Hi all…just popping in for a hello. Nothing going on with the 16er, but preparing for launch with older one.

Anyone else think it’s funny that the parent of '17 thread only has about 30 fewer postings than our thread and our kids are a year done with HS already?! Maybe the 2016ers are finally that lucky class that everyone says is part of the HS population fall-off?

Well, my daughter wants to go to Europe with her school during the year. I want her to go, and I will most likely let her go, but I am so nervous. She’s been away before, and they have all been great experiences, but she’s never gone this far away without us. I’m just so worried.

sahp2kids- I did notice the difference between our thread and 2017s thread. Even funnier, after reading your post I looked at 2015 and noticed they have almost 4,000 more than us.

We are a quiet group huh? Perhaps things will pick up as the sophomore year starts.

S has one week to go before heading back to school. We still need to order books and some other stuff for him. He’s way more interested in spending time with his friends (virtual or otherwise!). We did have a very good family weekend this weekend - went out to Maine and just relaxed all day Sunday. Was a gorgeous day, weather wise and just fabulous to be outside.

We’re back from our Northeast trips – S16 saw both Dartmouth and Colby while we were there. They are both lovely campuses. At this point, he really has no idea what he wants, but we just wanted to take advantage of being in the area. I’ve asked him to think about rural vs suburban vs urban, number of students, focus on sports, research university and that kind of thing. He’s nowhere near making a list although he says he doesn’t care about sports and wants to be at a school that gives undergraduates research opportunities.

I have a question: How do you explain Greek life to your kids? We (parents) went to a school that didn’t allow Greek, so I don’t know how to explain it. I think that can be a defining part of some colleges.

Good luck to all those launching kids in the upcoming weeks. Wonder if any one will have any stories to post in the “Parent Faux Pas at Move-in” thread.

arisamp- Glad you had a great outing with your family. Hope the rest of the week continues to be just as enjoyable.

piesquared- Greek life can be overwhelming at some schools. It might be best to do some research with your S on the topic. There are many facets to greek life and there are a lot of differing opinions on the topic.

We moved this summer and S will be attending a new high school this fall, starting this next Monday. We got him signed up for classes this past Monday afternoon. He didn’t get all of his first choices, but he did get mostly 1st choices and everything else was 2nd choice in classes, and he will be able to pick up what he didn’t get next year. He seems happy.

bajamm - good luck to your S in his new school.

piesquared - not sure where you are looking for schools - but both U Rochester and Case Western are very good universities with research opportunities. D was offered a research grant at U Rochester, but she chose to go to Case. She has been working with one of the profs there and this summer was able to work in his lab, doing research. Although the prof wasn’t able to pay her, she wrote up a proposal and had Case support her summer research!

Greek life - oh boy! That was a whole other can of worms - D was convinced she didn’t want to join - but then she did want to join. She did go through rush but was not offered a bid (later found out that there was some mixup in her app) - but the whole process was very very stressful - both for her and for me She hasn’t mentioned it again and I am so glad!

I’d like to join in. Preparing college apps with D1’14 and planning college trips for next June for D2’16…yes, I am a ridiculous planner. But fortunately I am generally okay with changes in plans. I just need a plan. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree…D2’16 wants to go into food science, so we know which colleges we need to look at. She could change her major, of course, but hasn’t since 7th grade. Will be interesting!

we’re not limited geographically, although I’m not sure bitterly cold would be well-received. Several lottery-type schools will be on the list. Having a harder time with the next tier down, other than our flagship which is no guarantee of admission. We’ll also have to see how the next few years go, and if his interests mutate or evolve. He’s a math-olympiad qualifier, so that helps (although nothing’s a guarantee) and a strong test taker. His scores this year were over the NM cut-off for the last few years, which may expand his options.

This week is all about finishing the summer work.

Checking in on the 16ers List! Glad to hear all the reports. We are launching S13 (first one to go) tomorrow. Lots of conflicting emotions!

We drove through Portland, Oregon, a few weeks ago and stopped by Reed to take a quick look. It was a spectacular day–sunny and pleasant. We loved the campus–it’s like that all the time in Oregon, right?

Came back from vacation and registered D16 (and the other two). Lots of work–and fun–ahead.

Welcome, Yesway! Arisamp and pie, thanks for the update. Bajamm, good luck with the new school

sahp2kids and semiLucky, regarding our lower posting count…maybe the 16ers will be the mellow class? Or maybe we need to start feeling competitive and get our numbers up? ;)

Yesway777, my 2014 daughter is also interested in food science. Would you mind mentioning some of the colleges you are planning to look at? We are in CA, so are focused on Cal Poly SLO and Davis, but I think she needs a wider net. Thank you for any other suggestions!

The colleges we will be visiting are Cornell, Purdue, U Maryland College Park, U Maine, U Delaware, Rutgers U, U Mass Amherst, Michigan State U and Virginia Tech. U Florida has a great program too, but she wanted cooler weather, so we are sticking to these. I think all go to the PhD level if interested.

We visited UDel last year for D’14 for other programs, and D’16 looked into Food Science…wonderful!

An excellent resource is visiting IFT dot org if you haven’t heard about it already - they list approved colleges and you can even apply for scholarships.

My friend has been a food scientist for 20+ years at Kraft foods. They recruit from the above colleges (and probably more but those were the interesting ones). LMK if you want me to ask her any questions :).

Please let me know how your daughter does and where she goes if she sticks with food science! I am sure I will be able to glean from your experiences!!!

Thank you so much for this information, and we will look into the IFT web site. This is a more recent focus for her, although she has always had a passion for cooking and the science aspects of it, so we will have to see where she ends up!

Taking D’13 to school in 2 weeks then coming home and getting the 2 younger ones off to their first day of school a few days later. S’16 got his schedule in the mail yesterday. Looks good- taking AP Geo and AP Computer Science this year. S’16 worked (volunteered) most of the summer at scout camp. He finished this past Wednesday only to go camping at the same camp this weekend.

School starts 8/26 but much “summer reading and research” to be completed before then! S16 is deep into soccer already anyway. Taking AP Euro and AP computer science + rest honors and latin 3. Should be a heavier course load than last year. I think he is ready for it but not sure how this all fits in to getting the temps as well. Lots of peers already with full license.

8/26 for us too. S taking WHAP, Calc B/C, Span 3, Chem (Pre-AP), Art, English 2. He’s currently signed up for Ancient Civ as an elective, but is considering switching to Computer Science. His interest in that area is increasing.

I love hearing about different school’s courses. Ours won’t let you take CompSci until Junior year, but S has had more math than most. He’d love to jump into AP CompSci but I think the collective freak-out might be too much.
