her major from DPT to Secondary Education: Broad Field Science, so we aren’t looking at graduation until December of 2020.

My dd16 is making my head spin! She’s finishing up projects this week and moving out of her apartment and then driving to CO for an amazing internship. She’s decided to graduate a semester early (with honors, a BS in Meteorology and minors in Math and Comp Sci). She’ll graduate December 15th and gets married on January 1 and starts grad school mid January. I hope to be able to travel to Oklahoma to help her with some wedding planning in August. Her wedding will be in OKC and she’s staying at OU for grad school. I wish she’d slow down and wait a bit but this is the path she’s determined to take.

Wow- I love all the updates- so much is happening with our HS class or 2016!

DS will only be home for a few weeks this summer. They actually end fairly late & then he is off to Chicago for summer research. Can’t believe we are getting ready for a final year of undergrad- will be interesting to see where he ends up for grad school. (get to do the whole application & waiting game again- although this time it will be from afar for me)

Hope everyone has a great summer- with or without your DS/D!

It’s nice to hear how all these kids are doing, including the ones who have struggled a bit and are beginning to find their way again.

My head is spinning too. D16 is graduating next week from her LAC. She’s been the one to race through everything, and college has been no exception. In three years she has completed a major, almost a math double major (officially a minor) studied abroad twice, and done an REU, learned to code. She called yesterday and said, “I’m done with college!” She’s starting a dream job two year economic research assistant position and then plans on grad school.

Congrats to all! DS16 is graduating next month and is engaged! :slight_smile: We really like her. DS will continue at graduate school in the fall.

Wow. Kids are getting engaged! I can’t imagine that. D is not ready at all for anything like that. She’s had plenty of boyfriends but they never seem to last very long. It seems as soon as I meet one, he’s gone and then I start hearing about another name. Well, she’s just 20 so I guess that’s OK.

D is also not going to be home this summer. She’s here now for a couple weeks as school has ended but will be leaving soon for her internship. She was in China last summer, and now is going to be gone again this summer. I don’t think she will really live with us again.

Big updates!

I’m relieved our kid decided to stay the 4th year & not graduate early.

I think she will benefit from an easy year. She is going to study abroad one semester & work on grad school applications.

I met her BF and got a great first impression.

I’m going to visit her this summer since she rarely comes home now!

@Midwest67 -agreed. DS has it all planned out to only take 6 hours the last semester- lol.
I also think he may be a happy camper to stay in school forever…

To all : Whew!

@fretfulmother: Congratulations, my dear fret. Congratulations to you and yours.

@Waiting2exhale thank you!!! :slight_smile:

Oh wow, @fretfulmother , Congrats to your son and future DIL. You must be beyond excited!

Thank you @BeeDAre !!! :slight_smile: :slight_smile:

I wedding plans here. DD16 is about to start a summer internship and not dating anyone. We had her home for a week for her sister’s graduation and maybe for a few days right before school starts again. Congratulations to all of the new graduates, engaged, and those just winging it!

After a year and a half away from college, S did manage to pass all his classes at McDaniel. He’s probably not going back, though. He found the town too isolated and quite depressing. Since he doesn’t like college to begin with, that’s too much. Fortunately, he plans to finish his Associate’s at our local community college and possibly move on to an Arts Integration program at University Baltimore. One step at a time, though. At least this time he’s planning on staying in school. He doesn’t like it, but realizes that it’s pretty much a necessity for someone with his career interests and skill set. At least one parent totally gets how excruciating that can be (my wife was fortunate to enjoy school at every level).

@mstomper

Would he ever consider one of the trades?

Some time spent out west in a NOLS course?

So glad he has your support! And I wish there were more good clear alternatives to college.
