@Midwest67, he really doesn’t have the interest or aptitude for the trades. He has a passion for movies, and wants to work in the exhibition/distribution side of the business. His math skills are probably top one percent, but the interest just isn’t there.
I miss having S home this summer. It’s so bittersweet. He has an internship in his college town, which is good for him. We had him for a week and will get another week hopefully at the end of summer. I’ve been throwing myself into yard work and have adopted five squirrels, one rabbit and 27 birds for the summer, so I’m getting less lonely!
I don’t think S has dated at all in college so it amazes me that some have successfully navigated school and relationships.
S is home for a few days before returning to campus and starting his summer internship. Great that he will be able to stay in the dorms - saves some money vs a shared apartment. Grades are also in - best quarter he’s had so far! All his general education classes are complete, so all of his senior year classes will be ones he’s 120% excited about.
Congratulations @fretfulmother Is he making Susan Patton’s dream come true.
@texaspg - LOL! I thought of that too. And thank you!

Hope that all of the HS Class of 2016 are having a great summer!
D16’s summer has gone well so far. She goes to her study abroad in Costa Rica in 2 weeks. I’m glad she’s getting some cultural immersion.
She told me yesterday she’s going to cry when we drop off her “little” sister at West Point tomorrow. The girls are so close. D19 won’t be able to reach out to her “big” sister for advice or talk at all for the next 6 weeks. ?
So I’ve paid first semester senior year tuition, room and board and now DS’s college fund looks really small compared to where it started. Wow! What a lot of money to send out in 3.5 years when it took 21 years to put it away. Feeling proud, a little surreal, excited, relieved, amazed, lucky, old, blessed, tired and energized all at once. Anybody else having oddly mixed feelings about reaching this point in your DC’s college journey?
@psychmomma Define “successfully”. One broke it off with his high school girlfriend a couple of months ago, the other is still happily ace/aro. I have no idea what the older kids are up to, though I think Eldest may be in a committed relationship at this point.
@Rivet2000 D16 isn’t going to graduate “on time”; we’re back in the middle of dorm decorations and contemplating bed bug-proof mattress covers for her transfer from the CC to uni. S16 could have graduated in May, still could graduate in December, may graduate on time in May 20…or, if he gets the internship he wants, will actually graduate in December 20. So who knows, at this point? I can confidently say though that the one who graduated high school a buncha years ago will be getting her PhD in December, so there’s definitely at least one uni
graduation soon!
Headed to campus, well off campus apartment, tomorrow! Here we go for the forth round. Cannot wait to hear more about DS20’s summer internship on the long drive.
S leaves on Sunday. I can’t believe it’s the last year for our youngest. His summer internship was “fine”. Rather repetitive and boring, but that tells him something about the type of job he will look for next. We were lucky to have a couple weeks with him here between the internship and school.
I was out shopping and saw the swarms of parents and kids in the back-to-school section and thought wow!! A pack of mechanical pencils is all that stands between me being one of those parents and a beyond-school-supplies parent.
I have done nothing yet to plan for graduation and moving D out of her apartment next May. I’d better hop to it!
I’m looking forward to seeing where she ends up next year for grad school – assuming that is still in the cards and works out how she wants.
Past week has been great so far.
Got D16 back from her study abroad to Costa Rica and we’re going to see D19 on Saturday. We haven’t seen her since we dropped her off at West Point 1 July.
D16 will be starting class in 10 days so she’s excited.
For D19, we partnered up with her best friend’s parents for a grad party. We may try to partner up for D16’s college grad party with a couple of her HS friends.
D16 wrapped up her internship last week and came home for less than 24 hours yesterday. She is now heading off to the beach with a friend. Back on Sunday, celebrate 21 st birthday Monday and then back for last two semesters on Friday. We have financial aide woes so still trying to figure that out, but she will finish if it’s the death of me.
Yikes, haven’t logged on in awhile, and wow the layout change is gonna take some getting used too! DD16 is gearing up to start classes next Monday. She is currently looking forward to a second run at being a freshman orientation leader, was psyched because being a returning leader meant she garnered the “good” assignments. Found out today she was assigned to a favorite mentor teacher for a student teaching course this fall. Looking forward to getting this fall semester over, as she wraps up the remains science courses necessary for her major and is hoping to get the Praxis exam out of the way. Hard to believe we have arrived at senior year again!
Wife just made hotel reservations for commencement next year. Evidently, hotels fill fast. S is currently considering hanging around to finish up a quick masters, but says he’ll walk with his undergrad class (and his masters class in an additional year). Two celebrations better than one!
The last ever college move-in day is over! It’s hard to believe we’ve done this 12 times in the past 10 years. Most of the years required our minivan. This third kid, he is ready to live the simple life. My sedan trunk wasn’t even full this trip! It’s funny to contrast my feelings from the first drop to the last one. I’m so much better at it now than in the beginning!!
Hope everyone’s kid has a successful year, wherever they are in the process!
Today is the last day of summer internship for our S! He’ll fly out tonight for a week home. Whoooo!!
DD applied for spring graduation, we have booked a hotel. She will still have student teaching to do next fall, but it looks like this whole graduation thing is happening. Visited for parents weekend (first one we have ever gone too!) It was nice to see her in her habitat. Holding our breath as she finishes up this semester and the last of the “hard” classes.
